On the video I notice the only commentators you hear are those currently employed by the BBC or previously employed, ie no James Allen, they use ITV's commentary when it's Murray and Martin but switch back to 5live when Allen would have been commentating lol.gif
Chicken McNuggets
As an experience at least, I wouldn't say the BBC site is either inferior or superior to the ITV one. Whether the whole package will be vastly superior on its own terms, I doubt. Still, you can only judge what you've seen so far as well, and it looks fine to me. It's well designed, loads quickly, they've obliged with the archive videos and blogs, including that vote thing which an Autosport reader suggested if I recall, the trail looks fine and there are no pop-ups assaulting you every time you visit, so it all looks good to me. :\ **Shrugs** This thread is about the BBC's treatment of F1, not the racing, so I'm not sure personally why that has crept into the thread and how it's relevant to bring it up.

Everyone is about to clap in a minute (I hope). Read the following VERY carefully: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/20..._melbourne.html

Cant help think they copied the visual style from ITVs site http://www.itv-f1.com/home.aspx (which isnt an altogether bad thing).

Cant wait to see the F1 car chase, looks a big production!

jb has said that the Beeb will not be presenting from an on-site studio, but yeah you guessed it.... from the pitlane and paddock instead like what ITV have done for the past few years.

As someone who would have preferred a studio, I'm disappointed by this.

How the hell are they going to do the "Interactive Forum" after the race with them "flapping" around a load of paper trying to get things in order.... it'd just seem a lot more organised in a studio.

From one bad thing to another.... the old race "highlights" that they will show online will only be 5/6 minutes long. Disappointing.
philhitchings
to be honest the after race forum only needs a PC and a cupboard online. TV wise, I'd hope for something polished.

I take it that 'what done' means Mark Blundell is back too? eek.gifwink.gif

Reference the comments on here about the video trailer.

Do you realise what they were referencing in their video? It's not supposed to be purely an F1 video, it's
a parody of a very famous car chase in a very famous film.

If you realise that (and you're old enough to know and have watched the film, was recently on BBC2) you'll realise that it's quite funny and well made.

But then if you didn't know that and you thought it was supposed to be purely F1, I can see why you thought it was poor.

Can't they switch back to a London based studio for that bit?

That'd require different presenters; pundits etc.... all of it is being done on-site, nothing on London studio.

Hi all,

I'm responsible for the F1 coverage on the BBC Sport website, and I can address a couple of the points that you have raised here in response to Mark's blog.

1) The Chain - yes, the TV theme tune will be the iconic original version of this track, as used by the BBC previously. We feel it is inextricably linked with the BBC and F1, and still the perfect soundtrack for the sport.

2) The multi-screen option on the red button will only be available during the race.

3) Lewis Hamilton versus the rest - we will obviously be devoting significant coverage to Hamilton as he is a) the world champion and b) the leading British driver. But we feel it is extremely important that we enable you to get to know the rest of the drivers as well. So we will be devoting a lot of time to introducing them and revealing them as people. This applies to the teams as well. We want to give as broad and rounded coverage of F1 as we can. As our F1 presenter Jake Humphrey put it on his blog on Thursday: "I, and I know the team too, are firm believers that Lewis will be well covered by us as a defending British Champion...but it's so important for all the drivers to be in the public conscience...if you don't know who Lewis is battling against then the sport, for me, loses a huge part of it's drama...and many drivers have great stories to tell...we'll tell them all don't you worry."

ask him whether it will stay online after tho, as its streamed during.

would dmn clarify what makes him sad is that BBC will not have a lewisfest or that they will include him as just one of twenty drivers

Congratulations to Ross Brawn and as a Ferrari supporter I wish him all the best for 2009 but obviously well behind the red cars

I am not a Hamilton fan. If you read the bold bit above, I am sad/unhappy that onboard is not available for practice.

might be available on the website
MinT
Well burn me at the stake if you want but I for one am happy they are in the pit lane and not some studio miles away.

They will have the potential for better, immediate access that way and it adds way more atmosphere than 3 potatoes sat around on a couch waiting for the live race feed to kick in.

I also tend to agre with the Beeb on the interactive coverage - bet most of us dont use it much after the initial novelty has worn off.

for the love of god man practice is as boring as shite anyway so who cares, they're broadcasting the sessions so be happy because this never was the case. All the features are available during the race when it matters anyway.

Some people are never satisfied. rolleyes.gif

Give them a break. Seriously. You're getting free practice on TV, something we've never had before with ITV. And you're getting onboard channel during the race, something we've never had before with ITV. You're getting a package that people in Europe pay a subscription for. We can forgive them not going interactive during free practice.

Well sure, ITV isn't publicly funded like the BBC, and they've been losing advertising revenue for years. Not sure what ITV has to do with this anyway

My commnt looking back was a very big over-reaction on my half, and I apologise by it. Saying that, at least the Beeb listen to viewer feedback and at least we know there is a human at the other end with a sensible reply. I suspect the package we get at the end of the season to the package we get in Melbourne on the basis of viewer feedback and suggestions.

Or have no option to have it. Plus, online streams.
D.M.N.
Just a note on why Jonathan Legard is keeping a low profile as he has hardly recieved a mention during all the "hype", even Murray Walker's had more a mention. Legard, deliberately, wanted to keep a low profile before the season, possibly due to the bad press/reaction his predecessor got.

And for those that never picked up on this point in the Sports Editors blog by Ben Gallop (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/20...job_in_the.html)

"For the first few races, where the time difference means that we can have more red button streams, there will also be the chance to have the on-board camera feed full screen and a choice of television commentary, Radio 5 Live commentary or even a new CBBC commentary that is especially aimed at our younger audience. Details of this new commentary are not yet finalised, but we'll be able to tell you the details soon."

In case people hadn't noticed, they're showing some F1 stuff on BBCi at the moment (satellite stream 3). Earlier on they had Murray's "Five of the Best", at the moment it's a Hamilton interview. I expect it'll be on loop at least for today.

Murray Walker is the ideal CBBC F1 commentator. His childish OTT enthusiasm would be perfect to keep the junior audience interested, whilst intelligent adults can have proper F1 knowledge and analysis (hopefully!). clap.gif

It's the way they do it which is boring. 30 seconds of the same old clips that have been shown god knows how many times before on previous Murray Walker programs/videos/dvds.... Why not just show the whole damn race or at least show a decent half-hour or 50 minutes highlights or something... it's annoying just seeing a few seconds of a race, even if those were the key moments, it doesn't give you any of the excitement leading up to it...
And the rest was the same tedious Hamilton-obsessed nonsense we had on ITV - that Jake guy interviewing Lewis could just as easily have been Steve.

For a start off what they've put on the website so far is a very small collection of what they've got the "best moments" package was done to try and get people interested that are not exactly F1 maniac's; same with Hamilton. You make it sound like that the only interview on there was Hamilton.... I also see an interview with Christian Horner on the website; a small bit of what Nick Fry said at the FOTA conference; plus an interview with Kovalainen. That will only grow over the weeks.

BTW, the BBC's F1 TV advertising has began. At 20:18 on BBC One* a quick two second trailer aired. The first shot had the red stationary light, then a black screen came on saying "FORMULA 1 - 29.03.09" with the BBC Sport logo. The promo will "extend itself" I imagine over the coming days and weeks to reveal the full promo which is currently on the site. smile.gif

We are still 3 weeks away.... nice to see BBC already advertising on TV.

* = I live in the West Midlands region and therefore have BBC 1 Midlands. A Casualty and The Apprentice Comic Relief promo aired around it.wink.gif

Agreed. I fail to understand the silly obsession some people seem to have with this tune. confused.gif It was a pretty good theme music for Grand Prix and I don't mind if they bring it back or not, why do people care? :\

Going against the grain here, but the subtle remix that features in the 'F1's greatest hits' video on the BBC website was quite good. If they beefed it up a bit it would bring it into this millennium at least, though undoubtedly lead to a flood of complaints.

But hey ho, it's only a tune at the end of the day.
