Red button and online would be the most they could justify broadcasting. I'm a loyal viewer when it comes to F1, but I wouldn't rearrange my Saturday to watch FP3 as well... that's not to say I won't bother at all, but I wouldn't want to let it stop me from getting more important things done.

What's more important ?
D.M.N.
From what I understand the only highlights programme on TV for raceday will be @ 19:00 on BBC Three. No highlights programme is planned @ 22:20 on BBC One.
stevvy1986
at least the highlights will be on at a decent time, rather than at like 11.45pm or something stupid on ITV

Says all on-track action, but doesnt include FP3. This was the same for ITV, so is that a money thing or does BE simply not allow FP3 to be broadcast?

We get FP3 here in Sweden så it's not like BE don't allow it smile.gif
FP3 is usually more interesting then FP1 and FP2 as it's more in preparation for the qual/race then just a test session.

Thanks for the new people, looking foward to the onboard caeras and extra data on the red button. Will have to switch between red button and BBC1

Shame to complain... But BBC3 has that damned awful neon-pink logo plastered at the top of the screen. Horrid evil.gif

Our page has been revised again:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/7755219.stm

Just a few quotes:

"The BBC's red button interactive TV service will broadcast live coverage of all on-track sessions and an extended show after each race and qualifying session, as well as offering alternative video streams, such as on-board cameras and F1 data."

"The BBC Sport website will broadcast live video coverage of every on-track session, as well as carrying all the television coverage."

"Among a number of other features will be extra analytical data during the race, in-depth looks at the drivers, teams, tracks and an F1 car, as well as reports, news and insight from the TV team, broadcasting legend Murray Walker and driver columnist Mark Webber of Red Bull."

Even though the FP3 situation isn't clear cut, I'd assume that will be shown. Only main point now is the Support races, unless they throw a few more surprises in for tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be a bit of busy day for news! BBC coverage details, USF1 and (maybe) Honda!

As long as they announce GP2 on the red button I'll be a happy chappy!

Oh and been reading Lee McKenzie on Twitter: http://twitter.com/LeeMcK Done a full test run through today.

Thanks dank for that link! biggrin.gif

A few notes to pick up from that:

- They had a full run through today
- Press conference @ BBC HQ tomorrow [DC will be there]
- Top Gear F1 Magazine special in next few weeks
- She'll be on Star in a Reasonably Priced Car (Top Gear).

This is worth noting on the BBC schedule page:

"The BBC's red button interactive TV service will broadcast live coverage of all on-track sessions and an extended show after each race and qualifying session, as well as offering alternative video streams, such as on-board cameras and F1 data."

Other notes from jb26 on DS:
- MotoGP's test (aka Grand Prix Zero) is likely not to be broadcast
- Delay regarding support races is due to rights issues... not much else can be said. Some good, some bad... changes to what jb26 originally said.
- CBBC will have some F1 content, again... not much else can be said
- Press conference will feature the main players involved with TV coverage (Humphrey, Brundle etc). A press release will be put out tomorrow... I'd advise you guys to check http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/ and http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/
- This will not be live on the news channel, although it'll likely get a few minutes at most on News at 6.

I suggest you guys check the two links above throughout the day, as well as the BBC Sport homepage, this thread and Digital Spy's thread (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=965927) throughout tomorrow.

Thanks guys for keeping an interest in this thread since last September... at least I haven't been talking to myself! lol.gif That's likely the last update coverage wise from me in terms of what we don't know... there's only one thing in the world that I could leave you with, and that's this [the music; not the pictures!]. Only three words left for me to say: Roll on Melbourne.

BBC Red Button is an interactive service where you can select from a number of programmes/sports at certain times. You may beable to activate it on your digital antenna. Just press the red button tongue.gif

but if you end up with a black screen, then you've pressed the wrong button

Suggest we keep eyes on Lee McKenzie's Twitter. Last night, she said this:

Since you have all been kind enough to take an interest I will give you a couple of sneaky bits of info about the BBC coverage tomorrow am!
about 9 hours ago from web

@gillw72 There will be news on the BBC F1 website by the afternoon.Photoshoot in morning and press conference lunchtime.
about 11 hours ago from web in reply to gillw72

And just now:
Every time an F1 car is on track, you will be able to watch it on the BBC whether it be through the Red Button or on BBC Sport website.
28 minutes ago from web

Her Twitter is at: http://twitter.com/LeeMcK

Well Lee McKenzie revealed absolutely nothing we didn't know this morning on Twitter... anyway, BBC F1 schedule page thingy has been updated: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/7755219.stm

Edit: FP3 will be on the red button.

Still no mention on GP2 and the other support races though?
stevvy1986
GP2 etc will likely be mentioned in the press conference/press release later
pRy
"There will be multiple live video streaming, which will mirror what is available on the red button.

For the first time, video will be available in high quality, enabling viewers to watch on the internet near-television quality video."

So in theory (if I understand it correctly) you could have the onboard stream running on your PC while you watch the normal feed on your TV. There will probably be a slight time delay but it probably wouldn't be a major concern... I think when I watched Moto GP online and on TV there was a few seconds delay.

It all looks quite promising, they've made the best start they could have really. They don't appear to have held back on anything really and offering all the feeds online is something I didn't expect them to do.

Sounds good from the BBC, although i cant really be bothered witht he split screens, multi views etc. Hope its not too complicated...
D.M.N.
Good news so far.... up.gif

But, note this from the schedule page: "a split screen comprising the main network feed; an in-car camera feed and leaderboard" hmm......
Imperial
Without the benefit of the full press release (yet) what is unclear I think is whether the practice sessions via the interactive service/red-button will only be available live as they happen, or will you be able to watch them later in the day as well?

Traditionally BBC use the service to allow you to choose to watch a certain court at Wimbledon, or a certain table during snooker but I don't think I've seen them offer recorded coverage of an event that happened earlier in the day. It is of course not possible to use your + box to record interactive content :-(

Available recordings (even just available on each practice day) of all sessions would be nice, as I'm at work on Friday's and would really love to watch the practice (with the benefit of the forward button of course!) on a Friday night. I work flexi time though, so I can see me watching P1 and P2 live from Oz then back to bed for a few hours before heading to work.
D.M.N.
The overall gauge on DS is that it'll be:

Feed 1. Main race feed eg BBC1
Feed 2. Interactive feed Splitscreen (Onboard, Timing Data and BBC1 feed)
Feed 3. Highlights

On race day, viewers will be able to choose from three different video streams.

These will be: (1)the main network feed with a choice of commentary from BBC One and BBC Radio 5 Live;(2) a split screen comprising the main network feed; an in-car camera feed and leaderboard; (3)rolling highlights.

If the optional screens are anything like the BBC News interactive screens they won't be worth using. The optional screens (different news stories) you can watch probably take up only about 3/10ths of the available space, with no option to go fullscreen. They're only useful for watching an item you really want to see. I couldn't sit and watch a race for any length of time on an inscreen of that size. Hopefully there'll be a fullscreen option on all of the feeds.

Actually it is possible, all the red button does is link you to one of their extra channels. It's normally channel 320 or something.

Sounds like F1 Digital to me - in which case people who never seen that coverage are in for one hell of a shock then.

Is it? The thing on the schedule page suggests only 3 channels - 1) main feed; 2) multiscreen - onboard; live timing and 3) highlights

If you are recording the FREEVIEW channel on seperate PVR, Yes.

However you can only record that feed on a SKY+ box, if you ACTUALLY WATCHING IT!! You cannot set the pre record function on SKY+ to those channels because they dont exist in the channel list!!!!!

Trust me, ive got one.

True. One thing I noticed from the details on the BBC page is no mention of Maurice Hamilton. Guessing he's been replaced on Five Live by Anthony Davidson?

Fancy opening a poll on when we expect the first complaints about the coverage come in? Because I reckon the honeymoon will be shorter than a very short short-thing from shortsville. It was almost over even before the last season ended because some got upset about the *possible* choice of commentator...

Being able to go full screen on the split screen channel will depend on how the BBC set up their feeds. To have the seperate windows available for full screen they have to be on seperate interactive channels (like SKY footy)

For freeview (limited to main + 2 interactive) it's probaly NO.
For Satelite it may be YES.

That's pretty much where I'm coming from on this too. It's great to have the choice, that it's free from ad breaks and that I don't need to go online to access more detail. I imagine that 90% of the time I will stick with the standard BBC1 feed. I doubt it will be complicated to use, having hopped through the BBC's coverage of things like Glastonbury enough times, but I think some televisions handle that better than others. Perhaps I will suddenly realise a whole new level of enjoyment of F1 after years of limited information... or maybe it will just make my poor brain hurt!

Having all sessions available to watch is good enough for me, even if I don't get many opportunities to do so. Recording practice sessions would be a waste for me as I can't really imagining having time to sit through them. A looped five minute highlights summary at the end of the first day would be plenty good enough for me.

Obviously this is looking a bit too far ahead right now, but I will be intrigued to see how they will deal with 2012 and the Olympics too.

I don't think with a Virgin+ box it's possible. I've been told it isn't possible on a Sky+ box either.

Not sure how this works on Sky or Freeview, but on Virgin there are no "extra" channels, you go into a menu driven system and if you try to record either nothing happens or you get a message advising you can't record the content for copyright reasons, such as with radio programmes.

If you know how though (with Virgin or otherwise) please advise, as I'd certainly like to record all practice sessions.

your right, you cant with a SKY+ box (dont about the virgin box) but you can get a cheap Freeview recorder for around £50 if you shop around.
Eg: http://www.inest.co.uk/products/Wharfedale..._-_80Gb_HDD.asp
I think something like that unit would allow to record both ch's 301 and 302 (BBCi channels)

you could try Ebay if you want a really cheap bargain.
