No it's not! It's not curious at all, that's exactly what a reflection is!

Transparent bodywork might be final proof that Ron Dennis was abducted by aliens... and negotiated a technology transfer? We've seen this technology before:-

Ronspeak: The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes high performance mechanical conveyance has no transparent cover fin material built onto the fossil Mobil 1 power-generating synthetic lubricant using Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines - made in Brixworth - mechanical energy conversion system. That is the indisputable and unarguable truth. We will kindly and wholeheartedly, if you cut me I bleed McLaren, let the FIA to investigate the cover fin material on the fossil Mobil 1 power-generating synthetic lubricant using Mercedes-Benz HighPerformance mechanical energy conversion system of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes high performance mechanical conveyance. But we would like to see - with our McLaren bleeding eyes tired of seeing the engine cover of our high performance mechanical conveyance - more transparency in the rules and the investigating process.

transparent carbon???

I vote for reflection. Look at that one:

I have marked a part of the suspension that is being reflected and which does not exist on the other side of the so-called transparent fin. Compare it to the original version posted earlier.

Or possibly some fermionic condensate.

Who gives a shit. Focus on the suspension geometry of the MP4-24, which seems way more complicated than that of Ferrari

Note the larger amount space between wishbone constructions on the McLaren front suspension.

PS: With all this talk about the McLaren engine cover: didn't anyone notice it is a sharkfin which is running down instead of straight? Notice that it almost touches the rear wing
Chubby_Deuce
I don't think that you can say that it's more complicated based on the number of appendages. No doubt both teams spent a fair bit of time determining what geometry would suit their chassis the best.

It could be that for aerodynamic or mechanical reasons McLaren have chosen not to align their track rod behind one of the A-arms, where Ferrari may have done just that.
Timotei Centea
This has to be one of the most baffling discussions I've seen around here. A flat and smooth reflective surface will reflect perfectly -- that's what mirrors do!

When I first saw a picture from top I said "it's like X-wing". The attaching points to the chassis are asymmetric relative to the wheel axle compared to Ferrari. Quite far towards the cockpit. I'm not an auto engineer so I'm interested what differences are there in the way the suspension works and in the behavior of the car on track.

If its transparent ...wouldnt the mercedes logo as well as the Mobile 1 on each side be visible from the other side as well? ...I dont see it drunk.gif

It is different, but I don't think there's anything mysterious about that suspension as I noted previously:

That's just it. If you were looking at a mirror from that angle, you would be seeing the exhaust, not the suspension. The suspension is coming from the same angle that your perspective is. You should be seeing a reflection of something coming from the opposite angle.

I know it's silly and doesn't make sense, but if you look in a mirror from an angle, you don't see yourself. You see whatever is at the matching opposite angle to you.

Explain it to me if I am mistaken. I still feel it has to be a reflection, but for those of you who are discounting what we all see, please explain why the reflection is coming from the same angle as the perspective.

Agreed. Except that you are forgetting the angle fo the perspective. If the picture is coming from a higher perspective than the reflecting surface, I would see the reflection of whatever is at the opposite angle. That is not the case in these pictures.
Chubby_Deuce
Are you under the impression that the engine cover sides are perpendicular to the ground?

Before you make even more of an idiot of yourself, take a flat mirror and place it 90 degrees on a horizontal surface with objects around it, then have a look around in it. It almost looks.... transparent, with the same objects on the opposite side in the same position!!! eek.gif eek.gif

With all these mirrors, are McLaren planning a smoke machine as well for the perfect deception?

F*ck off. I'm trying to have a decent conversation about something. I know plenty about reflections and perspective. I'm a visual effects artist. I do this shit all day long.

I've already said that it has to be a reflection, but I'm also saying that it is a bit confusing because the reflection is not what I would expect it to be considering the composition. down.gif

Everyone, Ferrari included, think those holes in the bodywork are for the exhausts and you have to go and let the cat out of the bag!

What else were you expecting from a flat reflective surface perpendicular to the ground?

Seriously dude, go get a mirror and teach yourself something. smile.gif

It is related, I'm just telling Texas how he can see the same effect seen on the MP4-24 with a mirror, he is the one telling me to 'F*ck off'. smile.gif

Thanks for your feedback though.

Here in Canada that looks like a balmy spring day. What a bunch of wimps not running in a little bit of snow!

"The Renault appears to be a mirror image, very apt "

As has been pointed out, the author explains why the Renault is a mirror image. He went to a lot of work to find suitable images, get them lined up correctly to be able to draw those comparisons.

In my opinion the article would have been poorer without the inclusion of the Renault .. so I can live with it being a mirror image. Great illustration, well worth a read of the original article http://www.pitlanefanatic.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=550 up.gif

Bad weather is relative in deed. smile.gif Anyway it was hailstones, and squalls attacked the motorhome of McLaren, so the team had to disassemble it, and go to an empty pitbox for shelter.
