Thanks, the second-last picture, with MIke flat on the tank, is just stunning!

It is a ripper, Barry. I suspect it is from Montjuich Park, 1967, but am happy to be corrected...

And before anyone enquires, that's Ian Richards going off the line with Mike at the amazing TT of 1978.

Hello John, could you tell us more about that ?
Here the two other pics which do not appear on the first message.

Two greats - taken at Mondello
David M. Kane
I had the pleasure of talking to him the pits at Watkins Glen in 1972. I congratulated him on winning the F2 title. He was genuinely stunned that I even knew about it or even cared. He was very humble to the point of being almost embarassed like a shy schoolboy. I got the impression he a was very down to earth kind of guy.

I was very impressed.

I never saw him race a motorcycle, but I have some records of the Isle of Man which set my imagination loose. up.gif

A previously posted pic of SMBH by Eddie Whitham, taken at Oulton Park in 1959/60. Mike's mechanic Jim Adams is sitting on the bike, while the far rider, with the white helmet, is Bob Anderson.

As we all know, Mike raced on both 2 and 4 wheels. I donīt think Iīm alone in saying he was first a bike racer, and then a racer of cars. I donīt mean that in the sense that he raced bikes before he competed in cars, but rather, he will always be remembered primarily because he was one of the greatest exponents of racing on two wheels.
He once said his failure (if you could call it that) to shine on 4 wheels was a result of his inability to set the car up. He actually never understood how to set a bike up either, if certain people are to be believed, but he was able to ride around the problems, which was something very few riders were able to to do.
Mike was seen as the man who could tame any sort of machine given to him, and he proved that with his rides on the MZīs, which were absolutely awesome, as were his outings on the big Honda, the Ducati and 4 pot Suzukii in the IOM.
He was a definitely a one off.

Dr Watt ? - shocking performances i hear - had difficulty in staying on the circuit ..... stoned.gif

Anyway, i think we are moving away from the subject - it's my fault and i apologise.

My only excuse is my youth - as far as the forum is concerned i hasten to add.

No reason for this. Just thought we ought to have his name at the top of the forum for a while

I don't know who he is either. Obviously Mike was driving the Surtees car, F2 If I remember, could well have been the year he won the European Championship.

Just a little anecdote I remember about The Great Man...from what I remember as reported in The Comic...

I think it was about '71 when he had a test ride at Mallory on John Cooper's Yamsel, he came back into the pits after about 3 laps and complained: "It's a bit low, isn't it?" The fairing and exhaust were ground away on the right hand side.

Mike could lean a bike further than most in the days when tyre technology was in it's infancy and chassis development was inspired guesswork.

A class act. up.gif

Never seen a pic of Mike on a TZ until now. I hate to say anything negative about the great man, but somehow he just doesnīt look at home on that bicycle. Iīm sure he was as fast as lightening on it though.

Found the Programme. 19th September 1971, Race of the Year, Mallory. No. 3 Mike Hailwood.

Junior race heat one won by Barry Sheen, 2nd Barry Randle, 3rd Derek Chatterton, 4th Rex Butcher, 5th Barry Ditchburn, 6th Jarno Saarinen, 7th Mike Hailwood, all 350 Yamaha's

Final: 1st Agostini MV, 2nd Barry Randle, 3rd Barry Sheen, 4th Mike Hailwood, 5th Jarno Saarinen.

I think he didn't start the Race of the Year, but we all remember who won that one!

A couple of pics taken by me in my misspent youth. Both at Castle Combe. I think it's Tony Godfrey in the Background
in the second one?
