The Yorkshire Rose was (and still is) the logo of Manor Motorsport.

Does anyone know where the Virgin car is built? I know Manor's HQ is near Sheffield but isn't the factory somewhere else?

Too bad the naming competition is only open for UK residents.
Even more too bad that I don't live in the UK anymore. frown.gif

To be quite honest, I'd say its the best livery I've EVER seen in F1.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but Álvaro Parente is no longer their test driver after the tourism of Portugal decided not to pay the sponsorship they had previously agreed to.

You know, with all this talk of Campos, there's one thing about Virgin that has struck me as very odd: it's that as far as we know, Richard Branson didn't try his darndest to get Bruno Senna. He's already got one of the most famous brand names in the business world, but to ally Virgin with the Senna name would be an absolute powerhouse, even if the car wasn't up to speed. If I were Richard Branson, Bruno Senna would be at the top of a very short list of potential drivers.

Virgin VR-01 passes final crash test

This is how it should be done guys... three full weeks of testing at Jerez with the others for this new team.

Can't wait to see if they are in the ballpark in terms of pace hehe..

Branson has little to no understanding of F1, and little to no interest in making important decisions for the team. It's one of the reasons he's been such a successful entrepreneur.

If they show up and show everyone nothing but the rear end of their car my jaw will drop to the floor, I will suddenly have great respect for Virgin and choose Virgin airways always (when available on the route).

Yes, but from a purely business standpoint, he'd know that bringing Virgin together with Senna would be a huge drawcard.

Problem with national sponsor takes Álvaro Parente out of Virging Racing
QUOTE
The absence of the pilot in the presentation of the VR-01, team car for 2010, was symptomatic. There were in the studio for of photos and video of launch of the car only Timo Glock, Lucas Di Grassi and Luiz Razia - as opposed to when the team was launched in the presence of all four pilots. It was clear that something was wrong. And in the early afternoon, the Parente's manager [Pedro Santos] stated to Grande Prêmio a confirmation of the disruption.

"It was because of a bad behavior of our national sponsor. Let's see what happens in the future," said Pedro Santos.

Alvaro was very disappointed with what happened. "I learned today that I am no longer a driver of Virgin. This fact will have very serious consequences for the continuation of my career," he said, noting that he had the "duty" to inform their fans and supporters the reason for his leaving the team.

The entry of Alvaro's Virgin was based on a partnership agreement between its sponsor, the Instituto de Turismo de Portugal (Tourism Institute of Portugal), and Virgin. The ITP is a public agency that promotes tourism activities in the country. According to the driver, the deal with the team included tests with the car of 2010 and the simulator Wirth Research, as well as participation in the season of GP2. The team had the option to make it hold in 2011. "Instead, the ITP has decided - for reasons that I and my representatives not know - to not comply with the agreement that was reached with Virgin. Both my representatives and the Virgin repeatedly tried to contact the ITP, but never received any official response .

Parente enumerated facts considered important in the process of bursting. According to the Portuguese, in June 2009, three teams had the intention of having him in the season this year. Virgin was interested in August. In the final round of GP2, the circuit in the Algarve, the ITP expressed interest in sponsorship, "since the association was with Virgin."

In late September, although according to him, the ITP has decided the value of their participation in the season. Two months later, there was the definition of the Institute as a partner of the British team. Alvaro also said that the Secretary of State for Sport - a sort of Minister of Sport - Laurentino José Dias de Castro, met the Virgin on the eve of the confirmation of the contract, which would be signed after the presentation of the team.

Parente was at the event, but said he had heard from ITP the next day that there would be no agreement. "Obviously, we were all stunned," he wrote. "Since then, we had no more response. Today, as it is public because I was not with my colleagues in the presentation of the car. All this has seriously damaged me and it have compromised immediate and future projects. I'll have to start over with the aggravating to be involved - without any responsibility - a breach of commitments. "

Finally, despite the sadness, expressed optimism. "I'm sure I'll overcome this obstacle. As always," he said. The name of Alvaro still appears on the list of drivers from the official site of the Virgin.

I feel bad for Parente.

Latest rumour is that car will also be only added to races digitally to TV picture.

Team spokesperson commented:

"We are about to revolutionise budget level needed to go racing. We will add our car digitally based on CFD numbers agreed with FIA. Other F1 teams will be envy with what flexibility we can use with our car livery. We also offered to track owners in Turkey and China to provide digital Virgin Racing spectators crowds for empty grandstands at bargain price of €9,99 per single spectator avatar.

We are also contracted to provide whole track avatar for race in South Korea"

as portuguese im furious with ITP. Specially because they are spending loads of money to get Red Bull Air Race to Lisbon when it was much cheaper in Porto, and now they screwed Parente over. Freakin' unbelievable... No wonder the whole country is going bankrupt...

You have to wonder though...

USF1, Campos and Virgin all got their entries at the same time. Of those three, Virgin are the only ones who are where they should be in terms of development.

Just goes to show that Mosely only chose 1 proper racing team.

A bit early to say that yet, don't you think rolleyes.gif

If USF1 makes a car that outqualifies and scores better results than Virgin, is Virgin still the only proper racing team?
If USF1 shows up and competes the full season but does a tad worse than Virgin, is Virgin still the only proper racing team?

The only thing we know about Virgins car and it's development is that it's launched. If it's a dog or "where it should be in terms of development" is a bit premature to say...
The signs are that USF1 might have underestimated the development and construction time to produce two F1 cars. But the team also said that they would use as much time as possible in the design phase to optimize their design. Rather turn up late with the best possible car than turn up early with a undedeveloped car. It might be that USF1 ends up doing both... (turning up late with a underdeveloped car..).

I find it amusing how so many conclusions are being drawn with so little fact supporting said conclusions. tongue.gif

Do you think it should have been the same for Virgin Racing if Branson didn´t pay $40m in backing ?
I just wonder ? I think it should be more difficult without Branson.

Of course it helps to have solid sponsorship. The thing is that securing funds is part of running a successful race team. In this respect, some newcomers are doing better than others. In fact, a team like Virgin (nee Manor) is possibly doing better than some established folks, like Sauber. Good on them.

And now, just to avoid cluttering up the thread with multiple,one-line replies to topics raised:
- Shame about Parente. I hope someone steps up as a sponsor to keep his career afloat. Based on his performance, he deserves better than to go out this way.
- Crash tests passed? So Virgin is launched, ready to test and beginning on-track shakedowns with time to spare before the seasons starts? For a new team, that's really impressive. clap.gif

those "extra" steering arms always make me nervous, I'm still certain it was them buggering about with airflow that caused all of Mclaren's problems last year.

it'd be dead tricky to play "Guess Who" with this car ... it's got a Mercedes front and rear wing, a Red Bull nose, McLaren sidepods and Ferrari engine cover ... if Nick Wirth has somehow cherry-picked all the best juicy bits from the usual challengers, he could have a nano-budget CFD Frankenstein supercar on his hands.

Notice the tatoos on the front wing - they've been painted yellow/gold. It has detracted totally from the look of the car.

It was just a shakedown. No need to showboat with fancy aero designs...

That is one hell of a sexy car (I mean the livery).

Front wing looks rather basic though.

However we have our first shakedown of a new team. At least one have them have made it to the track.

I always had faith in Manor (sorry Virgin, but to me it will still be Manor).

Love the car! Definitely prefer F1 cars with pointier noses ala Red Bull 09 (mk1) and F10 (which the Virgin shares its double humpback nose with) over the bullnose McLaren. The Virgin reminds me a bit of the F1 car from Segas Virtua Racing too although Im sure Nick Wirth would not appreciate the comparison, computer graphics have come a long way as Im sure CFD has.

It looks a lot like the wings most teams launched with in 2009. I'm sure there are more complex versions on the way but for now they need to establish a baseline they can build on.

I'm amazed how contemporary this car looks. I was half expecting the new teams to turn up with something like a Minardi PS03, boxy and barely tested but a car that meets the basic dimensions and requirements to be an F1 car with some copied components from last years cars.

I can't wait until the next test to see how fast it goes!
