Dear Friends,

My favourite Rally car is Porsche 911SC MARTINI from 1978 SAFARI Rally.
I collect everything about these two cars driven by Vic Preston jr & Bjorn Waldegaard.

Can anyone identify what number is this car: 5 or 14?

If you have any interesting photos or other information please send it to me.
Thanks in advance!

A bit too late for me.

Were the cars left hand drive? If so, the windscreen wiper not sweeping full screen would have been a real problem and may have been mentioned somewhere. But it was probably fixed at the next service point. If not it might provide a clue for comparison with other photos.

With the spotlight mounted on the right-hand door, obviously for the co-driver to use, the cars must have been left-hand-drive.

World Rallying 1 has a photo of Waldegard's Porsche and it has two wipers that clear the whole screen. Not that that proves the photo above is Preston.

I've a few pictures of Waldegård's car, showing clearly that his mount was left-hand drive.

Carles.

Nikolay,

I have been meaning to post this for some time.

In 1978 Porsche made a factory film titled 'Afrikanisches Marathon: Safari-Rallye 1978'. This is probably the film you are looking for:

The only DVD format of this film I have ever seen was when Porsche was featured on PBS's 'Great Cars' series.

See here: http://www.dvdempire.com/exec/v4_item.asp?...item_id=1271807

The other factory produced films on the DVD feature the '71 LeMans 24, 1971 Nurbürgring 1000km and '76 LeMans 24.

Finally I took this photo when I was at the Porsche Museum in '03.

The spotlight on the door has nothing to do with navigator they were desighned to let the locals know a Safari car was coming, and because the spots were mounted higher up they go less mud on them
