I've seen other transport planes using the ground effect, mostly to decrease fuel mileage and I remember reading or watching movie, the colombian narco-trafficants have used such planes for traffic and they also remain undercover because the radars don't catch them.

His posts are often very interesting, but I'm not sure they qualify as insights. I thought his theory that Obama is really a Romulan mole sent to earth to harvest humans as food was a bit shaky.

Incorrect.

It was a Talosian mole, not Romulan. When you look at it in that light, it completely changes the complexion of his arguments.

I've had the guy on 'ignore' for so long I didn't know he wasn't around.

the guy was obviously crazy, but was amusing

who knows maybe he was arrested, he is infact a potential danger

A potential danger? That's something he'd say...

I miss him too, he was supposed to contact me when he arrived and I'm quite surprised he didn't.

I was tethering to go to Beijing on the weekend and the fact he didnt contact me was part reason i decided to cancel.

You have no taste. Ernst Stavro Blofeld or Emilio Largo would kill to get their hands on one of these. Shopping list: Shark tank, check. Tupolev airboat, check. Jumpsuited henchmen, check. Submarine base hidden in volcano, check.

Um, try wearing a Tianneman square T shirt with a picture of a tank on it. Or Free Tibet. or whoever they are that sound like Star Wars or falun gong . Not that I actually give a monkeys, people get the government they can put up with.

Um, why would you?

I'm not about going to another country and intentionally pissing them off, I am a basically law and good moral abiding person who respects that I am not in my own country, behave accordingly to THEIR RULES AND LAWS and have zero problems where ever I go - I will further that to say I am most welcome where ever I go with my attitude.

I see it often here and also with a couple of Westerners who have come to my Lady for legal advice for some of their problems going about it with total arrogance thinking that everything should work and flow as it does in their own country.

Canuck
I don't think any reasonable person has a problem with the "when in Rome" philosophy ("doesn't anyone here speak American!?!" stories not-withstanding), but to suggest Chinese people are as free to express themselves as those in any western democracy is dishonest. Internet censorship of political ideas is but one tiny area. Maybe China has it right, but I don't feel that way.
Greg Locock
QUOTE (cheapracer @ Oct 18 2009, 03:18) *

I wouldn't, but the reason i posted it was the following exchange

somebody said
"Yes its amazing how you can get things done without obstacles like human rights, workplace health and safety, freedom of speech etc etc"
you replied
"As China has all those in place you must be speaking about another country. May I remind you that this is 2009."

Thus apparently indicating that you think China has the sort of freedoms we expect. I then gave some examples of freedom of expression that would be ill advised in China. That's why.

No you gave some examples of some things that would be intentionally affrontive and that were not related to what was written.

I can buy eggs on the side of the road by the way, can you? Theres but one freedom I expect, walking around a city at 2am in the morning carefree and in complete safety is another.

Because in the USA it's considered a God-given right to express one's self freely. People wear T-shirts with Obama looking like the Joker from "The Dark Knight" with a logo that says "Why so SOCIALIST" and stuff. Burning flags, etc.

It's dumb, but it shouldn't be illegal to be dumb.

Honestly, think of a T-shirt with Hu Jintao or Chairman Mao caricaturized to look like a villain from a blockbuster movie. Or burning the Chinese flag while news cameras roll.

You'd do it cos you're angry and it's a generally harmless way of expressing one's self, and a little arrogant and very silly.

But the point is that in the most successful, most civilized societies, we've dispensed with punishing peaceful disagreement with the government, stupidity, or arrogance. As long as it doesn't harm other people directly, who cares?

China's making progress, but even in 2009, they have a LONG way to go. A LOOOOOOOOOOONG way.
NeilR
"It's dumb, but it shouldn't be illegal to be dumb."
I cannot think of any country where being of low IQ or low mental capability, however I find your example somewhat disturbing as I find myself wanting to defend China's take on this. In my mind the freedoms you describe come with responsibilities, yet I might respectfully suggest that a large number of people in the USA would rather shrug off the idea that ANYONE would impede their 'right' to do anything (not that there aren't similar people in my own country).
Ross Stonefeld
Just as an aside, what are flag burning laws like in other countries? You don't see it in Europe, at least with the flag of that country. Even burning the American flag seems limited to really pissed off people in the Middle East/Asia/etc.

Though it wouldn't surprise me if the issue of flag burning is pretty much exclusive to the US flag and no one else really cares about it.
Tony Matthews

The Union Flag gets torched fairly frequently...
Ross Stonefeld
Where/why/wow often? I can't really recall having seen it, but maybe it's just not the ULTIMATE BREAKING NEWS it is back home.
NeilR

Funniest thing I saw in a while at the yacht club was a visiting British crew who at the end of a very long night in the bar were chanting "get your f-ing stars off our f-ing flag".
NeilR
bovver boy sailors...who woulda thunk it?...any of them fall in the water?
I'd be happy to drop the union jack off the flag...the issue would be what to replace it with...aboriginal flag might be just in a way but practically impossible.

Grins, oh yes it is frowned on. I'm quite sure The Committee were swallowing ulcer pills and blood pressure pills by the handful. Yes, there is one boatful that plays loud young people music, loads beer by the slab, is partially crewed by longlegged chicks, and um, wins lots of races nationally. Good on em.

china is not what you think, it is as liberal as france

there are only presumptions about china being strict communist country, its nothing like that

you have to obey the law though, and the punishement are serious, but hey thats how its got to be

But if you are living in compliance with law, it is all good you do not have to be afraid of anything

Same with Cuba

They are reading it in France.

QUOTE (crashgate @ Oct 21 2009, 21:33) *
china is not what you think, it is as liberal as france

there are only presumptions about china being strict communist country, its nothing like that

you have to obey the law though, and the punishement are serious, but hey thats how its got to be

But if you are living in compliance with law, it is all good you do not have to be afraid of anything

Same with Cuba

That is the typical defense of authoritarian governments: don't break the law and you have nothing to fear. That works fine until you are accused of a crime you didn't commit, or of breaking a law that doesn't exist. Then you are up shit creek like anyone else the government perceives as a threat to the state. Good luck with that. Then you have no way to prove your innocence as you have no due process. You are totally at the mercy of the state. Without certain and guaranteed individual rights, individual liberty means nothing. It can be taken away from you without a moment's notice.

Not to mention breaking a law that shouldn't exist (but does).
Canuck
Just do what you're told, think what you're told and for goodness sake, don't say anything they don't like and you'll be fine. What could possibly be wrong with that? wink.gif

I have a number of times now asked for an example but you seem unwilling to offer.

Continue to live thinking your free because your Government told you that you are but you really need to see both sides of the fence before you can make better judgements.

Mac your more intelligent than this, the same happens anywhere in the world and the above, strictly as written, simply doesn't apply to China. You are speaking to a man who's Wife is a top lawyer here with here own law firm with 20 lawyers in our city and a Senior Partner in a major cities law firm so don't you think I know a little about what goes on law wise? Don't you think a normal evening conversation between us is about what case she is doing?

Doesn't that fact that there is law firms here tell you something on it's own? If you were at the mercy of the "State" why would there be lawyers?

Good lord...a strange comment. Is there not a centre (would not like to call it a jail as that would legitimise it) in Cuba, owned by the USA that holds people without due process, charges and keeps them in conditions that are not only against the laws is much of the US but generally considered against the constitution of the USA?
crashgate
who do you trust?

-the guy that LIVES in china

-or the guy that lives in US/Europe whatever and knows about china only from what he heard on tv or read in newspapers

end of story

go to china and find for yourself.

I myself lived in Cuba for a year as a exchange student and I have experienced zero, I repeat zero problems, oh yeh and I had a good times, plenty

What sort of law does she practice? Has she represented one of the several thousand Chinese executed each year?

Embezzlement; rape of children; fraud; bombing; people trafficking; piracy; theft; corruption; arson; murder; poaching; endangerment of national security; terrorism.

No mention of narcotic dealers. I don't think they have any.
