Full Version: Spa or Monza. Which to choose in 2009?

After following GP for 50+ years it is sad to find myself having to consider which "traditional" contests to attend before they (and yours truly) become extinct. I appreciate progress, but would hate to have to retire from traveling before visiting the shrines of GP. I barely made Imola in time and realize I need to choose carefully over they next few seasons. I will attend Monaco next month and must limit myself to one more GP this year. Which, if either, might be more vulnerable to Mr. E’s ax, Spa or Monza?

Just to get the discussion going I'll offer my perspective FWIW.

I'd suggest doing Spa/Monza as a double. That's what a number of people on Atlas have done in the past if you go through the archive. The race dates are often very close. If that is not feasible this year, maybe you should consider your other single race to be Silverstone before it disappears to Donington Park in 2010 or outside the UK altogether?

Good luck with your decision!

Haven't done Spa but have done Monza and many others. Monza has definitely been my favorite one!

I think both will probably remain but to choose between them is very difficult.

I was disappoined with the revised Spa, but heck La Source through Eau Rouge & up to Raidillon are still the same. up.gif Spa 1994 was the first F1 race I went to. Teams accused of cheating, driver disqualified - things never change!!!

Monza is more than a race, it's an experience. If you have the time go for a few extra days. Stay in Milan, visit the circuit on the Thursday (Monza currently best for 'pit visit' imo), check out the old banking, have your photo taken by Fangio's car, spend a fortune in the mile long merchandise area.

Have a great time which ever you choose.

Both tracks are majestic, breathtaking and full of history.

Spa on a rainy day and seeing the clouds hanging lower from where we were standing further down the track, standing at the top of Eau Rouge looking down and seeing how steep it is and seeing the cars take it flat out, La Source, the bus stop (now sadly gone though.....big mistake) and sitting/perching on the rocks above it with other fans, hearing the sound of F1 engines through the trees, the frites with mayonaise wink.gif

Monza with all its history and many memories and memorials, the old oval looming ominously in the background (and, ahem, walking/climbing it under the weary eye of a bored guard), the tifosi, hearing the sound of F1 engines through the trees, Lesmos, Ascari, Parabolica.

Choosing between Spa and Monza is just impossible and ideally you should do both: one this year and next year perhaps?

I did the "Spa/Monza double" last year, and back in 05' (it was the other way around back then)

Given that you've been following F1 for so long, i recommend you got to Spa. It's more of a journey than the experience Monza offers. We're talking about splitting hairs here, but to walk the track at Spa is something that will stay with you for ever... You do wonder how it is that they came up with a track like this all those years ago. Monza is steeped in history and is very special in it's own way. But you can see so much more around Spa. I dare anyone here who's been to both to say that they'd prefer standing at Parabolica instead of Eau Rouge??? I think not....

If you can live with a disorganized event go to Spa.

If you want to see well organized and fully functioning 'infra structure' at a F1 race, go to Monza.

I have done both, and both are great race tracks, and you should go to both.

If you can not do both this season, I am sure both of them are still there next season as well, so you can catch up there.

I walked all the way round Spa in 1999. I thought knew how steep the hill was up to Raidillon because I'd scrambled up the spectator path by the side but it was amazing to look back down to the 'Eau'.

My vote would go for Spa. Absolutely amazing. Sitting on the banks on Pouhon, seeing the cars come belting down through the turn and then catching a glimpse of them as the make their way through Blanchimont up to Bus Stop gets a huge thumbs up from me up.gif

And then there's Eau Rogue...

Spa if you really have to chose 1 or the other. Sit opposite the old pits after La Source & you can see right the way down to Eau Rouge.

I agree. I've sat in the covered grandstand opposite the old pits every time I've been. Trying one of the new grandstands this year. Gold 3 - 'right sight'
