Apart from the usual ETCC race at Silverstone in 1978, there was a race for the Trans Europe Trophy as well. This unofficial Group "1B" championship was a well-kept secret with quite a few races across Europe - but foreign entrants were very scarce.
According to the program, at the Silverstone TT meeting (sept 17 1978) there must have been such a race; photograpic evidence is here
Now does anyone here have a result of that race? I'd like to add it to the site.

This appeared on 10/10th's recently and the first place I looked was your site!

I was there for the TT, marshalling at Club, but I just can't remember the race. The front of the grid looks to be mostly UK Group 1 cars.

Frank - that picture is from 1977, not 1978, sorry, but I think Rich has mis-captioned it.

On a good note I do have some of the results, programme and Autosport report from the 17th September Trans Europe and TT races in 1978 as Dad did both, the latter sharing his Capri with Ernst Berg.

What info do you need?
Frank de Jong
Hi Gregor,

I'm sorry to disagree, but I'm fairly sure it is 1978 because of two reasons:
-the track and advertising are exact the same as the 1978 TT shots he made (and those sure are 1978)
-I think the Capris are Mk3 models, and those started racing in 1978...

I found an entry list of the 1978 TT ETCC; but my results are not complete; I don't have anything on the 1978 TTE race apart from the hint that a BMW won it ambivalent.gif

That's ok Frank, am happy to be disagreed with as makes me think and question my research. I can't see a blue and white number 20 Triplex Capri anywhere in that picture but I can see what I think is a DTV-looking Magnum. I know my late Dad did the race in '77 (sharing with Colin Vandervell), 18th September and qualified 15th and with 9 cars in front of what I think is the Magnum at the start (with Dad's demon starts) it would add up to me as '77.

As for the Capris I think '77 and '78 was a mixture of Mk2 & Mk3 cars and '78 was all Mk3 cars (Dad updated Colin Vandervell's '76 Capri to a Mk3 for '78).

Do you think the black car at the front is Walkinshaw in a BMW? I think he drove one on in '77 and '78 - so that doesn't really help!!

Am just interested to answer these questions and as I said, happy to be corrected.
Gregor Marshall
Just checked '78 TT Autosport report and Rich's picture definitely isn't from that race - all the BMs have huge front and rear spoilers plus pole was Walkinshaw, 2nd Joosen and van Hove in a similar BM and 3rd was Schicjentanz and Redman in a Daimler Benz AMG - no Capris as this picture, sounds more Gp2 than Gp1 looking in the picture.
Gregor Marshall
Right, that photo is the Diners Club Trans-Europe Trophy Race from 1978 but it's not the 1978 Diners Club International Tourist Trophy - if that makes sense!! Two very seperate races, even if there was a lot of double entries.

If you enlarge Rich's photo the BM is number 11, the 25 Fabrege Carpi is Stuart Graham and the red 16 Capri is Gordon Spice, all as per the programme for '78.

I can't work out any of the other numbers and I can't work out the Magnum behind the Mk2 RS2000 Escort and next to the Mk1 Golf or the fact I can't see Dad's Capri but he had qualified 13th so maybe he is the funny-angled car behind the Magnum-looking car.

i think we've got there now!!
Frank de Jong
Yes, they were two separate races for sure, sorry I didn't make that clear.
In Germany at the Tourwagen GP they did exactly the same, though the TTE race was on Saturday there, in Silverstone I think it was the same day.

Rich's photo is incorrectly titled, got there in the end!!

Which race is it you want the result for; the TT or the Trans-Europe Trophy race?
Frank de Jong
The TTE race most of all, but I have gaps in the TT race as well...

The copyright date on my first photo of the three of the start of the 'support race' is wrong, as you have noticed, and wil be corrected. But are you saying the correct date is NOT 1978?
Can you put me right, please?
I'm missing all my Tourist Trophy programmes, for some reason, I think I must have loaned them to someone and now forgotten who it was.

Frank - I'll scan what I have and e-mail you (doing the 1982 stuff at the moment).

Rich - apologies, it is 1978 just not the TT race (great picture as usual though!!).

Regarding the original picture pointed to in this thread: http://s271.photobucket.com/albums/jj127/d...7SSIT042-07.jpg, is that the Haribo Talbot Simca Rallye 3 mentioned in the Talbot Horizon thread? Car spotted around row 7 betwen the VW Golf and Vauxhall Magnum starting from row 5.

Folks—a little bit more info.

I used to jot down some brief notes after each race I attended…so this from the Diners Club International Tourist Trophy Race Silverstone September 16/17th

“Also on the programme was around of the Trophée Diners Club (they’d also sponsored the Spa 24 hour race).
Mostly supported by the British Grp 1 Championship Tricentrol boys, some of whom were also in the TT, there were few non-British entries . However, Hartmut Bauer ran his smart white and green KWS Ford Escort RS 2000; Thiery Tassin his silver VW, Alfons Hohenester a battered cream Audi and a handful of Simcas.
Walkinshaw ran away with the race and Spice just managed to nail Graham on the run into Woodcote. Bauer had little trouble beating Alan Foster (??) and took 5th place behind Blackburn.”

Also I noted that Win Percy (Toyota) beat Hohenster.

So I’d say from the grid photo it’s

Row 1: Walkinshaw- Pentax BMW pole, Graham-Faberge Capri 2nd and Spice- Autocar Capri 3rd
Row 2: (? )-white Capri: (Craft?)- Autocar Capri
Row 3: Blackburn Toric/Klippan backed Capri in yellow and blue (from my TT notes). Also note two non-runners
Row 4: Bauer RS2000: (?) - yellow RS 2000
Row 5: Thassin VW, Vauxhall Magnum (in DTV colours), and alongside could this be Hohenester’s Audi?

Further back there seems to be a Mini behind the Magnum and Jesper may well be right as the Haribo Simcas were at this meeting too.

As Frank knows when I moved to the USA I sold all my programmes and Autosports so I can’t give any more details than that.
Absolutely love living here but miss my info sources!!

Alan Foster would have driven the Vauxhall, and since the TTE probably used class limits on 1600 cc, 2500 cc and above (just like Spa) Bauer would have beaten Foster for the class win.
