I don't know what is the real name, we call it end rod, it is for the toe in/out adjustment.

Looking at the undercut sidepods that seem to be extreme on the Brawn and prominent on the Ferrari and others, it seems Mclaren cannot do that whilst the KERS is situated in their pods. Absolutely, the undercut sidepods are IMO one of the easiests to spot signs of an aerodynamically sound car. Even last year it could be seen how much difference it made to the laptimes when McLaren was able to use the smaller air intake on one side (Hockenheim, Spa, Shanghai), thus allowing more air to travel through the undercut. And now Brawn has the most undercut sidepods by a significant margin and they're dominating. I'm not saying that it's the only reason they are so fast, as frankly their whole car is visually (for what it's worth) more advanced than the rest, just that it plays a notable part in the advantage they seem to have.

In the UK we call it a toe-link. Very normal on a double wishbone suspension.

Either that, or it's just there to create some extra "wing" for more downforce, with no other function at all. By making it unsprung its part of the suspension and not a aero part....

Or am I missing it completely here??? confused.gif

Lol, you can see the joint at the end of the wishbone, without this "toe link", the upright will rotate freely.

Today testing, again flow-vis pain all over the car. I think problem is on the front wing and how it's send flow to the back of the car.





Rear brake ducts have two chanels now.

Tyler Alexander, a McLaren stalwart and one of the few remaining members of the team to have worked alongside original founder Bruce McLaren, is to retire this month, McLaren confirmed on Tuesday. Alexander’s career has spanned five decades at the pinnacle of motorsport. As a young US mechanic with a passion for racing, he joined Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd in 1963. He rose to become one of Bruce McLaren's most trusted lieutenants and, later, one of the burgeoning team's principal figures. According to Mark Hughes ITV.com once they have found where the problem is being caused, they should be able to sort it out pretty quickly... 1/3 of a seasons seems a bit over the top but you never know with these things.
Does anybody know length of stints Hamilton is doing?

Haug could be correct. While there is some degree of progress it is only a small increment, not the quantum leaps that we fans are hoping. I think by the end of the Jerez test McLaren will be roughly around 0.5 secs off the pace of Ferrari. This is better than the 1 sec difference in pace that seemed to suggest looking at the Barcelona test results. Anyway, all we can do is to hope and pray that they don't stay at the back end of the mid-field for too long into the season.

My feeling is they are not sure even know where the problem lies (hence all the equipment attached to cars and flow vis tests) so predictions when it will be fixed are not worth much. My own prediction (which is worth even less) : problem is pretty fundamental otherwise they would be over it already and will require a B-spec car - So 1/3 of a season at least.

Whitmarsh didn't specify when they will solve the problems - he only said it may take a while. Also Dennis didn't state any date - he said McLaren will have additional days in Jerez while the rest won't, nothing more.

Haug was the only honest man of the three because he gave concrete figures.

Depressing for a defending champion to be in that position. Reminds me of the sad sight of Damon Hill as defending champion. I never really forgave Williams for that.

Haug could actually be the only dishonest one, as only he gave a concrete time on something which he has no idea how long something is going to take

whereas the others didn't know how long something is going to take and so quite honestly couldn't give a concrete idea

Sure. Same if you read too much into sth you will find positive stuff while there isn't any.

No worries, with the new points system there is still a chance to win the championship even if the start of the season were to be abysmal, if Mac are able to win all the remaining races starting from the German GP in July. rolleyes.gif

Good point. Every team which has troubles at the beginning of the season can take several first races as test sessions and still be able to fight WDC in the second part of the season.

That's a bit of a non-argument. Not a single F1 team would prefer to start the season lagging behind.
A good head start is very important, and with the new point regulations it won't matter if you will have to fight back or defend.

A win is a win.

I can't believe that's what they want to be seeing.

This is just after it's been put on the car. Once they get up to speed it will then shift and show the direction of the airflow...(way to tell is that he's driving out of the garage! wink.gif )

A team with very poor reliability with great speed will be greatly rewarded with this system (providing they can win).

I think the point (and distinctive change from the old system) is that now you're still in with a chance even if you hypothetically don't score anything in the first 6 to 8 races, whereas with the old system you'd be out of it already.

In McLarens current situation that's an unexpected glimmer of hope, to say the least.

Looking at recent FIA decision, guys at Woking must feel that Christmas came seriously early this year. Limited testing is allowed and WDC will be decided by the number of wins, so a killer B car introduced later on might have a fair chance of winning, say, 4 races and grabbing the title (unless other team dominates first part of the season).

Reliable, but (too) slow..

Making up 3 or 4 wins is pretty difficult, but there's always 2 drivers a team, so I guess you're right smile.gif

Is it me or is the Mclaren looking like its held together with duck tape. The quality seems to have gone out the window! The car just looks a mess! I just hope it's short fixes by the test team and when it comes to Melbourne it will look like a proper F1 car again.

Just thinking: McLaren have shortened the front track of the car in order to be able to fit those special wheel covers, that means the tyres are further inboard and hence the turbulence coming off them will be in a different place too. Maybe they've miscalculated how this is affecting the car downstream, as turbulence is hard to model confused.gif
