Currently Britain has been going through a nice little heat-wave smile.gif

However, at my end (Midlands) things are begining to turn a little sour. Winds have picked up, clouds are rolling in, and rain should be with us within 30hours imo...

I reckon we will see rain on either the Friday or the Saturday, but Sunday should be perfect weather for a days racing. mid-to-high 20's ... biggrin.gif

I'm still wary of the update. It could all go horribly wrong, too. It took Mercedes backwards this weekend (whether it was due to the cars being more difficult to set up or not maximizing the full potential), it's risky business. I hope to be pleasantly surprised, though.
OwenC93
Well the new diffusor means longer breaking distances, but you can get on the power earlier, which should compliment our F-Duct.

Mercedes went backwards for two reasons, tyres and the fact that they had to alter bodywork due to the heating problems of the new system.

As for Mclaren, yes it could go horribly wrong, but if us armchair expects are correct, then they did use winter testing for a number of validation tests. We all saw the birdcages back in action, persumably to validate and correlate wind tunnel and cfd data.

Other than a front wing which didnt perfom as expected, every update so far has. I fully expect the diffuser to be no different smile.gif
undersquare
They're going to do a straight line test, so if they take it to Silverstone at all it must work, to one extent or another.

Plus they must have put it through CFD, water flow testing, windtunnel, simulator. No way to know of course but odds on to deliver I reckon smile.gif .

Anyone know when the straight line test is?

QUOTE (argiriano @ Jun 29 2010, 11:19) *
It didn`t work that way. You can`t translate the speed trough very different circuits. Valancia has just 2 fast corners in last S3. Silverstone is like having 4 times T8 at Turkey in just one lap. Do you remember how fast RBR was trough T8? McLaren need this upgrade. We just got to have faith, it will work as predicted, straight out of the box.

Not true at all.

Anyway I hope its warm in Silverstone so "the 25" could get the maximum use from the tires.

Nope...

But I imagine they'd want a completely dry day. Also, with enough time before the GP so that they can tweak the final designs a bit.

Man. I teared up a bit when Lewis said "This is the actual car HE drove during a race."

You could see the reverence & the respect. It makes you realize just how much heritage McLaren has, And how lucky both drivers are to be in the position they are in. Amazing stuff.

I think it was Kubica that said he has to brake for longer but he can put the power down earlier with the new blown diffusor.

Sounds credible to me. Gain when the exhaust is blowing, lose a bit of efficiency when it's not. Same principle with the blown rear wing, it loses a bit of d/f in non-blown mode.

Given that the non-blown diffuser is developed to the nth degree for d/f efficiency, any change is bound to have a cost.

They didnt do all that testing of the testing methods back in .... er testing ...earlier this year for nothing. It was precisely for this kind of situation so I dont have 100% confidence but I am at about 85% that they will make it work as planned.

Hey I was one of the advocates of the preseason testing being measurements rather than trouble or a slow car lol.gif. Just that this concept is slightly dangerous, seeing that we already have so many different variations with our exhaust. I hope it works.

I read that during this series of Top Gear to mark Ayrton's 50th Birthday there is some footage of Lewis driving the MP4/4 which should be particularly special.

Just remembered - was in The Sunday Times in their Top Gear special with executive producer Andy Wilman.

QUOTE
Another film I’m looking forward to is a piece we’ve done marking Ayrton Senna’s 50th birthday. Again, there’s depth in that topic, but I wouldn’t use the word “serious”; I’d use “emotional” and “exciting” — particularly when Lewis Hamilton gets to drive, just for our cameras, Senna’s 1988 McLaren. Hamilton worships Senna, it’s been his lifelong dream to drive a Senna car and when he hits the track it’ll have the hairs dancing on the back of your neck.

I absolutely cannot wait for that.

Really nice video, liked how they got the Vodaphone aspect into it without making it a blatant advertisement. Awesome banter between the two drivers.

A Question if a McLaren expert fan can tell me, what is the reason for the replacement of Marlboro on all of the cars, I initially thought it was done for that video, then I had another look and all Marlboro sponsored cars had the same treatment.

It is good. I just caught up with it, it's all my favourite things, Lewis, Senna, McLaren. I would suspect the removal of Marlboro is to do with political correctness and a desire not to be seen promoting or endorsing smoking in any way, and rightly so if you ask me. That and a desire not to promote a certain rival teams main sponsor!

I had to have another look, there is one shot at around 1:20-30 where you see a wing with the letters RO, when they take the shot from behind Lewis you see that car and a few others with the cigarette packet shape still on them with no writing on the rear side of the wing. So I suspect there are still a couple in there, but looking at the rest of the cars it would appear they go through a program to be painted for storage and I suppose display purposes. Interesting, well to me anyway.

Great stuff indeed, thanks for posting. Unbelievable driving from Button and Kubica, I wouldn't havr thought that stuff on the bridge was possible (without crashing). Webber really did badly here; he just got swallowed up by the field in those first few corners.
