I agree that Heidfeld can do better than Rosberg. But Rosberg is much more martketable and still has a learning curve for his career.
Heidfeld has been there for 10 years and is looking more towards retirement than to being a top driver on a top team.

This is correct but Mercedes are hoping to get him to break his contract if this is true. The only problem is that I can't imagine Red Bull needing the money and if they're more competitive than Mercedes what incentive is there for Seb to try and break the contract.

If I were Mercedes/Brawn, I'd take some of that cash Button left on the table and write Renault a little check to place R. Kubica into the Mercedes for a year or two.
Wouldn't it be great to see Kubica in a truly (no pun intended) competitive car! That would really shake things up.

In today's Autosport from Mark Hughes regarding Kubica and the general opinion in the paddock: "He made a brief but sensational appearance at Monza, not only rescuing a seventh-gear moment on the grass, where Vettel had put him, but making the pass too. Nick Heidfeld was of a high enough standard that Kubica wasn't always the team's cutting edge, and the current generation of control tyres have neutralised his ability to carry huge speed into medium and slow-speed corners,
but the peaks of his season were those of a very special talent and there is not a single one of his opponents who doesn't recognise his level. He is the one they all worry about getting in a competitive car.Seems F1 values Kubica more than many posters believe ....

2008 season.
Besides, in that seasons where Heidfeld had more points than Kubica, Kubica had much more problems with car.
Take a look:
Kubica 2007 season - rubbish engineer, rubbish gearbox and rubbish electronics, and much more.
2009 season - BMW crap, blown engines, turned down engines, KERS...And Australia (where Kubica could win).
