I don't mean cutting him loose entirely. I'm thinking more along the lines of dispatching him to a new team - someone like Campos or Manor - so that he can build that experience up.
I think that approach certainly has merit.
There was talk of STR being willing to take Piquet for this season, but Renault wasn't willing to pay.
Certainly would have helped build up his experience a bit more.
2001 at Minardi did Alonso a lot of good, Webber too.

Alonso in trouble for Briatore tribute - reports
2009-10-01
His Formula One future is secure in the form of a new multi year Ferrari contract, but Fernando Alonso may be slapped on the wrist for comments made after finishing on the podium at the recent Singapore Grand Prix.
Finally with something to celebrate after weeks of 'crash-gate' intrigue, the Renault driver dedicated the result to his sacked and banned team boss and manager Flavio Briatore during the international television segment of the post-race FIA press conference.
Two British newspapers claim Spaniard Alonso, 27, could be in trouble for his tribute to the convicted cheat.
"(Alonso) may face censure from the FIA after he upset the governing body", it is written in The Independent.
Another article, this time in the Daily Mirror, said F1 officials were "fuming" after the Briatore cheerio.
"The words caused furore in the paddock", said the newspaper.

So in a way - Alonso is actually the most expensive driver in the paddock? Having also made Ferrari pay untold millions for his entrance to the team
Most expensive and followed by controversy. Man, if he wasnt fast he would be out of F1 in a heartbeat. I guess the Ferrari car next year will be the measure. If only we could be absolutely sure Massa was a 100%..

Alonso was present at a hearing that attempted to prove that Flavio Briatore was a rogue element that in no way represents the ethics of either Renault the company, Formula 1 as a whole and the drivers he was managing. That's why Renault got off lightly, that's why Alonso wasn't pushed too hard in questioning.
So for him to come out and say what he did was just ridiculous.
A driver should be free to say what he wants, but everyone knows there are times in life that you should probably just bite your tongue. This was one of them.

I guess you missed the fact that what Alonso said had nothing to do with the singapore incident, and to do with flavios past contribution to renault, something which the renault boss himself praised a few days ago.

Yeah given his odd statements today, that's what I was fearing.
I actually think Kimi on the WRC would be awesome, but after all the hype about a Hamilton-Kimi pair at Mac, it'd be kinda underwhelming.
Haug's comments indicate they want Kimi. Whitmarsh has basically admitted they want Kimi. Kimi wants to continue in F1 if he gets a seat in a good team. So why the delay and Kimi's hints about retiring? To add to the endless speculation: what if McLaren already signed someone earlier this year (Kovalainen or Kubica maybe?), but now want Kimi instead and are trying to break the contract? Not probable, but in F1 you never know.
