I am a fan of F1 and I dont know what it is.

Never heard of a driveshaft boot in my life before but at least i know what it is now smile.gif (Jus gotta find out what these driveshaft things are now lol.gif )

I thought it was slightly more embarrassing that she thought Clay Regazzoni last drove in f1 11 or 12 years ago.

But these are only minor details, the coverage overall was great + i must be almost the only person who wasnt so keen on Anthony Davidson. I actually enjoyed listening to the 2nd practive commentary more with Maurice Hamilton and Ian Phillips?

So what are the technical issues? 2001 would have been a good race to watch.

They didnt have the tapes and are trying to locate them for next season. Apparently.
stevvy1986
something along those lines apparently yup-don't know whether its down to FOM or ITV in terms of which races they even choose to give them (as for australia and malaysia some of the better races weren't available as choices for 'technical reasons' so if it is ITV, almost wondering if they'd say 'these races are true classics, you cant have them this year' or whatever)

Your not the only one, he irritated me too.

MH and IP were very good.

That's a matter of taste.

FWIW - I'm watching highlights of old races on the red button - and the old graphics with white/yellow/cyan are SO much more legible. I can not actually read the new stuff. So from my point of view - ignore how they look...I could read the old ones, I can't read the new ones.

The thing that annoys me more is the positioning. They are obviously set to be at the edge on 4:3 display, but on widescreen they almost appear to be in the middle of the screen.
man
The new graphics are shit.

I prefer seeing the drivers surname in full and in a size where I can read the damn thing.

Just seen this on YouTube which is the original BBC intro with the "F1" logo at the end at the bass line at the start before BernieVision (I think) ordered the logo to be removed from that and the website.

Yes that bugged me the whole race too. Surely most viewers are on widescreen now?

You can still see it though, those on 4:3 cannot see it at all if you set it up for WS.

The trouble is that on widescreen the graphic is 1/3 of the way across the screen, really in the way. If they positioned it to suit widescreen, at the edge, it wouldn't be so bad. Then if 4:3 viewers couldn't see it I don't think they'd care, as you say.

is it broadcast in widescreen or do the bbc just air it in 4:3?

It's broadcast in widescreen (at least that's how my TV sees it, if I force it to 4:3 it's distorted), but with the graphics positioned for 4:3.

It's an anamorphic broadcast, so the picture will fit the screen as required. The graphics are set in a position that will be correct for 4:3 ie at the edge, but is in the wrong position for widescreen.
KiwiF1
I can agree with the Widescreen TV problem, but it doesn't change the fact that the graphics, particularly for practice and qualifying give no real information other than who is in 1st and what time they did. You can't even tell who is on track.

I guess I will have to continue to be called a geek and sit and watch with my laptop and watch the livetiming as well.
Blythy
there are 2 world feeds

1 4:3 safe - the one the bbc uses.

the other....

KiwiF1
Do you have the full times on screen at all times, sure looks more insightful if so.

I'm happy, the BBC is back, so I can watch Oualifing and the race without advertisement-breaks, as we do have here in The Netherlands. Also I like the commentary of Martin Brundle.!

Mat

anyone wants to watch FP1 again http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport...one/7981020.stm I couldn't find the link anywhere on the bbc, found it on digitalspy - courtesy of dmn.

Watching FP1 this morning; it was interesting that Crofty and Davidson appeared to be commentating over the phone for the first 30 minutes or so. Very 70's!
Alfisti
Davidson was much better yesterday, slowed downa little and shortened things a little. The other fellow needs to shut up a little more often, he could talk under water.

You have to remember they are not commentating for the TV, they are the 5Live Sports Extra commentary fed over the TV pics, so what appears to be too much talking is just description for radio.

They still talk over him when he has something interesting to say, which annoys me slightly, and he hasn't yet developed the skill required to bring the flow of discussion back to his train of thought. However, other than that, he gives this particular pleb a clear understanding of what he's on about. Martin! I suggest you watch your back, AD gives great insight and although he talks a bit too much tech he is quick to realise and makes ammends well; provided the others let him provide his opinion.

Ted Kravitz, what was the point of him turning up in Melbourne, if all he did was talk for 30 seconds during the broadcast? I hope he has more to do this weekend.
stevvy1986
well, he was used a fair bit during FP1 (though i appreciate you may be talking in terms of during quali/race, in which case i do agree)

Yes, it was nice to hear during FP, but he needs to be more frequently used on raceday. Planet F1 suggested he informs the viewers of each car's fuel weights, or maybe writes a blog. Something extra to make him more well-known.

He did quite a few interviews for the interactive forum, also was used a lot in FP1 today with Lee taking over for FP2.
stevvy1986
He could do with being used more on race day i agree, perhaps a pre race feature comparing laptimes/weights and what it might mean in terms of strategy and the general pace of the cars etc? As when he was with ITV he seemed to be 'on the button' as it were when it came to strategy and such like

I would have thought he would be, after all last week was 'intro to new season and new channel week' wasn't it, features from nw on dn't have to be as introductory.
vicksplum
I really enjoyed the coverage. Of course there is room for improvement, but for a first race it wasn't half bad!

I think once Brundle and Leggard have worked together longer it'll get better. After all, poor Martin has had to "work" with James Allen for so long he probably didn't have a CLUE what it was like to work with someone who knew what was going in.

Could do without EJ though, if he wasn't arguing with DC he was turning everything around to be about him!

No way Brundle is threatened by AD, as soon as JB retires he's there I reakon.

Great coverage again today! And we are back with qualifying!
MichaelPM
up.gif Great interview with Whitmarsh by the BBC just now, really got in there with the "well Lewis lied so why not suspend him aswell?" and "surely he has a mind of his own?"

Would never get that with ITV.
