The inaugural Abu Dhabi grand prix could also become the sport’s first race to be shown in High Definition according to production services company LIVE.

Officially, the sport’s organisers, led by Bernie Ecclestone, have no plans to offer the 2009 season in high definition. However LIVE managing director and CEO Abdul Hadi Al Shiekh, speaking exclusively to DPME.com, revealed that they hope to produce the Abu Dhabi instalment in HD. If an agreement can be reached it would be a landmark broadcast for the sport.

“We have been in negotiations now for two months and we would love to present an international flagship event such as this in HD,” he said.

I noted a rumour about this in the BBC F1 thread a few weeks back, but its worthy for its own thread now there's a proper source. Hope it's in HD. smile.gif

No, they were upscaled standard pictures.

No one is going to be watching the Abu Dhabi grand prix anyway so it's a bit irrelevant.

Hehe why is that? Coz of boredom?
salamin
the layout of the track is really nice ... it's just that penis formed hotel at the main straight rolleyes.gif

Only the local TV station in ABU Dhabi will be broadcast in HD, not BBC HD or any other foreign tv station that offer HD channels. The same deal that Fuji TV has in Japan (which has been locally produced in full HD, not upscaled since 2005).
Yellowmc
Big deal. We'll never see it in HD, the local viewers will.

Bernie is not going to pay extra for it.
D.M.N.
HD update, apparently there's an interview with Bernie in this month's F1 Racing magazine. They ask him about HD - he says that it isn't far away, but only 50% of broadcasters want it. He says he'll produce a feed once there is more demand.

Wasn't it German TV that was the holdup? Seems odd that, and idiotic to be letting anything get in the way of HD anyway, everything is HD now, even a little compact camera takes HD video.

Abu Dhabi Doooooooooooo!

Fixed.

"Only" 50% want it because Bernard Charles must be asking them more $ for the HD feed. In any case, those who want SD can always use the downsampled HD feed, so it is a laughably lame excuse.

This weekend I watched F2 and WTCC in HD. And I was thinking "This is pathetic - F1, the most technically advanced sport in the world, and I can't watch HD"

If F2 and WTCC can do it - F1 can do it. Bernie needs to pull his finger out

Great news up.gif

Hopefully on freesat BBC HD, do we know?

I was wondering how long this was going to take. Dual-branding with LG as main sponsor of Formula 1 who is selling HD televisions would make no sense without broadcasting in HD.

If/when it is confirmed, BBC should release a press release here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/

Even the local channels here in Indianapolis broadcast in HD - including the channel supported by public contributions...

C'mon F1, it's not rocket science (or is it?).

Henrytheeigth
It would be cruel I think, better in Melbourne, coz we'd want more after Abbu Dabbi and will have to wait in agony till new season....

He'd transmit F1 via telegraph if he could get away with it ...

I'm getting 720p F1 here in Canada for a couple years now. Yes, 720p is HD. Raw satellite signal just gets overlayed on TSN.

Sometimes it gets dumbed down on the t-cam and I wonder how I ever watched it like that.

The race cameras are not 720p, you are seeing upscaled SD.

IRL and NASCAR are HD -big difference.

The cameras have been HD for a couple of seasons, but the HD feed never leaves the production truck. Bernie could air HD if he wanted to, but he wants more money for it which none of the broadcasters want to pay for.

Most of the world does not have HDTVs. In North America, it's a life priority to get a HDTV, other places simply don't give a sh-t about TV.
HD satellite feed is expensive -it uses a lot of bandwidth.

They need a Formula One Sponsors Association to get things like HDTV and full grandstands on Bernie's agenda.

No. F1 on TSN is in HD. Sorry. Watch the difference between Webber and Vettels T-cam. One is HDTV, one is PALplus 16:9 SDTV

Many people get confused by Sony's evil empire stating 1080p is "true" HD as well. 720p is the HDTV format right now. 1080p is a DVD format. I doubt we'll ever see TV signals switched to 1080p. There will be another standard above that by then.

Yes and another thing is that the PAL digital cable signals are far superior to the NTSC ones so europeans already have a really good picture where the step to HD is not as big as in North America.... That is why they don't care about it as much as others...

No it isn't. It maybe upscaled SD, but it is definitely not pure HD.
pacwest
I'll type this until I'm blue in the face. It's 720p. Not upscaled.

The fact that you use the words "Pure HD" point to you possibly not getting the terminology. True HD in your terminology is 720p.

The PALplus 16:9 signal coming from the t-cams doesn't get magically upscaled.

lolwut. I notice the difference in my TV as well, and the stream I get is SD.

We already said most cams are HD. The signal of those cams is then downgraded to SD, for the stream that FOM passes to the whole world. Several "HD" channels then play this stream upscaled. Seriously doubt that this isn't your case.

Formula 1 partner sponsor LG hosted an informal media ‘brunch' on Thursday afternoon to offer some insight into its activities – and that proved to be very good news for fans hoping to see a bit of HD action soon.

As well as showing off some exciting new technology developments – including a mobile phone video watch – LG confirmed it is pushing hard to try and get F1 to go fully high-definition in the future. And, if you head down to your local television store over the next few weeks, you may well see the first results of LG's efforts.

Back at the Monaco Grand Prix, LG took some state-of-the-art high definition cameras along with them to film some spectacular action shots of the cars from unique angles.

And Andrew Barrett, LG's vice president for global sponsorships, says the results – in full glorious 1080p – are absolutely mind-blowing.

He says F1 personnel he has shown it to have asked for copies – as it shows off car behaviour, such as tyres flexing and suspension movements, that teams have never been able to see so clearly before. He reckons that fans will truly come to understand exactly what marbles are when they see the tiny bits of rubber fly off the cars as they go around.

Interestingly, Barrett revealed that the LG camera crew had to have a rethink about how to film inside the Monaco tunnel after they found that the vibrations and noises from the car were causing the hard disk drives inside the cameras they had to skip frames!

AUTOSPORT has been promised a look at the film when it is ready for public release – so stay tuned!

Some of the onboard cameras were in upgraded SD, but nothing was in actual HD.

Why would the HD cameras need hard drives in them? Wouldn't the images/data be stored elsewhere?

For anyone that wants to get a visual representation, here's some 1080p footage shot in a racing car. Just click on "Formula Car Clip" on the right.

That does look amazing. I've just bought a new HDTV and I'm really hoping they make the Abu Dhabi race true hi-def. It will be phenomenal.
