Completely agree. I've been following F1 since the late seventies and have always thought him to be arrogant and devoid of any class. As a three time champion you would think he would have a higher standing among F1 fans, but his attitude and conduct have done him in.

But how? I've never read or seen any interview where Piquet appeared arrogant or selfish. He always spoke with balance, never underestimated the rivals and never spoke about himself as the second coming, like Senna used to do. He had infinitely more class than Senna who, despite ultimately being the better driver, was extremely egocentric, bullyish on track, selfish and arrogant.

The test happened on Nov 14th, 1983 in Paul Ricard.
Bernie wanted to sign Ayrton and had a contract ready, so on that day, Piquet, Senna and Mauro Baldi run the Brabham-BMW.
Piquet came out 1m06s faster tahn Ayrton.

Piquet 1m06s faster than Senna? ohwell.gif

Piquet riuscì a completare un giro in 1m05.9s. Senna invece perse il controllo della macchina proprio nel suo giro più veloce. Ottenne solo 1m07.9s

Piquet was of course a great racer on track, but in Argentina became quite unpopular after he won the title fight against Carlos Reutemann at the end of 1981 season. I noted that during my own childhood, when I tried to be a Piquet fan at the start of 1988 season and my family saw me as a stranger (I didn't know the 1981 story then).
Later in 2006, he gained another stint of unpopularity in the Pampas when Nelson Piquet Jr. took over the testing place of Renault F1, over the hopes of José María López to secure that place.

But you were right to do it, bcs Piquet raced several years with the Argentinian and Briton license. redface.gif

Piquet had issues with the Brazilian Auto Federation asking for obscene fees to local drivers and after retirement tried to stablish a pirate league to promote cheaper local karting/racing series.

But he said he does not understand the hysteria about 23-year-old Piquet Jr's actions.

He is right. Senna worked so hard on building his own image and myth that he managed to go unpunished for the biggest travesty in the history of the sport, something that really called for the most serious punishment.
I may rant about Räikkönen's first lap at Spa this year but the fact is it remained within the realms of racing. Senna's action was pure crime and he should have been arrested for it.

He would like, but lives in Brazil... Living in S.Paulo, I've gone a couple of months to work, first through the Senna tunnel and than taking the Senna highway... The yellow helmet guy was (unfortunately IMO) not only a bloody quick racing driver, but also the first "only-media-counts" sportsman worldwide. And I even prefer Schumacher, who had his RTL- contract, than Senna's "behind-close-(back?)-doors" way...

BTW if my son would like (thanks God it's not the case...) to be a racing driver, I would support him as good as I could...

Yes, undoubtedly Senna relied on, used and manipulated the media to build his own myth. A great driver but even greater manipulator. The irony of the fate was that the final and most important part of the myth that he had been building so skilfully was completed by his tragic death.

Senna's bashers and haters pay too much attention to his personality...

Piquet threw punches at Salazar. Piquet called his teammate wife ugly. Piquet called Senna gay (Just like Briatore, the worst person ever). Piquet waited for his son to be fired to open his mouth. Piquet was a cheater in Brabham using a car that would get lighter during the race

Character is something that Piquet doesnt have that much... but Senna's haters doesnt care to that.. but the fact that Senna payed a lot of attention to his image.. wow.. that is unnaceptable.. they prefer the driver that does everything as long as they are not like Senna..

This is pathetic... but they have to attach themselves to this personality issues.. because one thing they will never be able to say: That Piquet was a superior driver to Senna.

And when it is about racers.. it is all that matters... Senna was quicker, faster, more talented, braver, better work-ethic, won more races, got more poles eventhough raced less times.

They are truly said that Senna died while leading a race, being regarded as the best of his generation and driving what was considered to be the best car.

While Piquet had to go away to drive Indy cars because he was being outqualified by his younger teammate in F1...

Senna had said he was avoiding the media to give Piquet a chance to appear a little bit and that was Piquet's answer. Piquet even had to deny this in front of a judge. We who are not descending from Brazil, may overlook the Senna-Piquet rivalry on the national basis and experience them in a different way.
Although their careers overlapped, they belonged to different generations (Piquet was 7.5 years older) and I would not make any direct comparisons. Some of us would not necessarily regard Piquet in the light of his comparison/rivalry with Senna but as the best or one of top 2 drivers of the first half of the 1980s.

This is not the place to bash any of those drivers, indeed this is not a place to compare them, I would say. Senna's myth require deep sociological analysis and has little to do with Piquet.

So according to you, Piquet never said or suggested Senna was gay.. he only used a t-shirt "fastest straight brazilian driver"

But Folha de São Paulo states differently. Piquet said that to Jornal do Brasil

http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/esporte...92u461420.shtml

So.. how do you explain your really nice alternative version to reality? roflmao.gif

Now, Piquet admitting that he called Mansell's wife ugly

And Piquet admitting he said senna was gay:

Tudo começou por causa de um jornalista do Rio. Ele me mostrou uma declaração do Senna dizendo que tinha sumido da imprensa por seis meses porque queria dar espaço para o Piquet. Aí eu disse que aquilo não era verdade e que ele sumiu porque estava há dois anos e meio na F-1 andando junto com um viado. Eu falei e todos dispararam a escrever no mundo inteiro.

Which pretty much means "Senna has disappeared, so he don't has to explain to the press why he don't likes women..." IMO a respectful answer from a 2x WDC when asked about being badmouthed by a (at this given time...) very cocky no-WDC, who always had a "wee bit gay" reputation...

And now please go worship somewhere else...

"Folha" and "Jornal do Brasil" are competing and completely different newspapers... Can you decide between the two and then we talk...?

Utter cr*p... Senna told it to Galvão Bueno, sports "expert" of TV Globo (who never had to do w/ the printed media, since analphabets... must I explain it really?) Please google (since you seem to like it...) for my sig and than you'll get the real version. Or not...

In your opinion a respectful answer?? And you changed it from "he never said it, he only used a t-shirt" to "it was a very respectful answer from Piquet"

Talk about worshipping... LOL

Why dont you show me the real version instead of telling me to google? The real version is in Folha de São Paulo. Piquet declared the real version to Istoé Gente (shown above).. All versions are crap.. so can you show me the real version?

I gave you many links, sources and even interviews from Nelson himself admitting he did it... and you... tell me to google the real version...

Are you the old man that used to live and go out with Nelsinho? Are you Nelson Sr's lawyer? who are you? roflmao.gif roflmao.gif roflmao.gif

Nelson admitted it.. His interview is ONLINE.. he said it was a journalist from Rio.. ... you lost.. go away... you can live in your alternative world.. but stop misinforming people from this forum with your lies.

I was a Piquet fan first- he was good looking and an awesome driver. Later I prefered Senna. Regarding Mansell wife (a very nice lady I think, not a glamouros-type but I'm pretty sure a much better wife than a top-modell pussycat), and the T-shirt case: somehow these are so very typically part of that era- these psycho wars. Strange that it has stopped now- all drivers pretend that they are all friendly to each other (most of the times tongue.gif ). I remember Senna, Mansell and Prost sending far-from-friendly messages to each other- compared to that Hamilton's "balls" comment was nothing at all wave.gif

I've always loved this picture of Piquet and Moreno:

My god.. the link is an article published in the Chicago Sun Times from 1988.. the article makes reference to an interview Piquet himself gave to the brazilian playboy magazine saying that Mansell had an ugly wife
