He should be staying at Five Live if they keep the tender (USP Content) to run the coverage at it is up for renewal at the end of the season.

On a very interesting note, there will be a commentator or two for Support races, but nobody knows who it will be. It is one of the few remaining secrets of the coverage.

All I really want is the option of no commentary. Since the demise of F1 Digital I have been paying a lot of money just to avoid ads and commentary; when viewed together with live timing, this is the closest to being at the circuit experience.

Have you tried turning the volume down? roflmao.gif

What about Mrs Allen?
D.M.N.
Mr. Kravitz has something interesting to say about DC (slight hint) :

http://www.itv-f1.com/Feature.aspx?Type=Ted_Kravitz&id=44141

"Which brings us to David Coulthard’s performance. It seems pointless to criticise a man who’s only got three more races to go in his F1 career, but since he may well be dishing plenty of criticism out to others next year, I’ll start now: he was mediocre in Singapore."

I personally don't mind him. He's passionate and that's the most important thing in a commentator.

I'd rather have JA than someone who helps you to sleep.

One thinks one should start seeking for UK stable anonymous proxies as of now! wink.gif

One would thank any help one could get from other abroad BBers... biggrin.gif

One moment recently where I've wanted to hit Allen with a Spade:

Hamilton overtaking DC at Singapore.

Brundle: "He had him lined up and had to make the move"

Allen: "FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANTASTIC MOVE BY LEWIS HAMILTON! WHAT AN OVERTAKE! DRIVE OF A CHAMPION!"

For anyone who hasn't heard Jonathan Legard:

I'm pretty sure most will compare him to JA straight away. I think opinions going to be divided on him. I'm willing to give him a chance though.

It was difficult at first when he started commentating, but I'm used to him now and don't particularly mind him.

But whoever replaced Murray was always going to have their work cut out.

Thanks for the links. Yes, sounds no better than JA IMO, more empty-headed if anything. But maybe radio commentary is harder than TV.

How they didn't get Toby Moody I can't understand, that's on a par with turning down the Beatles.

I have listened to legard for many years when I couldn't watch the race, he is far better than Allen IMO and has become an even better commentator since he switched to Football and Tennis on the radio, we shall see how he handles television commentry but I would imagine he handles it better than JA and even David Croft who is a great radio commentator but commentates on television like its the radio as he describes everything.

I hope the Sliver Fox gets it!
I think Damon did a good job standing in for Martin Brundle this year.
I think two ex racing drivers would be much better, especially as they used to race against each other.

I hope the BBC are a bit less biased towards Hamilton, we don't need that pussy cat dolly ramming down our throats!
Budvar
I thought the deal was done already. Coulthard has replaced Ted Kravitz, Brundle stays on, Jonathan Legard replaces Cock Allen. Someone called Lee McKenzie takes over Louise Goodmans role (tits and bangles).
Bob Nomates
WHAT? Louise has been sacked?
I hope not, i enjoy watching her trying to get off with the drivers. Shes very slutty, the BBC need her!
Budvar
Yes, Louise will be heading off to the wilderness that is a press job with Honda. At least Jenson will still be getting his kiss.gif
craftverk
None of what Budvar has said has been confirmed by the BBC, just to let you know.

I'd like Ben Edwards along with Brundle to commentate. Dream commentating team imo. As long as we get good commentators, I don't care about anything else.

And regarding bias towards Lewis... he is a British driver, what the heck do you expect? ITV aren't even that bad, to be honest. If anything, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) will be even more behind Lewis than ITV, if their olympic coverage is any indicator. And like I keep saying, if you want real bias, go to Spain. rolleyes.gif

Given that the Olympics pits nation against nation, it's natural that broadcasters will take a keen interest in their country's affairs.

Look at MotoGP - there's a very slight bias towards James Toseland, as there used to be with Shane Byrne and James Ellison beforehand, but only slight. There is a very even handed approach to the coverage.
Bob Nomates
Gutted about Louise! Don't think she can be replaced!

I think that the BBC will be more professional than ITV, and drop the Hamilton bias. They have to remember that it's going out all over the world. I want british divers to do well but ITV are making me dislike him.

Does anyone know if we will get the old theme tune back too? I like that fleetwood mac theme tune, so much better than all that arty farty ITV stuff, it just gets weirder by the week. What's that eagle all about?

A "very slight bias" you've gotta be kidding, JT can do no wrong and if he makes a mistake the beeb blames other riders.
Look at this vid (@25sec) where Suzi Perry tells what she'll do if James wins, no bias lmao.

2 ex drivers would be a bad idea in my books,we need 1 ex driver to give their opinions n such like from a drivers standpoint, and a proper commentator to try and get us excited and do the whole 'and its go in australia!' type stuff (that was a bad example but you get the idea)

I meant the coverage. To be honest, I tend to watch Eurosport now anyway so it might be worse now than I recall!
le chat noir
can we have some picture in picture or red button to be able to watch the stewards office during and after the race? that's where any decisive action takes place nowadays. it would be interesting to watch the reactions to on track incidents and such. another one of the press room could also be good. and wherever max is, well that might have to be broadcast post-watershed, so maybe just a audio link to his phone.

eugh, Eurosports coverage of the MotoGP is just horrible to watch. One driver gets anything wrong and the jump on it, and then he's the worst driver on the grid for the next 5 mins, there voices seem to be in monotone most of the time. Give me Charlie and Steve any day.

UPDATE! SOME BAD NEWS. frown.gif DISPUTES, DISPUTES, AND MORE DISPUTES.

Not a good update guys.... on the commentary side.

*The only good thing is James Allen will NOT have anything to do with this, so please do NOT throw his name in the frame based on the below....

From the information from ariusuk and jb26 on Digital Spy:
*No more interactive info known.
*Original announcement regarding personnel expected at Italian Grand Prix weekend, that date passed without announcement.
*May NOT be in a position to do a dress rehearsal at Brazil as expected (see earlier posts in this thread and 1st Thread).
*Big problems concerning the first choice for lead commentator. According to ariusuk, the lead commentator is refusing to accept the financial packages being offered to him and won't sign a contract without more money on offer.
*There is also a problem with the second-choice commentator. A personnel who the BBC have signed has a long running dispute with the second-choice commentator and is refusing to work with him. The personnel has it written in the contract that he will NOT work with the second-choice commentator.
*Then of course BBC have to tell the others that they weren't "what they were looking for"....

Any more info, and I'll post it.....

P.S. Don't ask for names because I don't know. IF I find out, I'll post them.....

2nd P.S. Of course if you want Martin Brundle and Ben Edwards as commentators, then you may interpret this as good news. tongue.gif
Ross Stonefeld
I think you guys need to stop treating this as breaking news. The commentary and coverage aren't going to change the way we watch F1 and I think all of you will be very very letdown when it's all unveiled.

Finally managed to have a quick chat with my contact. Couldnt add much more than has already said here, but did say the intention is to have a 45-60 post race program after the normal GP coverage has finished on the interactive channels. All races are to be on BBC1, but some Q's might be on BBC2, said it is playing havoc with the normal schedules (Eastenders etc.). Still seems to be a lot of negotiating going on about what they will(will be allowed) to show on the interactive side.

Too right up.gif

As for the latest 'news', all I can translate from that is that everything is still entirely up in the air and no one knows anything for certain.

I'll be perfectly happy if the Beeb show all races and qualifying live, commentated on by someone with a genuine passion for the sport and not some overly politically correct BBC buffoon who'd rather watch golf. Any extra stuff I'll get off the internet no worries.
COUGAR508
These days I usually watch F1 with the TV sound turned down, and tune in to the BBC Radio commentary, where Maurice Hamilton is always good value. The new BBC TV team may persuade me to turn the volume up again next year!

I agree with you but I suspect from a schedulers point of view it makes it even more important to be consistent with the airing time of these programmes.
kar
I get a feeling that once the reality of having to actually get something done sets in we're going to end up with all the sorts of compromises ITV had to made.

Still, no James Allen, no Mark Blundell, no Louise Goodman and no Ted Kravitz, and especially no ad-breaks, even if everything else stayed the same that is a giant step forwards.

Well, if you dont like the BBC's chioce of commentators, you can watch it on the BBC, turn the sound down and tune into the BBC radio commentary, with James Allen lol.gif
The July Plot
David Croft said something during his commentary that I thought was a bit of a give away, I cant remember exactly what he said bit it was words to the effect of: Maurice Hamilton said something about getting people to tune into the TV, and Croft corrected him saying surely you mean the radio?, Croft then said something about well not until next year anyway and you will have to press that red button.

I took this to mean that he would be doing commentary for 5 Live and it would be available as an alternative audio stream through bbci.

Sorry I cant remember exactly, but I hope you get the jist of what I mean.

In my opinion, as long as Ben Edwards gets the job, you are very wrong.

Edwards can make the dullest series on earth seem like the best thing since sliced bread. He'd work some magic on F1, especially the duller races. His CART commentary still ranks as the best commentary I have ever heard. It really does make a big difference.

All these people waiting for the interactive channels in the hope that there'll be a 'trackside only' audio option have presumably never been to a race (without the aid of a Kangaroo). They'll be in for a surprise when they realise just how little you actually realise is going on without the aid of commentary. Probably not quite as bad as being trackside, but having had bad trackside lack-of-nearby-PA experiences I can assure people that just because you can see a lot of cars in front of you doesn't mean you have any idea what's going on!
wewantourdarbyback
You see while I like Ben his commentary on the BTCC leaves a lot to be desired, while a lot of it is the atrocious editing from ITV meaning he misses bits, he can get overexcited and at times witter on or repeat himself.

Having said that his Eurosport F1 commentary on youtube is good
