Happy 10th Anniversary Atlas F1 Bulletin Board clap.gif clap.gif

Just realised that earlier this month this board celebrated 10 years on the world wide web. Well atleast the board in this configuration. It was around before but was shut down for a number of months before re-opening as we know it now.

---------------

November 1998 seems like yesterday really.

Mika Hakkinen had just taken his first world drivers championship. Anticipation for the 1999 season was high - with the Empire (Schumacher) expected to strike back.

Hurricane Mitch left a devastating trail of destruction in Central America.

Bill Clinton is in the process of being impeached (stained dresses, cigars).

Iraq ends cooperation with UN weapons inspectors.

A court in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan declares accused terrorist Osama bin Laden "a man without a sin" in regard to the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.

Maguire and Sosa had just recently ended their epic home run battle - with Maguire winning. Only to be beaten by Barry Bonds 3 years later. All still under the shadow of potential use of performance enhancing drugs.

Star Wars Episode 1's trailer debut's in theatres and fans buy tickets for the movie "Meet Joe Black" just to see the trailer and then walk out.

-----------------

But during this same period, this very BB your on now emerged with Bira corageously at its helm.

Its been an eventful and entertaining decade on these boards. Some brilliant discussions and arguments but also some nasty battles and civil war. But it all has come to shape this board.

And it all hasnt been about F1 today. The Paddock Club and TNF fast became havens for many who perhaps wisely didnt want to get caught up in arguments about who's driver is better. The games forum providing a fun way to make the races "interesting" while the "Live" forum providing an invaluable service to all of us not able to get to a TV screen!

So many great threads over the years and many great posters have come and gone or are still here. Many friendships made and many conversations enjoyed. Shared the laughs and the sad times. This BB would make an incredible time capsule.

I'd just like to congratulate bira and everyone on 10 great years and lets hope the next 10 are as good or better up.gif

Absolutely. up.gif clap.gif

Well said Gerry!

I can quite honestly say that over the last (almost) nine years since I registered, the Atlas BB has shaped my life the most, along with my wife and my young son. It really has had that much of an impact on me.

The board has seen the very worst and the very best of times, from death to marriages, posters who suffer awful attrocities and setbacks, to birth announcements and celebrations. It has all happened here, from posters that no longer are mere words written on a screen, but become people you know and converse with almost on a daily basis, and wish to know more about.

The days taken off-sick at work - almost resulting in a sacking at one stage lol.gif - purely in the pursuit of being here because it mattered. And of course the 'meet and greets', with that caravan at Silverstone being a definite highlight. That weekend seems so long ago now ...

Roll on the next ten.

Wow, over ten years already!

I still recall getting an email from Paul asking if we could sign up on this Bulletin Board thingy and get some discussions going…..and look what happened. Paul, Bira and I joined on that first day.

As Don would say: Whoever would have thunk it!

Shame I missed these at the time!

Poor old Pascal, eight years to sell a car on the internet? Noris McWhirter may be interested in that! lol.gif

Some lengthy, and amusing posts from Jp also. clap.gif

Class.

Here's looking forward to some more!!

Wow ... it has been a long time. I joined in 1998 when I stumbled across it while searching for something else ... then left ... forgot my username etc. and rejoined again ... must say, the interface has not changed much, and somehow I prefer it!

How time flies - missed a couple of years, but resident ever since. I'm sure I had less grey when I made my first post!

Caravan? what caravan?wink.gif (sorry again that I broke it) ah but you missed the bed spread car towing and the fire jumping the year earlier. (mind you so did I having crashed asleep, having pretty much missed the GP itself!) I was there for the fence renovations.

That was 3 and a half years ago!!! before I went offshore... christ!!

Then there was the Beer rocket at Shiftins. Lost, one Fin, If found return to nearest bar. I still wish I had that chat log from that night!

Happy Birthday Atlas!
Pascal
Wow! I completely missed the fact that I have now been around for more than 10 years! eek.gif

My first surviving post is here, proving that I was among the pioneers even though my registration information now shows 1999 because of a database glitch.

As for my Lancia, it is now a distant, if bittersweet, memory... wink.gif

WOW...It's been that long already!? eek.gif clap.gif clap.gif clap.gif

Don't remind us...wink.gif

Interesting and enjoyable times, then and now. I've been to an awful lot of places on the net, but AtlasF1 is the one constant and MyAutosport is still my home page, both at home and work.

Ahh ...sweet.
Let's cosy up round the hearth, have a cup of cocoa and remember a time when our gem of a island was newly wrapped in its swaddling clothes. My how things have changed since those salad days.
This thread exudes a vision of gazing back at the old family photo album.

10 years on the internet.... Seems to me like 100 human ones.

Happy Birthday Atlas!

I'll never forget that weekend, I'm sure the log is somewhere on one of my backups one day I'll dig it out.

To think the directions the Fin gave to the taxi found the one and only asian run fast food outlet in the country that just happened to be at the end of Shiftins Road.

The Monkey Sanctuary from the following year was also a highlight, of which I still have photo's kicking around my PC.

Atlas Fight Club also comes to mind as a time we all came together to kick the living crap out of each other in the name of fun.
F1Johnny
I have been following Atlas since at least 1997. Maybe not technically a bulletin board but views could be posted. I posted here.

Is not the current RC actually the second RC? The first being zapped to the Outer Darkness by Bira no end of good and worthy reasons?

Yes. The first was closed in mid 98 and re-opened in November 98. It was still called "Readers Comments" until 2004 I believe where it became "Racing Comments"

F1Johnny - thanks for the link up.gif

No problem. Any way to change my "Member since: " date? Not sure why it is 2001.

It is also of note that The Nostalgia Forum is now in its tenth season, having gotten started during November 1999, a year after the RC re-appeared.

If Racing Comments is more than 10 years old I will be swiftly redirecting it to the Nostalgia Forum. lol.gif

And we STILL have the same colours in this BB to pick from!wink.gif

Never met so many people from one Bulletin Board/website over the years. up.gif up.gif thanks all.

Missed this anniversary as well....

There's only one message board I know I could compare it to for longevity, which I have frequented throughout the 2000s (having been established in February 2000), of which I am an administrator, and which is still just about limping along. I came onto the net for the first time myself in August 2000, and recall 'learning the ropes', as it were, at message boards sometimes of a related subject matter, and occasionally not, all of which seemed to be busy communities of real confidence much as Atlas F1 is now. That so many seem to have perished without trace is a credit to the journey undertaken by this place, although with that hindsight in mind, I have no idea how it therefore took me so long to register here myself!

Anyway, I'm rambling hideously. A belated yet nonetheless very hearty congratulations to Atlas F1.

TNF is now in its tenth season. It will celebrate its tenth birthday in early November of this year, although few will either notice or care. I think that it has made a significant contribution to research on the history of motor racing, something for which Bira must be given her due credit. Without her, there would never have been a TNF.

Discovered Atlasf1 by chance really, while searching for F1 news, and after a while i found the forums and never looked back tongue.gif

A bit "thanks!" is in store for the people setting up, and maintaining this BB to this date, and for all the work the admins put in to keep it as neat and tidy as it is up.gif
Frans
I remember being invited to come and read the discussion ........ somewhere in 1999 ..... I still remember who asked me ......... but I could be wrong, could it be Pacman???

Thanks for all the fun through the years. up.gif

Tardily ... as usual...

Very well said, gerry up.gif up.gif up.gif

Thanks again to Bira, Mr Kaizar, all the admins, and all the contributors -
those still with us,
those who have gone to the The Great Paddock in the Sky,
and those who have stopped posting but one day (we can only hope) might come back...
kiss.gif smile.gif kiss.gif

It has been unutterably amazing to take part in this, to turn into a fogey doing it, and to have (believe it or not) benefitted immensely, even as breathing this oxygen for so long proves that I truly don't have enough of a life (but then, what is life if this is wasting it?)...

And, of course, as a Canadian, gotta say:

Sorry. wink.gif
