So did Brundle. You hire someone like Eddie Jordan to hopefully get an insider's view or information. What's the point of an expert that tells me the obvious.

That was a key part of the ITV coverage - and one of the reasons why Brundle was a coveted signing by the Beeb."

As a side note, the Daily Mail is known within the media circles to bash the BBC at every attempt - so it may be worthy not to read much into this.

I never watch or listen to my commentaries and I’ve hardly ever seen a Grid Walk other than a couple of snips I caught on YouTube.
I don’t have the time and I don’t find it comfortable watching myself. The fans, forums and blogs soon let you know how you are doing!
I’ve met some fascinating people on the grid: kings, prime ministers, movie stars, pop stars and even the occasional racing driver.
It’s like an alter ego for me, because I’m not the kind of person who interrupts people – I don’t really recognise the bloke who bounces around being cheeky and rude on the grid. And I truly hate bothering the drivers.
I do, though, love the adrenaline rush of what is five minutes of live, unscripted, unrehearsed, ‘car crash’ TV.
The Grid Walk has taken on a life of its own. It wasn’t my idea; it was thought up by Gerard Lane and Neil Duncanson from North One, who suggested I walk along the grid and talk about what I saw. I think we pioneered it at the 1997 British Grand Prix.
I seem to recall a rather less charitable description elsewhere, although I can't for the life of me remember where it was...

Cheers! It's funny he didn't enjoy it as he was damn good at it. But I do see that he felt unconformable in a position when he had to talk to the drivers minutes before the race knowing from his own experience as a driver that he would absolutely hate doing an interview in that moment. Still, Brundle's grid walks RULED, I'll be sad to see them go.

The grid walks haven't really been so good of late anyway though they did throw up the odd pearl, so I'll miss them if that's true.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how many wig references DC comes out with per broadcast though.

Eurosport are back as the broadcaster of record for GP2 Asia (In the UK, at least), and have always been fairly enthusiastic about the series. Even if they still aren't able to stick to anything remotely resembling their schedule.

As a Freeview only viewer I hope this isn't the case. But then, I also hope that if ITV4 were to retain it that they don't bring back that god awful Charlie

The likelyhood is that if BBC don't show it behind the red button then Eurosport will have it. Failing that, Setanta Sports is a very slim possibility.

Thanks, all. Some replies:
To themotorsportfan in #7: we're still working on GP2, and some other scheduling details. Clearly, we'll have a lot of new content from F1 itself - which will start with practice available online on the Friday of a race weekend. Catch-up F1 will later be on the iPlayer with highlights on this site.
But to BigBadDaveB in #9 and others: F1 won't yet be available in HD though we'd very much like it to be. I'll keep you posted.
To hackerjack in #17, how_was_that in #21 and others: let's be clear about F1. ITV said they were no longer able to cover it. So if the BBC hadn't picked up F1 then it would presumably have gone to pay TV - which would have been an enormous shame for the 10m plus audiences who've been watching the sport's biggest moments. We never comment on rights fees, but many of the figures quoted in the press have been significant exaggerations; and it was paid for within our existing sports rights budget. Jacobnewbury in #8 is right about what went out and what comes in!
Unfortunately therefore it seems like no HD for F1 coverage, and it seems like the money values being thrown around are huge exagerrations.
jb26 on Digital Spy Forums (

The line "which will start with practice available online on the Friday of a race weekend" should not be mis-interpreted, it will be on the Red Button and/or BBC Two.

i'd imagine it'll be on the red button/bbc2 but also probably online........as long as they show ALL the practice sessions, unlike ITV who never bothered with saturday morning practice

To be quite frank, even if we do have "such a comedown", coverage will be ten trillion times better than anything ITV have produced F1 related.
Also, at least we KNOW where to go if we need to complain, and at least our feedback will be taken in considering, I mean does ITV's Head of Sport do a blog like Roger Mosley does of BBC? Doubt it.
At least the saying "GMTV airtime" will never be heard again, thank goodness. Hell, I'm not expecting it to go 100% smoothly regards interactive in Melbourne, there probably will be teething problems, but it will be much better than the ITV coverage.

ITV weren't that bad really. They seemed to put a lot of effort into F1.. in particular their "behind the scenes" features explaining how things in F1 work. While I think the BBC will do a good job, I don't think ITV did a bad job. F1 is F1.. all you care about really is whats happening on the track and perhaps the voice who is commentating. All the rest is just an added bonus. For example with Moto GP.. quite often I switched between BBC and Eurosport for different races and it really didn't make any difference.
And someone pointed out a while back, while adverts were annoying.. F1 is so stale these days you never missed much anyway.. and at least you had a chance to use the bathroom.

I said it before, but ITV coverage was very underrated here. Yes, James Allen was annoying, Blundell was hardly insightful (which should be expected from a former F1 driver), and it looked like Lewis Hamilton World show rather than F1. But still, James Allen is a pretty knowledgeable guy there was a good pre show with reporters at the stop talking to drivers and team members, telling us about the various off the camera moments and general feel, and having a pitlane reporter who talks to the teams during the race is ace and reports on what is going on is ACE. Plus, Martin Brundle, no more words needed here. Overall, it was heads and shoulders over Polish coverage, that's why I was downloading it after the race.
We already know this, but it's nice getting it "confirmed":

Personally I always felt like I missed a lot during the breaks, and if you add up the total amount of time lost it's ridiculous. Why is it that some people require an ad break before they can go to loo? Does the TV control you so much that you can't make this simple decision for yourself?.

probably got something to do with the fact people lose out on between 15-20mins each race cos of (pointless garbage rubbish worthless) adverts, and dont want to lose out on any more time by goin to the loo when adverts arent on
