Guys, the previous thread had become too large - more like enormous, actually - to cope with in a technical sense, so we can continue here.

The original thread will remain accessible for reference and the like, so don't panic that it's gone for ever; that's not the case. smile.gif

Oh, and those blokes who upset everyone recently have both been banned. up.gif

Have fun fellas biggrin.gif

(PS - sorry renzo; I saw what you'd done but pressed the wrong button... blush.gif )

Thanks Stu up.gif I'd like to think 378 pages of great stories, reminiscences, WWW & stunning photos is something of a record for a forum clap.gif

Hi,

Think I will be the first to post a WWW on part 2 of this interesting forum. It’s a tricky one, properly only the rider with # 1 will be recognized, as he later became a World Champion!
Don’t bother with # 29 it’s me lol.gif blush.gif

Have a nice weekend,
Leif wave.gif

PS! Hope this thread will last as long as the first one, for me this is a place to jog my memory of what happened years ago, and learn things I did not know before.

Hi Mo,

Yes it’s Salzburg Ring, my wife found those pictures in a box, can’t find the program from that meeting, but here is another picture and a clue, # 3 is from Austria and still involved in GP racing..

Cheers,
Leif

That's the brilliant engineer Harold Bartol. I had a chance to know him a little during the eighties and aside from his deep technical understanding he was also quite a nice guy as I remember. Big Cheese at KTM now.

Meanwhile...........................

We talked some pages ago about why Mamola was second in the WC many times but never champ. In 1979 he took over Baldwin's 500 ride on the Zago RG after doing some 250 GPs on a Bimota Yam, and got the 1980 works Suzuki ride on the basis of very few GPs, and actually didn't think he had the speed to beat Roberts until he did so (having the improved Full-Floater XR helped) by which time he was too far back on points.

1981 should have been his year, but everybody except 'Lucky' had bad luck or unreliability. In 1982 he was on the wrong tyres; the 1983 flexi-flyer XR45 was well past its sell-by date; Honda thought Spencer could win in 1984 on his own until too late and too many injuries, and Mamola and the other Honda boys were always second-class citizens as far as getting the good bikes; same in 1985 only more so.

The question I wonder about is why he didn't do better with Kenny's team; did they not get the same bits as Ago's?

And I think someone asked a while back about the last RGs to race in 500 GPs? WWW are these guys, on IIRC two of the last three RGs seen in 500 GPs?

Paul M
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Claude Albert and Andy Leuthe ? 1989 ?

The last to take the start with a RG was, i think, Andy Leuthe in 1991...this year the Chilian V. Cascino was DNQ at the Tchech GP...1989 was the real last season with many RG entrants

Hi Mike,

Yes I do, these things are just irreplaceable so I almost never do it. Distilled water with plenty of inhibitor is probably OK but I just worry about them. Tell the owner and put a re-useable label on it to inform them of no water and it's usually OK. Most people get used to my funny ways and remember, after a couple of times, that there is no water so it's not that bad.

#22 isn't Chas Mortimer, whose helmet was always an orangy red & white. Made me think of Uncini, but doubt it is...wasn't he a Harley rider about this time?

I guess Paul, it stops them being tempted to fire it up just to impress someone unnecessarily! Moreover it cements the owners connection with yourself. I can imagine them ringing up for your approval or instructions ;)

Is that the 1984 Honda RS850 (IIRC)?
Gorgeous sounding thing if it is.

And is #22 Tom Herron or Clive Horton?
And am I allowed 2 guesses? (and they are that, albeit slightly educated ones...)

My guess on the where is the garage in Douglas that Honda used at the IOM TT.

How about this for another piece of machining art? Totally over the top to adjust pedal height, but you do because you can. Bolt has 8mm head. Rear of footplates are machined out to save weight, because you can.

You're right, Haynes don't do one, must get on to them.

Well, most of the time I just go on the torques and tolerances used on other Japanese road and race bikes, but mainly following the torques and settings of the RG500/RGV500/GS/GSX/GSX-R's. Standard Japanese sizes, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm bolts/nuts etc, unless made of something like unobtanium, will take a certain torque so you know what the maximum load is that you can apply. Adjust it down for alloy unless it's anodized, maybe up if it's titanium or maybe if it has an odd thread. You know what each fastener has got to do or hold and how the fixing is being used and you get a feel for it. It's all experience really. Though there is a bit of luck sometimes too.

And I can't get stuff recorded on my Sky box transfered onto my hard drive or onto DVD, how do I do that?

I've managed to shear my share of heavy duty bolts as well. The first bike I worked on in a bike dealership was a KH100/KH125 or something and I had to drain the oil. When I looked underneath I got my left and right back to front and broke the drain bolt. Luckily it didn't strip the threads in the cases actually, just sheared off the thread which then undid, luckily by hand.

Tighten it 'till it strips and then back it off 1/8th of a turn so it locks up solid!?!
