SpeedTV = proper sports channel
BBC = available to everyone in UK. Bit of a difference.

Andrew Benson blog says that when he drew up the shortlist of Malaysia "classics" (99, 00, 06, 07, 08), he had to unfortunately omit 2002 and 2003 which he thought were great races due to 'technical problems'.

Now, the Australian selection didn't feature the 2003 grand prix, won by a Briton, David Coulthard (which was also a great race). So I am wondering if there are elements of the Beeb's archive contract that prohibits them from showing races in that early 2000s era? Maybe they only have an option for the past 3 years or so, and everything from 2000 backwards? But why seemingly omit 01, 02, 03, 04, and 05? Different contract smallprint (probably, knowing Bernie)?

I think in China's small GP history, the 2004 race was quite good, with a nail-biting finish between Rubens, Button and Kimi (arguably the 3 favourites for the win in China this year ;)), so it will be interesting to see if Benson includes this race in his choices or whether 'technical problems' prohibit him from doing so again.

I quote from here:

"On another subject, I know that a lot of you have expressed an interest in the 2002 Australian Grand Prix - and rightly so. The reason we did not choose that as one of our five options is that we have not got all the tapes from that race - some of them are missing. So we were unable to cut a satisfactory package.

We will, though, try to find them for next year - and bear in mind that one of the reasons we have asked you for your own suggestions is that we want to continue this idea into 2010, and your ideas for classic races will be added to ours to come up with a new shortlist for each event then."

So, they can't show what they can't find the tape for.

I would suspect any ITV broadcast race where Murray and Martin were commentating would be put up in an extended highlights form, however when it's Martin and James, it'd go back to BBC 5 Live. Again, I'm speculating here, they may just use the 5 Live commentary for all things 1997 to 2008... saying that on the Greatest Hits package here they clearly use ITV commentary from 1997 to 2001 clips.

SIS Live, the outside broadcast services company that worked with North One on ITV's Formula One coverage, will provide all technical facilities and support crew for BBC Sport's presentation coverage of this season's competition.

Formula One returns to the BBC for the first time in 13 years this weekend (28 and 29 March).

SIS will utilize some of last year's technical and production team for the coverage including staff that worked on F1 when it was last on the BBC in 1996.

Editing, RF cameras, on-site production office facilities and satellite links will all be provided as part of a package. The set-up will provide for main TV coverage, internet and interactive platforms with live coverage being made available on the BBC Sport website for the first time.

For the European rounds of the competition, SIS will field three vehicles: a combined production and editing OB unit; a dual antenna uplink; and a bespoke mobile production office. For all the international rounds, starting in Melbourne, Australia, a flight case packaged 'fly away' solution will be provided.

SIS Live managing director David Meynell said: "This is an important and prestigious contract for us. We will take care of all the technical planning, logistics and engineering for the coverage, enabling BBC Sport to focus on its production."

The BBC's Formula 1 presentation coverage for 2009 will be produced in-house by BBC Sport.

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/technology/n...soundscape.html

The Jungle Group's Toby Griffin, using Fairlight and Pro Logic, has devised a bespoke soundscape for the opening sequence to the BBC's F1 coverage, which starts this weekend.

The audio bed is based on effects from Pro Logic's Apple Loops - combined with heavy duty instrument plug-ins Massive, FM8 and Sculpture - that were manipulated to match the images and form the basis of the sound design.

This was then layered with effects from The Jungle Group's audiobase FX library.

The Car 'reveals' were enhanced with orchestral strings from Pro Logic and the FX library in order to provide a break from the intensity of the fast paced edits around them.

Directed by Julian Gibbs and produced by Richard Gort, the pre-titles sequence was created by combining CGI, classic film and subtle graphics. Louis Mellis wrote the script.

The BBC's F1 coverage starts this weekend on television, interactive and online.

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/technology/c...1_branding.html

New branding work done by Liquid TV for the BBC's coverage of the 2009 Formula One season.

Design company: Liquid TV

Client: BBC

Brief: To create a new brand that could out maneuver it's previous on-air years. It would need to invigorate, inject new zeal but also be instantly recognisable.

How it was done: Conceptualised by Tim Varlow, Asra Alikhan and Vic Martinez the brand is a fusion of all that embodies F1 and so throughout the teams and the cars appear to fuse and defuse with one another from the brooding intro to the explosive grit and tussle of the race. Gabriel Edwards combined specially shot Red camera footage with original CGI created in Maya extensively pre-visualising the animation and employing filmic constraints to evolve a credible race sequence.

Watch it: From 28 March on BBC1

Seriously, we're regurgitating industry press releases now?

Well fortunately soon we'll actually have something to talk about instead of writing fan-lit.

Surely that's the same with most threads around here?
Ross Stonefeld
At least those people are talking about what we're tuning in to see. You know, the racing?
stevvy1986
Are you the chairman of the 'Lets Slag The BBC Off and Be Miserably Negative About Them' Fanclub
Ross Stonefeld
No, I think the BBC are pretty much interchangeable with any other broadcaster, especially when it comes to sports coverage. The problem is they don't have an excuse, it's not like they have sponsors to keep happy.

I'm having a go at people like you and specifically DMN who are incapable of approaching this objectively. I'm just glad you guys don't have webcams when you're posting about the latest development of how wonderful someone's blog is.
stevvy1986
actually i'd question whether you're being objective-if its such a big issue to you that people are talking about the coverage, and you don't like that, don't read the thread-i'd have expected you to have worked that out by now............obviously not-people that don't like threads, don't read them........you obviously don't like this thread........so don't read it
Ross Stonefeld
Well I have to take the BBC coverage where I like it or not, so this thread is relevant to me. Unfortunately there's very little useful information when I visit. However I remain, as ever, an optimist that one of these days you guys will exceed my expectations.
stevvy1986
the only reason it seems to be not very useful to you is because you don't want it to be useful-you say you hope 1 day people will exceed your expectations............could say the same for you, maybe you'll learn that you don't have to try and slag people off as you've tried to do before, and that you are actually allowed to be positive about something, anything, to do with F1-if you don't consider whats posted in this thread to be useful to you, maybe you should just not comment, rather than trying to have a go at people from behind your monitor

What?

I have not once had my head up BBC's ass if that's what you're trying to say. I post on hear things that people have specifically said on other forums.

I do criticise the Beeb.... I have criticised the Beeb a bit, I'll probably end up criticising them more once the coverage really gets going, so please don't say that I am "incapable of approaching this objectively".

That's going a bit across the line of decency, Ross. There are people on these forums who deserve your scorn a lot more than DMN: try the Indycar thread, for a start! I personally am glad that someone took the effort to bring information here, no matter how small, and present it for those here to discuss if they wanted to.

This is, after all, a forum: by definition a place for people to gather and discuss things. If someone has some info they think is relevant to the discussion, then they have a right to present that info. They also have a right to express their opinions and, yes, be fanboys or haters ... as long as they stay within the forum rules. Those same rules that, I might add, gives them the right to participate on these forums without having scorn dumped on them regularly.

I received an email the other day offering me "live" coverage (via the Internet) of all this year's F1 races and NASCAR and Indy to boot - all for the pricely sum of $20, or thereabouts.

I'm currently at work so I can't tell you who is making this offer frown.gif

Does the offer sound legit?

I live in New Zealand.

I'm in exactly the same situation, BBC or nothing. I come to this thread looking for new info and all I find is some bloke calling himself 'Ross Stonefeld' slagging off the thread, the posters, the BBC, etc ad nauseam - 6 posts on this page alone and no info!

I think that sounds like a scam.

Has BBC had a season preview like ITV used to show each year preseason?

Eh? I don't understand why you are constantly being a grumpy old cock. This thread is about the BBC's coverage of F1. It's a valid discussion.
RacingMonk
Are we sure the red button practice live streams are on Ch302? I can only record one of them whilst tucked up in bed.

In fairness to Ross, he's been here for going on 10 years. That's alot of time spent wading through bullshit.

There hasn't been any yet: how does that justify over 2000 posts so far?
Ross Stonefeld
Well to be fair we have had a TV and radio trail, and some race highlights from the past 25 years.
Jackman
I've seen that trailer: it was rubbish.

Woo! On topic at last!
se7en_24
Bloody furriners ;)
Jackman
Dude, I'm paying for that shit. Well, technically my wife is as she pays the bills, but she thinks it's rubbish too. And she's stranieri as well.
Ross Stonefeld
The car chase trailer is indeed bad. I'm not sure the radio one is any better, some of the radio commentary seems like it was made up.
Snap Matt
It looked so very good to flick through the EPG on my television and see all the pratice sessions showing on the red button channels... I might even watch FP2 this weekend, which will potentially be the full extent of Friday practice I get to see this year until Brazil (Oh, and Silverstone but not on TV)! Nice to know it's available anyway.

Their new website looks as though it will carry a decent amount of content too, even if their Toyota Ten to Tackle feature only seems to mark your score out of nine...
Garagiste
I watched the red button classic races last night - Faaaantaastic!
Already way better than anything ITV offered as a build up - Trulli cooks pasta anybody?

I've got it on my computer and I've enjoyed what's worked.

It's nice to be able to watch these older races as a warm up.

i pressed the red button on bbc last night and only got like a teletext thing?
dank
I pressed the red button on my remote and it switched the TV off. What am I doing wrong? confused.gif
damon_hill_fan2007
depends what platform you are using...

Freeview you need to go to channel 302 i think

If you have sky, call up text on a bbc channel and go to page 3001 (this may also work for virgin etc but am not sure)
Hacklerf
Ah right ill try that, im on Sky HD

On the teletext thing there's a menu, scroll to the bottom and click okay for the highlights.
pRy
The red button feature isn't available on all TVs btw.. as far as I'm aware you need a digital signal to get it.. and that means either Sky, Cable or Freeview.

When you hit the red button (not the on/off switch!) you will get a menu that probably does look similar to teletext actually.. here is an example:

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii12/bu...t/RedButton.jpg

During the GP times I imagine there will be a "Formula One" option that you can navigate to and pick what you want to watch. On-board, whatever.

Alternatively there are ways to go direct to the different feeds, for example channel 301 and 302 on freeview take you direct to the two freeview BBC redbutton feeds. Sky I think have access to a few more.

lol.gif

That made me laugh. You're pressing the wrong button. If you have digital, the remote has four colour coded buttons. Press the "RED" one.
Crazy Ninja
For those with sky press either the text button or the red button when on a bbc channel. Both bring up the main menu. Then either type in 300 for the page number, or scroll down to sports multiscreen. Both ways bring up the main sports menu. The main option will take up most of the screen, then on the right hand side of the tv will be several smaller boxes. Classic Aus GP's were option 2 last time i checked.
