Bernie has to sign a paper for the equipment "Haftungserklärung" (disclaimer or something like that) for it to be cleared, but he doesn`t want to. The track officials could do it, but won`t because they don`t want to piss him off.

Can somebody please smack Greedy with a shovel?

The essence is:
German RTL didn`t use Bernie`s official logistics partner DHL to transport their stuff from KL to Shanghai but used a cheaper logistics firm.
Bernie is pissed off because of that and is now pressuring the local customs (via the track officials) to not give RTL their equipment, so they "confiscated" all of it.

What a dick head ...

I'm guessing all broadcasters i.e. BBC have to go through DHL.

Bernie = Moron.
engel
They 're lucky they didn't consume any non Bernie sanctioned food ... he 'd refuse them access to the toilets at the Grand prix venue. That would make for some very mad.gif Germans

Es ist alles verrückt :/

Seriously though, while I can understand why Bernie is pissed, this petulance is, well 'verrückt' (the German captures it so well I think). He gets the rate he does because he has deals with DHL a) they get to market themselves as the guys powering F1's logistics and b) because Bernie can negotiate for all the teams and commercial operators and in theory get a better deal that way.

Clearly he isn't getting the best deal, but if everyone went off and did a deal on their own, he would lose any real bargaining power with other suppliers.

Still, it's like everything involving Bernie, if it isn't costing him, he doesn't give a rats. Frankly, speaking of rats, I'm well past my limit with this rodent. He has done much, much good for the sport. But his actions in the last 5 years are starting to take away from that very positive legacy.

I think a lot of you are going to be very happy with the Chinese GP broadcast. Mike Gascoyne is substituting for Eddie Jordan this weekend.

Excellent! Actually that combination could work, very, very well.

So pleased that we won't have to endure EJ this weekend. Gascoyne will be a major improvement, and I enjoyed what he had to say when ITV were able to get his thoughts from the pit wall.

A lot of James Allen diatribe on here. Personally I thought he was an excellent commentator and was sorry to see him go.

But that's all the by the by. Move on.

The issue now is Jonathan Legard. And how the hell we can get rid of him for 2010.

He's dire. He can't commentate, he interrupts Martin, he doesn't notice things, he has no concept of F1 racing.

Let's look at Malaysian qualifying. His commentary can be broken down into three parts - say who is on the screen at the time, what their location is, and their position.

So we got "And here comes Button. He's coming around the final corner. He's crossing the line and he's first!"

And that was it. Over and over again he'd say "driver x is coming around coming around the final corner and he's 1st/2nd/3rd" like a bleedin horse race.

During the race we got a similar thing. He can only talk about who's on screen, where they are and their position. When he ventured into another subject e.g. how KERS works he got stuck and stumbled. Martin had to step in and rescue him.

Martin used to speak about 40% of the time but now it's jumped to at least 60% because Legard doesn't say anything about the race as a whole, or give us any background. He has to keep stepping in otherwise we get silence, but then something in Legard's mind sparks up and he can think of a way to fill the quiet. Except the moment's gone and Martin is still talking so he interrupts him.

I forgot one other thing - the weather. That's the only other part of his repertoire. In Australia we were told about the sun over and over, and in Malaysia is was the rain. YES I KNOW THERE COULD BE RAIN ON THE WAY. YOU'VE TOLD US 23 TIMES.

No chemistry with Martin, no panache, no insight, no background, no excitement. Just a boring bloke who commentates on what he sees at that particular moment.

Never mind all this 'give him a chance, let him settle in' rubbish. He's had 5+ hours already. If it took me more than 5 hours to decide if I liked somebody or not, I'd have a very hard job making friends.

I'm sure he's a nice guy who can commentate well if given the right sport (like football, horse racing or athletics), but my heart sank when I read he "always had a soft spot for F1" on his blog intro in the winter. He should be F1 through and through, not have a passing interest.

He's a generic, stiff upper lip, old school BBC commentator, with a staid voice and who is commentating on F1 just because he had a go at it once upon a time on radio. An F1 commentator should live and breathe F1, not give up after the last stint because he 'didn't like all the travelling'.

I really really hope Anthony Davison gets a full time drive in 2010 so they can put Croft and Brundle together on TV, and ship Legard back to radio.

The above post is spot on - says it all about Leg-end. Bring back JA for 2010 (or sooner please)!
stevvy1986
he misses too many things that happen on screen (eg alonso going off in malaysia) and everytime hes surprised by something (kubica/vettel in australia, or alonso in malaysia) he always starts his comment with 'ohhh' ie 'ohhh and thats vettel, oh and kubica as well'

Over at Andrew Benson's blog you can vote for your Classic Bahrain Grand Prix. Doesn't need a magician to work out that there have only been five Bahrain GP's so far, so voting is as pointless as it gets.

Luckily, Spain is next which should mean the return of the "Grand Prix extended highlights" programme. So, for Spain if you guys want extended highlights I suggest you choose a race pre-1997, I'm almost certain 1996 will be one of the choices for the Spanish races. smile.gif And if 1996 is the #1 choice, the Extended Highlights programme will be put online.

IF YOU ARE IN THE UK:

Is anyone else like me loving the extended coverage (i.e. practice) so much that so far this year they have watched every second of F1 action?

Luckily, I work from home so I even watch the practice on the other side of the world live while doing some work throughout the night, burning the midnight oil.

I plan to do it again tonight, no sleep for me!
SevenTwoSeven
Indeed, i occasionly watched the bits of pactice ITV gave us on their stuttering feed online but this is by far so much better. Really worth getting up for even if it means being knackerd at the end of the day!

may as well put that to 18:30 as most of the time when i turn over at 18:45 its already partway through
BrawnsBrain
Hooray! Where is Jordan, is he off blocking the access roads to Force India again?

Always enjoyed Gascoyne's insights from the pitwall in his Toyota days, and his general all round non-PC mentality.

Yep, he knows the technicalities of the sport better than most and can explain it it to everyone else.

Got to say... Crofty, Ant, my hat comes off to the guys. A great commentary double act. Just so professional and informative, but also funny.

And BBC... sign Mike Gascoyne up now. His insight so far today has been stunning. Great addition, and actually makes a nice triple act with Crofty and Ant.
BiH
Mike has really good explanations...BBC up.gif

I used to hear of people who turned down the TV commentary and listened to Radio 5 instead and wondered how they managed it. I have no radio near my TV and could not imagine watching a tv in one corner whilst listening to a radio some distance away.

Until now. Almost three races in and Croft and Davidson are leagues ahead. I've just watched the red button practice and wow! Brundle might have been the only good thing ITV had but he's nothing on Croft and Davidson.
toyotaf1
yer Gascoyne is great, when he was working for toyota he would alway do a rap up with the channel 10 crew here in Aus; so it great to hear him again, however i think his got more ambitious plan than just f1 commentator
Ross Stonefeld
Where are Croft and Davidson for FP2? Ian Phillips was interesting the first weekend, but "I don't know how to answer that, we don't have Widget X at Force India" and "We only have 5 people doing that, Toyota have 50" is becoming dull.
Mika Mika
No EJ this weekend!!!!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif clap.gif clap.gif clap.gif clap.gif

Hope it's permanent!!!

Just watching Classical Formula 1 on Red Button. clap.gif Great idea to provide a bit of a reminder of previous years races.

I also thought Mike Gascoyne provided a very useful insight into the technicalities of F1 even if I've never been that keen on him.
Imperial
Interesting (from Jake's blog) that EJ simply can't make this race. It was known in advance so it's not a last-minute day off for personal reasons.

Fingers crossed this is the BBC trying out somebody else in anticipation of replacing him if he continues to be as abysmal as he has been thus far. I have every faith in Gascoyne as he was always V interesting during his pitwall talks on ITV. Now all they need is replace DC with Ant and job done.
RodrigoL
Enjoyed the first session a lot, but the team in FP2 were simply below par:

Lee McKenzie - contributed absolutely nothing to the discussions; kept referring to all her marvelous experiences around the paddock and some mindless gossip talk..

Maurice Hamilton - conveniently drafted in just as Hamilton topped the previous session and continued the sort of biased comments he was making last year. Absolutely clueless at points, like when he refered to Chris Dyer as Massa's former engineer.

Force India guy - should focus on his own team's performance instead of criticising others.
craftverk
I really do not like Maurice Hamilton, he's exceedingly dull and seemed to not pay attention to what was happening on track.
dank
According to her latest Twitter update, Lee McKenzie's voice is going... Oh well.
RoutariEnjinu
I only like the Croft and Davidson FP commentary. They remind me of Radio Le Mans a bit.

guess given they have a few guys there they figure they may as well let everyone take part (otherwise why bother having them) though AD and DC are alot better than IP and MH
RedBaron
I find Anthony Davidson a little bitter, I thought this in a few ITV onscreen appearances too since he became a by stander. Maybe he isn't and that's how he just comes off.

So Maurice Hamilton, one of F1's most experienced pundits, is now considered clueless? eek.gif

Yeh I don't dislike him, just a feeling I get when I hear some of his comments and reactions. Like he is worthy while others aren't, I guess he could be right (assuming of course that he even thinks that) I just think it comes off a little bitter. Apart from that my only complaint? Is he ends some sentences that aren't questions as questions? Like some people tend to do? haha

If experience was all that mattered, why is James Allen, having spent 20 years covering the sport, out of a job??

In fact, it looks even more ridiculous when a pundit that is supposedly 'one of F1's most experienced' displays such a lack of knowledge for the sport he's covering.

The BBC should get rid of those staff present in FP2 and hire Charlie Webster... love.gif

I thought it was nice to hear Maurice Hamilton. In fact, he'd make a decent no.2 for Brundle. Legard is just cringeworthy. Please BBC get rid of him!!!! I'm almost tempted to listen to foreign commentary instead, even though I wouldn't understand a word of it. Someone give me a feed for Galvão Bueno please!
