Some pics I took at the 2008 Coupes Moto-Légende at the Dijon-Prenois circuit . One at least of Ron Chandler's machines is said to be a "genuine" factory triple that he used in period , but I don't know if it's the Trident or the Rocket 3

Ron once told me that his BSA is ex- Jim Rice works bike. Mind you, his Triumph used to be a BSA too...here he's discussing it with Percy Tait and Arthur Jakeman.

The Trident on the left was still being used by him at the beginning of 1974 at the Trans Trophy, by the Powerbike meet in October he was on a TZ700/750

Henri-Michel should verify this;The 'real' one has a larger than usual (very large) rear brake,a legacy of when they used to 'flat track' them in the USA,with high bars and NO front brake!!Bloody hell, it frightens the crap out of me just thinking about it.

I spoke to him about the triple at Brands...think he said one has a lower, perhaps different angle steering head,and the joints are brazed ? To be honest, I as more intersted in talking to him about G50's/7R's and Tom Kirby.

There've been quite a lot of pics of BSA/Triumph as raced nowadays in our TNF and I've a feeling that the front mudguards are not really fitting. IIRC the works bikes in the seventies didn't have mudguards ? If so, did they race in the wet without them, too ?

They did Renn, at least that's my recollection. If a fairing is fitted, aren't mudguards cosmetic anyway?

Hi Russ, on second thought I have to agree. My first idea was that an uncovered front wheel would probably transport a lot of spray over the screen towards the rider's face....

Hi Renn, I can inderstand watercooled strokers wearing them.... loads of blokes fitted them to other bikes though, even when a fairing was used, makes me begin to think I'm missing something pretty obvious....exposed electrics perhaps? I have to say that I can't recall water being chucked over the fairing screen....but perhaps I wasn't going fast enough.

any info on the blue triple just behind Ron's Rocket 3 in you picture. I can't make out the name on the fairing and it also looks like the seat may be in a state of disrepair as it looks like it's being held together with Gaffa tape...

Indeed, those two guys from "Lowland Triples" were working on their machines and when they noticed I was taking pictures of their bikes they told me that I really should go in the box nearby where Ron Chandler had his "factory" machines . Sadly I don't have the programme with me here in Nouméa so I can't help you with the riders' name

I went to the 1971 Daytona 200 and can still remember the sound of the triples coming off the banking. Looking at the program and the photos of the triples none of them had front mudguards.

In the new issue of ' Classic Bike ' --- delivered today -- there is a 7 page article on triples , plenty of pics , the only front guard visible is on Gary Fisher's Yoshi -Honda , plus 1 other un-identified bike in a pic. just after the start at Daytona
Plus , of course , on Ago's MV in another shot

I've just spoken to Chris Chapman and the reason for the works bikes not having a front mudguard was the type of forks that the works bikes were using, if you look closely at Ron Chandlers BSA and then compare it with Paul Coote's bike you can see that Ron's doesn't have any mounting points for a mudguard.

However when in the wet most of the works riders did run a front mudguard albeit fastened on with jubilee clips... Chris runs his bike with a front mudguard and say's just look at the pebble dashing on the fairing and that's with a mudguard....

Fraid you've got some dissent on this one John..... I can honestly never recall seeing any of the factory triples, at least in the Pickrell, Smart, Tait, era, with mudguards, rain or shine. As for Jubilee clips.... I wonder if anyone has any photographic evidence? Excluding, of course, any bikes set up for endurance racing.

I can't find any photo evidence in my collection apart from the 24hr endurance bikes and a couple of pre rob north works bikes,

I think photo evidence is the only way to go, so if anyone has a photo of the works bikes in the wet, it sure would be nice to them....

Well Rhodie , i've been about for a loooooooooong time and a bit of a fan of ' Nixo '
Was'nt this bike a twin ?? rather than a triple ?/

I´ve just sourced it and it was a Doug Heal 500. So yes, I think it must have been a twin. Don´t know why but I´ve always thought it was the triple.
Shame on me.
