I noticed the other thread "The mistakes that could decide the title".

We F1 fans obviously prefer a championship with fewer mistakes and the outcome determined more by action rather than mistakes.

But life isn't fair. And a lot of it is also due to luck. So let's make a big list.

Obviously I am biased against Hamilton so I quote 2 incredible pieces of luck he has had this year. However, feel free to chime in with luck that Massa has had.

Monaco - hitting the wall through his own fault which actually gave him the best track position. Nobody, not even McLaren or Hamilton could have predicted this.

Singapore - simultaneously only just making it through to Q3 due to the misfortune ahead of him (I forget what gifted him this, someone please remind me) and his main rival getting a screwed up pit stop thanks to his team.

Any more? I welcome hearing from instances of luck for Hamilton OR Massa that have affected this year's WDC. In my opinion, Hamilton is not just very good, but also very lucky.

And please none of these stupid cliches like "you make your own luck". Luck is being fortuitous, it is the roll of the dice, the game of probability. You can steer the odds in your favour but instances like the 2 above have nothing to do with "making luck".

was alonso's car breaking down in Q2. actully that set him up for the race win...

for massa theres france, lucky to get the win, and not get hit in the face by a pipe, and japan with his collision with bourdais

Hamilton's lucky events:

-Hamilton finished 0 points in Canada because of his own mistake so Massa had great chance to get some big points but his team screwed up his race by not fueling his car in pit-stop.

-Massa had technical problem in Hungary and finished the race with 0 points, Hamilton also had technical problem and finished with 4 points.

-Hamilton touches the wall in Monaco and it gives him the best position to win the race.'

-Massa is heading for an easy win in Singapore but his team destroys his race by horrible pit-stop

Massa's lucky events:

-Massa's heading for 8 points in France but Kimi has problem so Felipe gets extra 2 points

-Massa's is given 4 extra points because of questionable stewards' decision after Spa

Did I miss anything when one driver screwed up (or his team) and the other one could score good points but didn't because of circumstances out of his reach?

Well you could argue Massa was lucky that Hamilton missed the red light in Canada for all number of reasons ; both Canada based and France.
Massa was lucky that Hamilton got a phantom penalty at Fuji.
Massa was lucky he didn't end his race clocking Hamilton at Fuji.
Massa was lucky not to get 10 place penalty or worse for China after clocking Hamilton at Fuji. wink.gif

Massa was unlucky in Australia when his engine died. This race only saw 6 drivers cross the finish line. Massa lost 4-5 points in this race..

Or of course he just set a fast enough time to get into Q3?

Toyota employing the right-no-wrong strategy with dry tyres on an increasingly rainy track?

Could, would, should... The title is decided, get over it. Hamilton is now a Champion.

Here's another one to add. Hamilton got lucky in Brazil when he choked and was overtaken by Vettel and lost the championship and then luckily got it back. McLaren/Hamilton claim that they knew they would overtake Glock - I say "bullshit" - just take a look at the faces in the McLaren garage for a start.

The best driver/car combination has won the last two championships. What you call luck I call team work. Massa's engine blow up wasn't bad luck, it was bad quality control. The fuel rig wasn't bad luck, it was bad team work. It's team sport after all.

Hamilton was unlucky that:

The safety car came out in Canada,

The FIA decided to hit him with a double penalty.

The FIA invented new regulations after Spa

A puncture deprived him of points in Hungary.

The FIA made another two new rules in Japan.

Yeah, shame about that BMW that just happened to block him trying to unlap himself when he shouldn't have been. That forced Hamilton wide and allowed Vettel to get the run on him. But don't let that get in the way of your fantasies.

Hamilton is lucky, however he is no longer a lucky rookie but a lucky Champion now. Nothing can change the fact now lol.gif
