Next question

What does the combination of +QUOTE and "REPLY buttons actually do?

On other forums these are default settings -
Hit "REPLY and the quote appears at the top of your post, or
Hit +QUOTE and it changes to -QUOTE, then hit "REPLY and the quote does not appear (ie like using ADD REPLY here)

But here, if you hit +QUOTE it changes to -QUOTE, but when you hit "REPLY the quote is still there, ie it appears that nothing has happened confused.gif

Tim Murray
It's very counter-intuitive. If you want to quote one post only, click on the 'reply' button for that post. If you want to insert multiple quotes, click on the '+quote' button for each post you want to quote. Illogicaly, the '+quote' then changes to '-quote'. Then click on 'add reply' and all the posts you have previously selected appear in the reply box.

OMG...It's must be a FireFox browser issue because I have it with IE8 but not FireFox.10 why would it choose to not load one Icon? Any FireFoxers here with this same problem? Hack, do you have an idea as to why this is?

Seemingly it uses ieSpell on IE7 and perhaps something built-in to IE8, therefore is not available on other browsers. Personally, I'm a fan of the inline spellcheck of Mac Firefox, which is also available on both platforms with Safari. However, that's not a great solution if you don't use those browsers, so in time I'll see if there are other spell check add-ons for IPB.

We are seeing some intermittent glitches and are looking into it. This relates to slow search queries holding up the database.

Unlike the old version, the new search mechanism does not work for a inquiry of three letters - such as FIA. A search on FIA produced no results. Its very hard to call this an upgrade when it doesn't work as well as the previous version. Functionality seems to have fallen victim to fancy graphics.

As the default search engine was both rubbish and causing us database glitches, I have urgently replaced it with a very fast indexing system. This should be considered experimental, but in testing so far it seems to work well.

I would be interested to hear if it has improved the search experience and also if anyone still sees IPS driver messages.

Hack, could you introduce one of those +/- buttons to the important topics in RC? to minimise them. they don't update very often and it'd be nice to see more threads without scrolling.
you could auto open everyones if there's an important update perhaps.

I've checked a few other topics, and it seems that the printed version and the downloaded versions consistently show only the first 300 posts. There's no option to see, print or save the other ones.

Is there a reason for this, and can it be fixed?

There is indeed a cut-off at 300, which is to prevent over-use of server resources. I have tried this higher, but eventually the amount of data involved gets out of control. It really needs pagination, but that's not simple to implement, so is unlikely to happen in the short term.

Great work with the upgrade Hack and anyone else involved. Can't have been a easy task considering the amount of data and custom code on the old board up.gif up.gif

I can just find one thing that I miss from the old forum, the ability to only view posts from a selected user in a thread. Would be great if this can be added again some time in the future.

All members converted from the old software have no data protection preference until you specifically save either choice from the profile screen.

That is all well and fine. The thin ethical issue here still remains that it is okayed by DEFAULT when (my assumption) the majority do NOT think it is okay to share that kind of information WITHOUT approval in the first place. But the people that get their email's shared are often the ones that do not use the boad on a regular basis, hence have no chance to change any subtle settings in time. The other thing is that you have to know about the information that your emails are shared and that means you need to be well informed. Not only subject wise but also technically wise. The latter part of that is what I think brings a further ethical question to the subject. And finally - not taking up the feedback regarding this issue properly is not good in retrospect to the above mentioned.

I know there are many people around that have a couple of extra toolbars in their browsers and they don't know how it got there. It's mostly inexperienced computerusers that get's them "Google search bar" or "Ask.com search bar" and so on. That comes from an attitude-change in the moneymaking internet-buisness that is ethically questinable. One just "assumes" that you click off the default "you want to install the google search bar" when installing some freeware, but most inexperienced users do believe that if you want something - you have to specifically say so.

It's the same with the default option of sharing e-mail adresses that has been commented in this thread by some anxious users. So from my oppinion it is not okay to default that to an approval, when it should be the other way round so that you have to explicitly allow the use of private information. But than again you'd have to wait for somebody to explicitly give their ok for sharing their e-mail adresses - and most people won't do that, now would they....

This is a questionable development in ethical views regarding the integrecy and the use of electronic medium...
Slick
If it is not already on your very very long list of things to do, Hack, could you please consider adding an adjustment to the "go to first unread post" icon. Either changing it for words or making the icon a bit more obvious. Not a high priority change, but a few people have asked how to do it because they haven't noticed the icon.

I have noticed, that it's not possible to see all posts by a single poster in a thread by clicking the number of posts, by that poster, in the post-count list.

Will this be enabled later on? I like this function, and I use it to fast-check what I, or some specific poster, have written previously in threads in case I wished to repeat or quote smth.

Hi there smile.gif I agree with what you're saying, but I think what Hack means is that sharing emails is not the default option...even though that's what it looks like. drunk.gif

My understanding of the situation is that until a user actively selects Yes or No from the relevant dropdown menu, nothing is done with the data. The default option is not to share, it's to do nothing.

If I'm wrong, I leave it to Hack, Ginga or someone else close to the software to clarify. Indeed, my post was simply a quote of something Hack had said earlier. I brought it forward in the conversation in the hope of addressing the anxiety expressed by ()qo3lav1236 and many others after Hack's post. If my participation only muddied the waters further, I apologize.
