I attended a race at Lime Rock and I am quite sure it was 1957. I was a spectator but did walk through the pits after the racing a got a few shots. I have no idea what this car is but I am sure someone will know the history or identity of it. Also, I will try to post an image of two Porsches in the pit area. I think that is Briggs Cunningham in the one on the right but have no idea who is in the second car. Thanks for the help. would just like to know what I have here.

Just a guess, but is this a '56 or '57 era Lister-Bristol?

There is a blurry picture of the car in the July/August 1957 issue of the SCCA magazine "Sports Car". The event was held June 8/9. The Lister was driven by John Norwood in the Fourth race, and by Ray Erickson in the Seventh race.

I see that the UK registration number is NVE 732. In the book "Archie and the Listers" there are two pictures of Archie driving this car at Brands Hatch on August 1, 1955,and the textsays that the car was a Lister Bristol and belonged to Noel Cunningham-Reid

You guys are fast. I was there in 1957 I am sure. Outside chance it could have been in the late summer or fall of 1956. Thanks for the quick response.Hopefully, here is the Porsche shot. As I mentioned I think that is Briggs Cunningham and the second car I have no idea.

Excuse me. In the Lime Rock report I mentioned, the Lister-Bristol is listed as race #170, not #70. Might not be the same event. There are no RS-type Porsches shown in the results as numbered in your second picture.

I am pretty sure it was Lime Rock. I did get to Bridgehampton but I thought that was later in the summer or early Fall. RN

The Porsche pic looks like the old Thompson circuit, that is George Weaver's version, which I suppose was #2. The first car in the thread was almost surely John Norwood's Lister-Bristol. I saw it run a number of time in the late 50s at both LRP and Thompson.

Maybe this link would help with the Lister enquiry.
http://www.coldplugs.com/thompson_raceway01.htmLook about mid-way down on the right column and you will see a photo Bob Columbosian's Lister.
Also, look at the photo of #79 on this page about mid-way down on the right. The car was modified extensively if it is Bob Columbosian's car.

After a discussion or two with friends I was told the Lister of Bob Columbosian's was destroyed in the late 50's.
The C-Modified of Bob Columbosian's you see in this photo most likely is an Ambro body. However I wonder on top of what frame?
Could it have been the orginal Lister frame?

The picture of the two Porsche was taken at Thompson Raceway on 26th May 1957.
#611 is Briggs Cunningham and #140 is Bob Holbert. In the second race of the day Holbert came first and Cunningham second.
For those interested there is a book about sports car racing in Northeast America in the 1950's due out in May 2010, including race statistics and @500 pictures / covers etc.. published by Veloce Publishing...author, Terry O'Neil

Regarding the Holbert ID, I thought so.
Regarding your upcoming book, if it is researched anywhere near as exhaustively as your Nassau book, it should be a real winner! I look forward to it.

Terry: As I recall the photo was at Lime Rock. do you have an entry list for Lime Rock in 57? Carroll Shelby was there and I have a shot of him in the pits along with the car he drove. It was after the race and he must have been talking to a couple of journalists. RN the Lister photo was taken at the same time. I have the slides.

I have ploughed through the material I have for 1957 and 1958 but cannot come up with any other race than Thompson 26 May 57 where #140 and #611 are together.
Also having trouble in placing #70, a Lister-Bristol. It raced as #170 at Lime Rock with Norwood driving on 9 June 1957 then was handed over to Erickson to drive "for fun" in another race. Could the officials have peeled off the number 1 to indicate a different driver? At that meeting Shelby was in attendance and was driving a Maserati 300S #8. Is that the car he is standing by in your other picture while talking to journalists?

Terry: here is the shot of the Maserati but I don't see Shelby in the photo. the shot I have of him is in my file and I will look for it and post later. thanks for clearing this up as to where they were taken. I didn't find the slides until a couple years ago and for some reason just assumed they were from Lime Rock. I don't really have much of the track but I may post one of them. Regards, Ron

According to the SCCA National Newsletter, Norwood was listed in the results as #70 at Montgomery in August, 1957 and at Bridgehampton in September, 1957. His car was listed as a "Lister-Arnolt" (a Bristol breathed on by "Wacky"?) There is also a photo of him at Bridgehampton with #70 in Tom Burnside's "American Racing."

The photo supplied is of the Kelso entered Maserati 300S #3051 driven by John Fitch at Lime Rock, 27/28 July 1957. He finished second to Shelby who was driving a Maserati 450S and won the race. Shelby's race number that day was #138.
Erickson had a Lister-Bristol there that day, but raced on #88.
I suspect that the picture of the Lister #70 was taken somewhere else, but do not know where.
