Dear Mr Jeremiah

Thanks for your e-mail about our coverage of 'Formula One: the Bahrain Grand Prix'.

I understand that you feel that Jonathan Legard is a poor commentator who's getting worse instead of better. We've received a spate of complaints from a few people of late, some of whom (rather pathetically in my opinion) appear to be emailing in repeatedly.

We appreciate that commentators can divide opinion amongst viewers and realise that they may not be to everyone's taste. We ask that you allow Jonathan a short period in which to settle in before going for the jugular; it's not an easy job as I'm sure you appreciate, even if your predecessor was James Allen!

It's in the nature of commentating and punditry that contributors are expected to provide their personal view on the action and events surrounding the sport they're watching. The range of tastes and opinions held by our audience is so diverse that it's inevitable some viewers will dislike or disapprove of certain presenters. We'd hoped to circumvent these complaints by providing multiple commentary streams, but it appears a very small number remain unhappy.

I appreciate your feedback about our Formula One coverage and I do acknowledge your disappointment with Jonathan Legard, your comment will be added to the audience logs with the rest of the dross not giving Jonathan a proper chance to settle in.

Please don't write to us again, we get the message, you've been moaning since before the first race of the season.

Regards

Orin, is this for real?
kar
Is that genuine, that is very, very, very poor form if it is and that there is definitely something that should be escalated into a formal complaint against the respondent.

I'm shocked actually. I don't know how many people have sent in multiple emails, and if they have, they are muppets, but that doesn't whatsoever justify that sort of response to what appears to be genuine feedback.

It would be worth following up on that Orin. Definitely.

*Edit* I just read that all the way through, that is clearly Orin taking the piss. smile.gif

Very clever, enough to fool me and have Kar calling for a commission of inquiry!

You certainly hit the nail on the head with this:

We appreciate that commentators can divide opinion amongst viewers and realise that they may not be to everyone's taste. We ask that you allow Jonathan a short period in which to settle in before going for the jugular; it's not an easy job as I'm sure you appreciate, even if your predecessor was James Allen!

I think a lot of the BBC's problems would be solved if it took a more ballsy approach to its critics.

For instance, the Jonathan Ross / Russell Brand scandal last year?

The day of the offence? Two complaints.

The week after it was publicised by a Sunday newspaper? 30,000!
The July Plot
Has anyone looked at JA twitter page, he was doing Twitter commentary for the race on sunday!....Yes that is slightly funny!.....But it show that JA has a real passion for F1, he loves the sport, can you imagine Leg End doing the same if he was sacked by the BBC, because I cant.
JA even done his driver of the day bit, I could almost hear is voice saying "So Martin driver of the day?"

And yet, his Twitter updates are often much more insightful than most of what Legard manages to spew out on race day. But I'd rather it was kept that way, Allen writing and Legard er, trying to commentate.

The BBC should have some balls and stand by their man.

They should do what your faux complaint reply suggests and say: "Legard is new in the job. We're standing by him as he finds his feet. Your complaint, and that of others has been noted. We'll review his performance in November. Not before."

I have no respect for James Allen the commentator, but a lot of respect for him as a journalist.

Some of the bile thrown at Legard in this thread is uncalled for, even if you think he can't do the job he's been called a twat in this thread for no reason whatsoever. I may call Allen 'the cock' from time to time but in no way do I mean it in the same way as some of the vitriol poured on Legard by some in this thread.

So what you're saying is it's okay for you to pour scorn or vitriol on someone you don't like, but not for others to do that?

Or not spend £6m per annum on someone whose abilities extend to leaving obscene messages on answerphones in the first place. But these are the people who, when forced by charter to playlist material on Radio 1 that's British, new, challenging and unlikely to be heard elsewhere, playlisted Miley Cyrus.

And her brother.

Did I say that?

No stop twisting my words, 'the cock' became a universally known nickname but as I said earlier in my post I respect him a lot so for me it's just a joke, there is no malice behind it.

I didn't twist anything: I simply asked you a question. Although I do think you're being disingenuous when you suggest that people calling Legard a twat are being vitriolic (which they are) but you calling Allen a cock isn't.

Maybe they will suggest that they are just saying it as a joke, too. What's good for the goose, etc.

£18m contract over 3 years. 18,000,000 / 3 = 6,000,000. Ergo I deduce from said factors that the BBC are paying Jonathan Ross £6m per annum.

As it says, Mr Ross is a uniquely talented broadcaster. Nobody has EVER thought of making prank phone calls before. I am so glad the BBC is spending licence money on such ground-breaking achievements.
MrAerodynamicist
The constant reference to Ross' six million a year is bit disingenuous. That £6m is not a take-home wage. Rather it's a contract to his production company, and out of out of that comes the not insignificant costs of producing his radio show, talk show and Film 20XX. He might be overpaid, but not quite to the tune that the headline number suggests.
ensign14
Whichever way it's carved out, it's an increase on £530k p.a.

Ah sorry, my fault. Hadn't read your post properly and didn't realise it was about Ross, thought you were referring to Legard.

JR is certainly a unique something, but I'd probably be banned if I wrote what I really think that is.

Did anyone have any problems with the 5Live commentary during qualifying and the race? I losed commentary about a quarter of the way through each, and it didn't return until about a quarter of each event was remaining. During the cutout it automatically reverted to the BBC commentary.

I heard there had been some difficulties, but when I downloaded the race commentary I got David and Ant all the way through. Weird.

Waiting for a reply from the BBC about this. They seemed unaware of it from their first email and wanted me to submit more details.

I for one have used it (two or three times I think) in the middle a sentence just to describe him, probably in reaction to an overreaction to Legard, as opposed to the quotes I have read in this thread where an entire paragraph has been constructed purely from the words 'Legard is a twat' (possibly paraphrasing).

I would imagine she got it off the iPlayer.

Jake pointed out during the forum that all the broadcasters were having connection troubles over the weekend. 5live was lost during FP2 while I was listening as well.

You can watch the GP re-run and listen to 5live at the same time in seperate windows, then you just "mute" the commentary team that you don't want to listen to

The piece he wrote in Motorsport recently about breaking the story on Damon Hill's sacking from Williams was an awesome example of ballsy journalism.

Am I the only one looking at and reading Jake's diary and thinking, where are Legard and Jordan?
I know Eddie gets a mention but theres no sign at all of Legard. I cant help but think maybe the guy likes to Isolate himself from the team and perhaps thats affecting his chemistry with Martin. That or its possible he was always busy at the times of the photos.

Legard isn't one of the experts used in the post race stuff as opposed to Martin who is, so Martin is far more likely to be in the pics than Legard.

I've pushed for several weeks in comments on Digital Spy Forums and asked in BBC blogs about Senna documentaries, so I'm very happy to see this:

Yes! Me pushing to get the Senna documentary on has succeeded!!!

Incidentally, the film was made by Mark Wilkin, the current BBC F1 editor.
