Full Version: Why are the tyres so fickle

Despite using a standard tyre all we heard all year was problems with tyres, particularly warming them up.

Is it that hard to make a tyre that's fast, easy to warm up and reliable?

I don't know but it must be embarrassing for Bridgstone really- all you can hear that everyone complaining about their tyres

Why not just let michelin provide the tyres

It isnt, but that isnt Bridgestones role at the moment. They are contracted to supply tyres to the FIA spec, and thats what the teams have to work with.

What I find the stranger is how often we now hear a driver complain about how one set of tyres is so different to another set of the same spec. That's something I don't recall in the past and makes you wonder if there is a quality control issue.
craftverk
fickle compared to what though? Who says any other tyre maker would make better tyres?

Because they were not interested in a single make F1, they wanted the competition.

Maybe Bridgestone is trying to save money- so they offer a relatively cheap and unreliable solution- still, it is bad publicity I think.

I would love GoodYear to come back so that we can have a decent tyre war. Michelin tyres never seemed consistent, EVER!

Tyres are fine, specific teams have problems heating them up. Specific other teams have problems overheating them. It's a compromise, no matter what tyres they produce some teams will err either side of the compromise.

And to answer the op, no it's not possible to make tyres that heat up easily, provide endless grip and never disintegrate. It's basic chemistry, the warmer the tyre runs the more grip it provides but it also wears more. Unless of course you have come up with the formula for self regenerating rubber.

The tyres seemed to work perfectly well in 2005 when we had the one tyre for the race rule.

Remember 2005? When teams werent allowed to change their tyres for the whole race? Michelin TROUNCED Bridgestone.

Goodyear are the worst tire manufacturer in racing. They're not in F1 anymore because they got run out by superior competition. They've gotten chased out of every racing series in which they've run against competition.

Goodyear routinely ruins NASCAR races with a rubbish tire at least a handful of races each year. They committed the most epic failure of a tire manufacturer in racing history last year in the Brickyard 400, a disgrace in the history of IMS matched only by the 2005 US Grand Prix debacle. The Michelin tire was only a problem for one team really that weekend (Toyota), but the company scared their teams into going along with a power play.

What happened?

We should go back to a tire competition. There was no problem at all during the days of Michelin v. Bridgestone. Any perceived problem was made up.

This happened smile.gif

and it was followed by a bunch of cautions to basically force Goodyear runners to change tyres so that it didn't happen again

So it was the equivalent of indy then, except they raced.

they worked perfectly if the name of the brand started with M and ended with ichelin and the name of the race did not start with Indy

seriously, tyre wars are stupid. you build the best car but your season is screwed because the other tyre company makes a better tyre. great sport

quality control and variance between sets is a problem. other than that...i have no mercy for "can't heat the tyre issue"....you designed your car, the tyres are the same
pingu666
goodyear is a spec tyre in nascar, so everyone changed tyres every 10laps, some couldnt make it that far on all the runs...
tyres where fine this year tho smile.gif

motogp seems to have gone to single tyre supplier also...remember rossi complained about tyres and switched them, proving it was a good case...it's so stupid to have such a huge factor between teams and a factor they can't control
