Hi All,

I've been doing some work on tyre modelling for simulation and am trying to gather some info on the Hallum tyre model. To date we've been working with Pacejka and recently looking into Michelin's TaMeTire, but I've stumbled across a few references to Hallum's temperature model. Has anyone out there worked with this before?

Cheers

Not me. You've got his sae paper?

Chuck had an interesting way of looking at things. Some of his ideas had merit, but I think he was a bit off base. He really didn't have any proof for what he proposed, so the 'model' was suspect at best. A lot of his ideas came down to the explanation of "It is intuitively obvious that.....". I talked directly with the guy after he gave a presentation at one point. He was really sharp, but I was never sold on his tire philosophy.

The fundamental aspect of hallum's model is that he assumed a stick-re-grip mechanism and a lateral deflection of a tread element. The selection of this tread deflection always seemed arbitrary.

Nick Trevorrow did a thesis that expanded on Hallum's model and varied the deflection based on the asperity sizes in the road surface. He also factored in more detailed rubber properties. Apparently it was too compkex to implement even at F1 level, but it does give a fantastic intuitive feel for the mechanisms at work.

Yep, that was Chuck. The Iconoclast. I liked his two SAE papers on drag slicks and NASCAR tires, tho the thermal model is kinda different. Very sharp, nice guy too. Did a lot of different stuff, interesting person to talk to.

Not yet, but a friend is getting a copy for me. Thanks for the replies.
