Here is an interesting thought!! oh yes I do have a few tongue.gif 1977 and its the first mainland GP at Silverstone, and Barry Sheene is the new 500cc World Champ for the 2nd year, in 1976 he sewed it up with two or three 500GP races left to go, and because of the paltry payments to race in GP's Barry never raced in the last couple of GP's, the same thing happened in 1977, Barry did not need to ride in the British GP, he had already won the Championship!!(am I repeating myself!!? eek.gif ) I wonder how much he was paid to race that GP? Do you think he was and who paid him?? ACU, John Player??

They have the fast filler tanks fitted, so I would say they were the Endurance bikes, not F1 bikes?

Nah, I doubt it. But the dragon on Griff's lid, together with the Jenkins name, always puzzled me. I'd be interested to know if Griff had a Welsh connection, as I'd always thought he was a Londoner.

Yes Barry , he ( Griff ) was allways --as far as I confused.gif can remember was introduced as Welsh !! but a useful rider none the less wave.gif

I’m sure he was paid, but at the same time he would have wanted a home win and so he would’ve wanted to ride. As you know, he never did win the British GP. The closest he came was in 1979, wasn’t it?

eek.gif Well, I never. That´s something that never crossed my mind. Only now that you mentioned it. That must have been a hard one for Bazza to swallow.
It´s all relative though, isn´t it? Who of us wouldn´t have loved just one GP win, or in most cases, just to have competed in a GP. wave.gif

This is not a criticism, far be it...but there were some places that suited BS to race that were good earners.
All those outings at Scarboro' and IYRC the year JPS sponsored all the major nationals at Donington, you'll know the number I'm sure Mr SuperStat clap.gif
I remember one race where the bikes were just taken up in the back of a pick up. (which might have been the year before) Anyway the JPS sponsorship tied in with that visible on Barrys' bikes & dutifully he showed up at each Donington race. It was a part of the deal.

Griff was from Pimlico, London, but must have had Welsh ancestry - as many of us do. His good mate, Joe Dunphy, was also from the same area. Someone who was close to them in their heyday as it where, told me that Dunphy worked in the building industry after operating his brke linning business but has long since retired. I don't know though what became of Griff.

As I've no work to do at the moment: slightly bizzarely, I can remmember that Griff married a Ceri Dundas-Slater, herself a racer of a Itom 50. Her name too sounds a bit Welsh ?

Talking of Mang, I must say I was sorry he never had a decent shot at the 500 title. His one effort (1983?) was nipped in the bud before it even started when he broke his leg in a sking accident, just before the season began. He never seemed to recover from that and moved back to the 250´s the following year. Also, I think the machine he rode that year, although painted in HB colours, was just a standard RG. Maybe someone else on here knows more about it?
Great rider though IMO.

I think he had an ordinary production RG - a true works bike looked different (see the links to pics from 1983 on the 'Highsider' site)

Mang

Uncini

Mamola

But he had a try at the 500cc class before - in 1977 he started in the 125cc and 500cc class (pics anybody ?) !

I seem to recall a lot of complaints in the German press, as JLT was given more than a little help in that last race by his French compatriots. lol.gif
GD66
Yeah, but that's fair enough in a way. Remember all the assistance Loris Capirossi had from his Italian buddies at Phillip Island in 1990 on the 125s... in the end, if it's your compatriot....
