I was asked today a question about motoring that I could not answer, which is fairly unusual!

"Who is the biggest British owned car manufacturer?"

My guess might be Morgan, Noble, or London Taxis but what is the answer?

Its LTI, London Taxis International or they might be known as Carbodies now, price's start at about £30,000 and believe me they are well over priced and I speak from experience frown.gif

not biggest by any means, but Ginettas resurgence is encouraging

I don't think Noble are actually making cars at the moment (they are 'in development')

If you discount Taxi's, them my guess would be Caterham (if you discount the fact that Aston Martin are owned by a British lead, but mostly Kuwaiti financed consortium)

As their vehicles (be they 'ride on' or 'ride in') are road registered, my erstwhile employer, Applied Sweepers Ltd of Falkirk, might be quite high up the list too!

similarly Alexanders Busses of falkirk.

when you think of what we made even a genneration ago, that is a bloody sad reflection of the manufacturing industry in this country!

Morgan made 640 cars last year. Anyone better that (I can't find figures for Caterham)

It reminds me of the advert, following the formation of British Leyland, to the effect of,

"Watch out BL, we're Britain's No2!"

... from Reliant.

Who would have thought that Morgan might end up being the largest home owned manufacturer of motorcars.

At one time the U.S. produced over 50% of the cars in the world, but it looks like we are following in your footsteps. I am not sure we still make 50% of the cars sold here and if we do, that probably won't last long.

Back to Morgan, I don't know if they are sending the new car over here yet. I have not seen one nor heard of any in the States yet. If they are not, they could increase their sales by doing so, but I have the impression that they are conservative and would not want to expand too fast.

Cheers, Jim.

There's still a number manufactured here, though. If I borrowed squillions and bought BMW it wouldn't really make them British.

Depends on where you borrow the money...

;)

OT, but Koenigsegg is the largest swedish-owned car manufacturer.
Both Volvo (Ford) and SAAB (GM) are atm US owned.

Potenza Sports Cars Ltd., likely. They own Westfield and GTM
