Hmm maybe they put Legard in there to simply make Martin look good lol..and it's working!

I get the feeling they don't have a great working relationship ........

David Coulthard has stepped back into the role as the reserve driver for Red Bull's two Formula One teams.

With the energy drink outfits' former reserve Jaime Alguersuari moving into the full time Toro Rosso seat this weekend and beyond, his predecessor Brendon Hartley has opted instead to focus on his racing pursuits in F3 and the Renault World Series.

Before Hartley was granted a FIA superlicence earlier this season, Coulthard fulfilled the reserve role, and the 38-year-old Scot confirmed in Budapest on Friday that he is once again on standby for the Red Bull teams.

Coulthard, who retired last year after nearly 250 Grand Prix and 13 wins, already travels to each race as a team consultant and commentator for British television and was in action for the team last weekend in Moscow.

I hope he doesn't get drafted in, because that'd mean it'd just be Jake and EJ. frown.gif Unless they have someone on standby in such situations.

Don't the beeb usually upload both full practice sessions on to their website? ohwell.gif

From Jake's Twitter:

"Hmmm...wonder who will be doing the grid walk with Martin on Sunday...;-) Just watched VT's for tomorrow. Make sure you're with us at 12.10. about 3 hours ago from web"

Jake doing the grid alongside Martin should be good (unless he's on about someone else?)

Also, for those that are still watching Inside F1:
- there is a Mark Webber special, next Friday @ 18:30 on BBC News
- starting with Alex Zanardi, a special feature will air on Inside F1 from Valencia wondering "Where Are They Now?"

17 weeks in one year = 32.7%
Say a weekend is Thursday to Monday by the time you arrive and leave, 5 x 52 = 260 days a year.

We only hear him during the show, but there is a lot of stuff outside the show - it does take time to fly believe it or not.

Gee I wish I could be as hard-working as Brundle. Yes, taking time off from a job that lasts 17 weeks a years IS lazy.

Anyone up for a drinking game? One shot every time Leggard says Webber's name in qualifying. Half a shot for each time he says "then".

We're all gonna get plastered.

Yeah that's what I've been looking for the past ten minutes. It seems to be available via the red button (on virgin media anyway), but nothing on the web.

I'd love to watch it now but unfortunately I've got jobs to do. If anyone finds a link please post so I can watch it later smile.gif

Cheers.

Two fingers* for "pushing on", one finger for cutting across Martin, and a half a pint for each time DC dismisses EJ with a sly grin. Full pint for "ME! ME! ME!" from EJ smile.gif

I'm pissed already and I haven't started yet!

So both you and Ross fail to realise that he does run at least two other businesses, besides his job commentating on F1.

That's not really BBC's problem is it. i can't wander upsatairs to the boss and say "yeah i need to leave at 3 each day to run my business".

I'll get a "Right **** off then" in about 4 seconds.

The BBC suggested he took his holiday in the three week break, seeing as Hungary is early this year.

Face it, you know just as much as anyone else who's read F1 Racing. No more, no less.

I've always suspected that Martin has/had a timeshare villa and the Hungarian GP was during his two weeks smile.gif

If you have 2 jobs already and a TV company come to you and say "We want you to be on our show, what are your terms?" then its absolutely fine to request a summer break. I was always amazed that ITV accepted that condition. It's not like there aren't lots of 2-3 week in the F1 summer schedule thus leading to my timeshare theory. (in the crazy world of my imagination he paid too much for it in the 80s after being conned by a Gordon Gekkoesque 80's guy and has resolutely gone and used it for every day he can every year to make sure he gets his damn money's worth!)

Are you on some kind of illegal substance?

When I used to have a proper job, I worked so much that I never took any of my holiday entitlement. In my company, it rolled over, so by the time I took early retirement I received a cheque for almost a whole years salary in lieu of holiday. When I wanted to go to GP's, I could never go Thursday-Monday. I had to go on Friday night after work and be back on Sunday night or, the worst, straight from the airport to my desk on Monday morning.

So I know what it's like to work and not have time for a holiday. I'm really not sure what you're finding so hilarious. Every job I've ever had came with some sort of holiday entitlement. I'm sure Brundle's is/was no different.
Ross Stonefeld
But in some jobs you don't take holiday when you have seasonal work. The journalists take their holidays between races or more than likely during the off season. Brundle's in the same camp.

He said he wanted to spend the time with his family. His kids would have been on summer holidays during Hungary. And the weather is nicer in Spain in August than it is in January!

Plus schools don't like kids getting taken out of class during term time.

BBC Radio 4 News, 7.30 this morning, sports update, athletics, Tour de France and Liverpool's 'get-your-retaliation-in-first' footballer - and, of course no mention of MotoGP or F1. Nasty, dirty, antisocial motor sport.

Depends on what station you're listening to and how the British drivers are doing. I briefly heard a report about how Hamilton was fastest in practice. Expect those reports to increase if he qualifies on the front-row.

It's because "F1 Practice" isn't worthy of a top three headline. Qualifying probably will though.

I don't expect, or even particularly want, a blow-by-blow account, but these are events that the BBC is transmitting later, a sentence about each event would not have been out of place. They are, after all, World Class sporting events. I realise that may grate with those who see F1 only as Big Business...
Andy35
Just like Ron Dennis I'm not the sharpest knife in the box; I was listening to who I thought was Anthony Davidson during free practice and he didn't sound quite right but I just put it down to a dose of Swine flue making him sound a bit odd....

As for Brundle, he must have kids at school or does not care for this race because he's always on his hols at this time. My own theory is that his missus caught him once with a Hungarian honey (and we all know how good looking they can be don't we lads , eh eh :nudge nudge wink wink: ) and he daren't go back or his wife will refuse to do his sandwiches to take to work.

I really liked Johnny Herbert, great backup for Anthony up.gif

Problem is next year when and if Davidson goes back to F1, and Herbert might go to BTCC, I wonder who they'd replace them with.

Anyone ever thought the BBC's F1 opening sequence featuring The Chain is actually a wry adaptation of Sylvester Stallone's classic racing film Driven?

It was Radio 4, you can blame that particular channel. Radio 1 had it as their first sports news piece during newsbeat afterwards and 5live of course covered it extensively.

That Henry Surtees VT by Martin Brundle was woefully short.

Couldn't they have worked in some interviews from people who knew Henry?
Ross Stonefeld
I think they gave it about as much attention as it deserved. To try to elevate him to be more than he was is professionally disrespectful and personally in bad taste.

Exactly what I came in here to say. I'm glad they mentioned him, but even if they'd asked the F1 drivers to say something. And for the first time ever, Martin sounded like he was reading from a script.

To cut to a VT suggests we are going to see a complete story.

What we saw felt a bit underdone in my opinion.

One SOT would have done it.

And Brundle's tone sounded totally wrong.
Ross Stonefeld
Maybe there's an extended version for tomorrow.
potmotr
I'm liking this karting piece though.

Makes me misty eyed for my days as a little racer!

But how awesome are the set ups the kids in this piece are using?

Talk about rich parents! I wonder how much Red Bull is tipping into that youngster..
wewantourdarbyback
I was surprised they even covered it. Nothing against Henry or the Surtees family but he wasn't on F1's radar and was only covered because of his name and nationality. It is a sad thing but to elevate his status wouldn't be fair on those who have not died n the last few weeks and those who have but haven't got a mention.
pacificquay
Editorially, for an F1 programme they gave the Henry Surtees story exactly the right treatment I thought.
potmotr
I think any fatality in motor racing is highly unusual these days.

I follow F2 and had seen Surtees racing for Carlin at Donington last year so guess my interest is a bit higher.

I just thought if they were going to bother at all they should have done it properly, not a 45 second VT with no interviews.

On the other hand, this Jarno Trulli charity piece has been going on... and on.. and on.

That earthquake was certainly tragic, but it was months and months ago.

I have to agree. It wouldn't have been mentioned at all if not for the name you have to admit if you are brutally honest.

Anyone else in that race and nothing would have been said.

Regards

Andy

Wonder why the BBC have only just shown the Trulli earthquake feature as it was filmed months ago? Similarly, the go karting article has been on the BBC F1 site for a while now.
