It's all about smoothness in the MX5, don't use more steering input than absolutely needed.
As A3 says, being economic and smooth counts a lot. Especially in the races, with the MX it pays a lot not to overdrive in corner exits, you shouldn't hear a lot of tyre noise there and your tyres will be in good condition throughout.
In the specific corners you mention:
- T1/T2: I think it's one of the trickiest parts, because if you lock a tyre even if only a little, you will probably put a wheel in the outside grass, and as it's a long corner, it's only a one way ticket from there to the wall. What I do is use the full width of the inside kerb so I can brake as straight as possible. It is also important that you stay always in the inside half of the track all the way trough T1 and T2: letting the car go to the outside to prepare for T2 doesn't work as there isn't much grip there. Also, you can accelerate earlier than you think out of T2 (before the apex), by using the banking in the inside. And letting the car roll through here as much as possible will gain you time.
- T5: The key here is to turn earlier than you think so you touch the little inside kerb, and lift just a little in the turn in transition to get the car rotated. There is a better banking in the inside so this way you will have more grip. During the races the lift will have to be bigger and bigger. If you go even a little to the outside, because of the banking, you will lose a lot of time.
- T6: There is a sweet spot between the kerb and the grass where you can put your car in and gain 1-2 tenths (you can see it in the WR video that was posted earlier). I actually haven't mastered the turn in point to do this yet, because finding references there is hard.
- T7: During qualifying and first few laps of the race I do this flat, and lift just a little in the turn in transition from mid-race onwards to save tyres (again: sliding from mid corner point hurts a lot the tyres!). The turn in point is where the elevation changes I think.
So if you didn't get bored to read all this, with a little practice you will get there! You got into 1:00's very quickly actually.

I actually rode onboard you for a while in your MX5 race. Congrats on the 2nd in the MX5 points standings.
I did managed a 57.8 lap at Lime Rock in a CR6.

Thanks. I got divebombed in the first part of the race so I lost like 5 seconds but I dont think I would have been able to overtake the leader anyway as he did a very fast race.

The CR6 is a blast; I worry I might neglect my MX5 homework! I'm still 0.4 off automatic D promotion and I'm wondering if I can get enough in tonight to pass the mark before I have to learn how to not crash at Okayama.
The CR6 is a brick with a fat engine and no brakes. If you want fun, drive the Skippy.

A had a fun race yesterday, slowly closing down the guy in front over four or five laps. Finally got within a car length then and in my excitement I downshifted from third instead of up in to 4th. BANG! D'oh.

Are you guys making sure to drive the RHd version of the MX5 to get best weight distribution for Lime Rock? With the Left Front taking an absolute beating in the race I would have thought it would make a decent difference. Most people in the race with me the other day were using it.

The Roadster version instead of the Cup version? I am using the former, but I keep getting beaten by guys in the former!

Just did a race and was mistake free up to lap 19, where I had one short trip off at T3. Got a SR bump of +0.15 to leave me 0.02 short of 4.0! One more trime trial was enough to see me to 4.40 and promoted to D class.
Now thats out the way, hopefully I'll stop driving like an OAP in a Metro.

Pro by the end of the Month....
I'm going to plug away at the MX5 until I have some raw speed. Probably some other series thrown in for a bit of variety.
edit: anyone want to give me some telemetry for the MX5 at Aida?
You know that you can only race in d series (or c series if your sr is higher than 4) ?

tbh i find im normaly the same away from the aliens in any given car/track combo, a few exceptions ofcourse ;)
i might host a couple of races when my pc is more sorted, i fancy some oddball stuff like hpd vs truck, and dumptruck(gt40) vs pickup truck

hpd on oval is quite nice too

You mean I can't take part in the IRACING.COM NVIDIA SERIES F1 races? Time to cancel my membership in disgust!
I'm going to carry on with the rookie MX5 series; it's fun, popular, and my lap times are still a couple of seconds off what is possible. I want to do other series too but at this point I don't want to have to throw too much cash at tracks in one big spending spree.
It used to be is your SR was over 4.0 and you had completed your MPR (minimum race participation) you would get a fast track promotion at any point during the season?

http://members.iracing.com/membersite/memb...01&carid=35Now for the race, hope it stays clean!
Edit: Started 3rd and came 4th. Top two guys within 2 tenths of WR qual pace in race but still managed to beat Greg Palmer and Tony Galliani who are top 5ers in the overall championship

Happy after an iracing race for once!

I don't know if anyone is going to turn up, but over the next for weeks I'll take a punt on the following hosted races.

It'll all be done in the MX5.
Sweet!

I'll try to be there.
I cant make it to Laguna, but will try to be there for the others. Nice password by the way

There's a bunch of dutchies I know from another forum, I'm pretty sure they'll race if you can't find more than us lousy 3.
I can be there for all apart from the first one

I'm not very good at Okayama. I'm all over the shop in the T2-3 complex; I'm not sure I've managed the same line twice! Then T5 just seems to be a never ending case of understeer. Can I repeat my request for some Okayama telemetry?

I can't record it now but you should take a look at the old (until this week) world record, you have an overlay with throttle and brake inputs, and the speed as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh8cRwfGsiwI don't like much Okayama, but the trick is, as always with the MX5:
- A lot of coasting.
- Slow in, fast out.
- T2/T3: do it as tight as possible, like T1/T2 in Lime. It may look like if you enter tight into T1 you will have to cut through the grass in the apex in T2, but it normally doesn't happen. T4 is flat.

Looks like I'll be at the parents this weekend now, so I can't guarentee I'll be back in time to join mymself! So the Beaver Beer 40 has been moved back, plus a 5th round has been added.
I like those dates!! I'll need to practice summit point!
MrAerodynamicist
Aug 12 2011, 11:12
So far my reaction has been: I don't actually like Summit point.
I haven't driven the short, but as for the full circuit: I have two styles on the first hairpin; understeer in to the gravel-trap on the outside, or literally park it on the apex then spin getting back up to speed. I then repeat the trick at the slow right hander (T5?).

Mmm... not necessarily. I´ve done hundreds of online races (GPL, rF, iR) in the last eight years and I´m getting more and more polite. If I
ever happen to overtake
anyone who has not spinned - it must be a mistake.

[Tool] iRacing FFB clipping monitor - Updated 14/08
http://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/1613166.pageWho would have figured I'd get smoother FFB by
raising force value and removing almost all dampening....?
I've always had everything turned off except for the force strength.
MaxScelerate
Aug 15 2011, 20:47
I had it off until two weeks ago.
But the point is not in damping, I used that to buff out little spikes.. It's that with the proper force strength value, HIGHER value, these little spikes become much more manageable (which goes contrary to sense in my world but hey! if it works).
I've tried it yesterday and I see what you mean.
Cranked the force feedback up to 12.2 for the Star Mazda @ Okayama, was using 5.0 earlier. Only problem was that this setting is way to high for Silverstone. So I guess I'll have to run that program for every track/car configuration?

It certainly helped with the Ford GT. I lowered the effects to around 8 (from 16) and the car suddenly was driveable!
Having said that I am absolutely hopeless in that car. Anyone else driving it?
