I keep hearing Legard's running order countdowns in my head. Kind of like when you have a song stuck in your head but worse.

The order is Vettel, from Webber, from Button, from Barrichello... from from from. ---Then 3 minutes later--- So it's Vettel, to Webber, to Button, to Barrichello... to to to.

Legard can't even give the running order without being annoying. He brings absolutely nothing meaningful to the commentary and constantly drags Brundle down to his slow, uninformed, forced, awkward, dull level. His chemistry with Martin is getting worse which is quite amazing since there was none to begin with, and I believe it's becoming difficult for Martin to hide the unhappiness and exasperation in his voice.

IMO, for Brundle to shine he needs to be partnered with someone who has passion and knowledge that rivals his own, someone who is quick to spot things of relevance and doesn't ramble on and on about the obvious in broken sentences. In other words, Martin needs someone who is the opposite of Legard.

I've definitely noticed that too. When they show us the pictures of the two of them together in the commentary box Martin's body language is shouting out "I don't feel comfortable standing next to this fool". frown.gif I really think Legard realises that Brundle doesn't enjoy working with him and so neither of them are even making much attempt to 'gel' together anymore. They both just do their own piece and share the time slots.

I've just received a very thorough and grateful reply from BBC complaints dept. regarding my complaint about Legard.
They explained that all comments about presenters are logged on their system and so if they get a lot of people complaining about the same presenter they will definitely look into changing things. up.gif

Hey, I've just done something good!

Going through the track guide on the BBC Sport website, you can still only access the first 3 races.

However, typing it in the URL manually, and you can access the next 3 races!

- For the Sakhir, Bahrain circuit, click here
- For the Catalunya, Spain circuit, click here
- For the Monaco circuit, click here

I've also found the next "Big Picture"

Note: As it hasn't been put on "properly" it does load slower than usual and may not function properly, but everything seems OK. Time to see some new videos! cool.giftongue.gif

PS - The forum after the race, rocks!

This is what I like too. He's treating it like a sports program, rather than a soap opera. He definately seems to be putting the effort in. I love the forum afterwards too. Humphreys is excellent on it, and it's great having Brundle sitting down with them too on TV. He's not just there to make up the numbers and has excellent input, even after sayingly nearly everything he can during the race.

If the BBC switch-over is like the new regulations, then Humphreys would be my RBR. In the build up it to the start of the season was "meh" at best, and expecting him to be shit at worst.

In this analogy Brundle would be Brawn GP, rescued from the ashes of ITV.

Erm...Eddie Jordan would probably be Ferrari, in that he's initially failed somewhat compared to my expectations, but I think he has potential when he sinks in the groove, and when he gets his new diffuser.

What else what else. I'm going to squeeze maximum value from this analogy...

Remember I encouraged everyone to email BBC complaints and that they do indeed write back to you? See here their response (my complaint below it)

Dear Mr (name removed)

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the BBC One coverage of 'Formula One' broadcast on 19 April 2009.

I understand you're concerned because you feel Jonathan Legard's commentary is very poor quality and doesn't mix with Martin Brundle as you believe they both present as primary commentators. This you feel is off putting as you think it creates too many interruptions during the coverage.

We appreciate that commentators, such as Jonathan, can divide opinion amongst viewers and realise that they may not be to everyone's taste. However, they remain popular because of an extensive knowledge in the sport which is beneficial to our coverage.

All we can expect of them is a fair assessment based on that knowledge and experience. We do however employ different commentators, pundits and sports reporters to provide as wide a range of views as we can, and this may lead to interuptions and points being clarified.

Yet, I acknowledge you concerns, as you feel Jonathan's commentary makes him sound as if he's on the radio and you'd much prefer to have someone else such as James Allen or Damon Hill contribute so I'd like to assure you that I've registered all of your comments on our audience log. This is a daily report of audience feedback that's circulated to many BBC staff, including members of the BBC Executive Board, channel controllers and other senior managers.

The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about future programming and content and all feedback we receive, whether positive or negative, is always appreciated.

Finally, I've attached an invitation from the Head of Audience Services asking you to participate in our survey. We would welcome your views on the service you have received.

Thank you again for contacting us.

I believe you have made a mistake in choosing Jonathan Legard to commentate alongside Martin Brundle.

Legard commentates like a radio commentator, pointing out the obvious that the radio listener cannot see. He is not adapting well to TV.

But more than that, he is a "no.1" style commentator. You simply cannot mix Brundle and Legard. They will always conflict - even without Legard consistently interrupting Brundle.

I sincerely hope that you are not trying to persist with Legard, I feel that his forte is radio and that radio listeners would be better served by his return too - they are getting a disservice at this moment as well.

I would advise that you bring back James Allen, I believe that he is a good compliment to Brundle. Failing that, bring on someone technical like Davidson or an ex-driver like Damon Hill.

Although Brundle himself is an ex-driver and started commentating as a no.2 alongside Murray Walker, he is long evolved into a no.1 style commentator and putting Legard alongside him was a grave error.

BBC would do best to quickly fix this error rather than try to persist with what is an unrecoverable problem.

Now this is a stock reply of sorts but it's not totally automated. Someone still had to go ahead and make the reply and check it before it went back out. No doubt it took them at least 5 minutes.

So if many of you who don't like Legard actually made a complaint then they would notice the volume of complaints, if nothing else.

A 1000??? Last time I looked at rolf's petition (sadly now removed from his sig), there were about 80 signatures, 10 of which were promoting porn, 1 from James Allen himself, and about 10 from F1 pundits and drivers; and the authenticity of those in the last category looked a bit suspect if you ask me.

Reply from Aunty Beeb

Dear Mr P

Thank you for your e-mail regarding our coverage of the 'Formula One'.

I was happy to read that you enjoy the majority of our commentators, however I also understand you're unhappy with Jonathan Legard as our lead commentator and you feel Anthony Davidson and Martin Brundle would do a better job together.

I'm sorry to read you feel Jonathan's commentary isn't suitable for the Formula One. Please be assured he's an experienced F1 commentator who has covered the sport on BBC Radio 5 Live for approximately eight years, and therefore he's very experienced with a long-standing knowledge of the sport. We believe that Jonathan has strong editorial integrity, but we need to bear in mind that our F1 coverage has only recently started and so far we're very happy with how it went.

I'd like to take the time to thank you for contacting us with your feedback which is highly valued by the team in BBC Sport, and we're confident that we can keep improving the coverage as the season goes on. In the meantime I've ensured to register your complaint on our audience log, an internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily and is available for viewing by all our staff, including all presenters and commentators, programme makers, commissioning editors and also their senior management. The log is seen as an important document which can help shape future programming and content and ensures your points, along with all other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the BBC One coverage of 'Formula One' broadcast on 19 April 2009.

I'm happy to read that you enjoying our coverage of the sport but I understand you're concerned because you feel Jonathan Legard's commentary is very poor quality.

I'm sorry if you don't like Jonathan's presenting style. We're aware of the wide range of tastes held by our audience. As all our choices are subjective, it's inevitable that some viewers won't approve of some of our choices of presenters.

Jonathan was hired strictly on the basis of his talent, experience and competency to do the job. However, we know it can take audiences some time to get used to a particular individual's presenting style.

Nevertheless, we're guided by viewer feedback and to this end I'd like to assure you that I've registered your complaint on our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily for 'Formula One' team and also their senior management.

It ensures that your points are circulated and considered across the BBC. The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about future programming.

I Had to take some action, I complained to the BBC! lol

My complaint,

'First, congratulations of your excellent coverage of F1 this year, it has improved upon the ITV/north one coverage in just about every respect, apart from the role of lead commentator. I find Jonathan Legard to be very dull, he does not convey the excitement and drama of F1 whatsoever, he also seems to have only a basic knowledge of the sport.
In short he is a very weak link in a very strong chain, please bring back James Allen from ITV, or at least replace him with David Croft, Ted Kravitz or even Anthony Davidson.
Thanks for reading'

I think the reply from BBC complaints is quite on the money in one regard.

It does take time for a viewer to get used to a commentator's style.

And to my ear Legard already sounds so much more natural than James Allen ever did.

One other point, all this talk of Brundle somehow wanting to walk because he doesn't like working with Legard is complete garbage.

As if Brundle would walk away from his job, and his F1 broadcasting career in a move that would be sure to embarrass the BBC.

In fact, when has Brundle even made such rash emotive decisions? Exactly.

To be honest I think the BBC will pay lip service to the hardcore anoraks (that's us) and only move to axe Legard should the great masses start to complain.

The BBC's stated objective is to help grow F1 and increase audience numbers.

They're after the casual fan. They know us addicts are already a captive audience.

And to the mainstream I think Legard would be quite alright. He sounds much like the football commentators many are used to.

Maybe, maybe not. But the BBC is a public sector organisation. I know, through painful experience, that while public sector organisations may appear to move very slowly, the bureaucracy ensures that complaints definitely do not get paid mere lip service.

I can assure you in briefings, and particularly in lunch time conversations there will be remarks about complaints.

I don't think we should expect someone like James to be back on air anytime soon, nor Jordan to be given a shove. But in the time between seasons, there will be consideration given.

Correct. The audience, in some cases have gone up by double since the F1 started compared to last year (i.e. the Australian GP Qualifying rating [inc. re-run] was 58% higher this year compared to last) :

James Allen would definitely be no better. At first I didn't mind Legard simply because he wasn't Allen. Legards tendency to split sentances into several small statements is very annoying - it's almost as though he really doesnt know what he's going to say and changes his mind after he's said something. However Allen was much more annoying imo. At least at the moment I can enjoy a Brit winning races, which I really couldnt with Allen.

Legard should at least be given this season to improve. If he hasnt by the end of the season then it'd be fair cop if someone else was given a go.

Going back to Allen definitely isn't the answer, he had his shot and he was crap.
y2cragie
To be honest, as much as I am not a fan of Legard I'm finding it easier and easier to tune him out. You need to just refresh that thing in the brain that you all thought you could get rid of when you heard James Allen was going ;)
The one person I think should be chased off is Eddie Jordan. I gather he was brought in to be a sort of catalyst to DC and create tension and excitement in the pre race build up. That failed. What they got was a guy who not only wants to promote himself for the whole 60 minutes but also thinks its his job to take over Jake Humphries role. Personally I think they could drop him and not replace him at all. Jake is doing a fantastic job, mainly for the fact he's grown more naturally into the role he's been doing from show to show. DC has also improved fromt he statue that he was on the first show. He just needs to be a little more relaxed when trying to ask questions. I still dont agree with him being on the grid walks, I hope that was a one time only deal because as I said earlier it ruined the whole flow and live tv feel of it.

I think that waiting for the european races is the best for a true indication of audience numbers because the later start times will have accounted a large amount in terms of who was watching.

Probably been asked already, but no interviews with any of the retired drivers again this weekend? I know Goodman's manner left a lot to be desired, but it would be interesting once in a while if they threw down to Lee McKenzie or even Ted Kravitz to speak to some of the drivers.
