Good guess Rhodes, but no, it is 1977 though.

The book would be of more interest for the Australasian contingent, it was The History of the Castrol Six Hour race, which during the 70/80s probably our most important race. Written by Jim Scaysbrook

It's a Shoei in a Wayne Gardner period pattern, but it's also in Moriwaki colours, and not long after WG's Moriwaki ride, so it could be nothing more sinister than a helmet borrowed from a buddy....... and a Castrol Six Hour team mate, at that..... how's the book look, Jeff ?

It's Pacey; recognise the leathers and helmet. He stayed with us during 1983.

But here's one for Stu to confirm. I understand John was in line for the Suzuki ride which went instead to Paul Lewis at the end of that year. When Suzuki came calling, Pacey had left the previous week and was already back in Australia.

As to Jim Scaysbrook's Castrol Six Hour book, well, there has been a wonderful exchange of emails going on Down Under following the launch.

As ex REVS editor Mike Esdaile said: 'I reckon this will be a very well thumbed volume - by all the guilty parties. What was it Peter Lane said before the 1979 race. . . "The Six-Hour is a great battle of wits, and the scrutineers get better every year." I can see a sequel . . . "Bikes that Won, but were excluded".'

'Have memories of . . . the Ducati SD900 that qualified outside the top 15 in 1979, but in the race, with Stu Avant at the helm, was seen pulling out and passing Ken Blake on the Honda CB900F prepared by Tony Hatton, up Bitupave Hill... I seem to recall Scaysbrook crashing out on the Ducati he shared with Hailwood in 1978, through touching down the front cylinder exhaust header, while Warrian's Ducati had nary a scar on the front pipe...'

And from another: 'There was never any cheating at the 6 Hour...Ask the BMW riders...they accidentlly fitted front fork springs 3 feet too long...a natural mistake...considering most of their mechanics were uni students that were stoned/were smashed at the time...then there is the off set bores of the Kwaka 900s.. they said they came from Kawasaki like that...'

Rosko Hannan perhaps summed that era of Australian production racing best: 'Jim called me for some input in the book so I lied to keep up the tradition.'

Not the same model of Shoei helmet. I'm pretty sure the Pace/Gardner one from 83 was a stock design, in different colours.

Afternoon Nigel, wave.gif yes a few scaffold boards and poles!! its better now and I have been on the inside a few times in the last year or two, the stand has gone and the ground slightly raised and leveled off.
Also you had to pay to use it in those days I recall, 50p a Kings Ransom to me at the time!!
This pic is in practice so is a bit quieter than it was later?.

Morning Graham, its 10 PM here, I didn't realise any snappers actually used it! All of the great Druids pics, and there are a lot around, are taken from the ouside (IMHO), I can't think of any from the inside.

Going back to an earlier thread, with reference to the book about the Castrol 6 hour races, I have just got a new book on the history of Pukekohe, which might be of interest to Stu, Jeff and others. Great reading, one of the things that I didn't realise was that Cal Rayborn was killed there.

Cal Rayborn, yes in practice I think? either on the TR500 or poss the new RG500 whatever it was called in 1974?

Still can remember seeing him for the first time at Brands in 1972 on the dirt track iron barelled engined Harley, only Ray Pickrell could live with him, and Rayborn had never seen any of the tracks before!! what a rider!!
