Really? Even Hamilton admitted that Kimi did not lack balls, it was just that Ferrari could not get heat into tyres

There is another thread for that discussion.

Brawn criticises Hamilton race strategy

McLaren team boss Ron Dennis labelled Ferrari's alternate approach as possibly the result of "aggressive race strategies".

But Honda team boss Brawn told reporters: "The safest place to start from is right at the front.

"The McLaren is fast enough to get far enough in front with a short first stint not to drop not too far back into the field after the pitstop."

Q. Almost all of the time that Lewis is giving away to Massa is in the middle sector on that Q3 run. It's almost four tenths in the middle sector?

RD: The guys at the front are on three-stop strategies - simple as that. It's just fuel load. You don't have the level of competitiveness that we had in practice and Q1 and Q2 and then suddenly lose it.

We know how much fuel we put in the car, we know what the expected laptime is for that fuel load and we were close to that time. It's purely a different strategy. The problem with a three stop strategy is that the whole thing is refelctive of what they have to do an d what we have to do. The three-stop strategy gives you tremendous vulnerability to two things – rain and safety car. And our objective is to come in the first five. We knew that we wanted to eliminate those things.

Obviously Toyota isn't a threat. Massa, we don't have to beat him, we can finish behind him, so we have to avoid first-lap incident and run a disciplined race and I think our strategy will become very apparent to everybody and that's our target. To go that light really puts you at a huge risk if it rains.

Wanted to post this too smile.gif (and added the last part btw)

I think he is wrong with the highlighted parts though.

somehow i don't believe Kimi is on a 3 stopper, even for massa i have my doubts

I think 3-stopping is very much possible, but more as a flexible strategy to change from 2-stops to 3 by making the second stint very short or either very long.

Don't forget that Trulli did three stops in Brazil last year, as did Kubica - OK, so did Ham in the end, but he didn't plan to! Trulli, Kubica did plan to.

The option wasn't there for RK this year, but it looks as though Trulli is three-stopping again. Which means he shouldn't necessarily be slow/hold people up in his first stint, as he may be light and he needs to go AFAP to maximise his track position.

Not that Trulli was all that light last year - he pitted on 22, 42 and 63 (out of 71), Kubica pitted more evenly - 19, 38, 58, Massa pitted 20, 50, Kimi 21, 53, Alonso 22, 52, Ham 22, 36, 56. So RK was the only one who was light.

If you look at Q3-Q2 yesterday - Massa 0.49, Trulli 0.63, Kimi 0.87, Ham 0.97, Kov 1.15, Alonso 0.88, vettell 1.24, Heid 1.27. There are a whole load of variables and possibilities, but it certainly looks as though two men are lighter than the others.

I discount the 'fantastic lap' theory - Q2 was about the closest in history - Ham 2nd in 1-11.856, Piquet 11th in 1-12.137, ten cars separated by 0.281, can't be that complicated a track. So how can somebody suddenly be fastest by half a sec without some reason other than driving?

Still if you do the math, three stops is good in Brazil, maybe Massa is planning three and it will give him victory, who knows? Or maybe he's just giving himself the option of either two or three.

Ferrari is so gentle to tires so somehow I don't see them doing 3 stops knowing rain is possible. Also it was said in one interview that Massa made mistake in Q2 which costed him 0.3s so the difference between Q2 & Q3 should be bigger.

agreed, one of the few genuine circuits left, rickety grandstands set in the middle of the city with a set up that causes the drivers discomfort. This is what we need more of to get the disillusioned fans back rather than 20 races in the desert.

3 an a half hours to go now, what is weather like in Sao Paulo.

i just remembered one thing

Monza> Trulli> Hamilton
Rob
It would be better for Ferrari to have Massa scarper off into the distance and control the race. In that respect it would make sense if they are three-stopping him.
