Jenson Button: "Obviously, my non-finish in Spa wasn't ideal for my championship aspirations, so I head to Monza next weekend determined to put myself back in the hunt for the title.

"Our pace over the whole weekend in Belgium was extremely encouraging - we're developing the car at a very rapid rate, and we're learning more about it all the time, so I'm optimistic that we'll be able to maintain that form in Italy next weekend.

"We still have some work to do to make sure the package we bring to Italy is perfectly suited to the track, but I'm confident that our engineers have made some good steps forward with their understanding of our car, so we should be in good shape.

"I love racing at Monza – it's a totally unique experience; running minimal downforce at incredible speeds along the straights, and then coping with the lack of grip, and an extremely skittish car, through the low-speed stuff. Given the competitiveness at the front of the field, this could be an intense, thrilling grand prix."

Lewis Hamilton: "Our victory in Belgium showed that, as a team, we never give up, and that we'll always bounce back from adversity feeling stronger and more determined than before. This team has such an incredible fighting spirit – we strive to win, and I hope that Spa is only the start of a run of stronger form for us as we head into the final races of the championship.

"I've made no secret of my wish to win this race. Monza is an incredible circuit – full of history and stories from the past. It has a special feeling in the air that you don't find anywhere else in the world. It's a circuit that inspires you to race at your limit, and I'll be pushing hard all weekend.

"Finally, I'm looking forward to meeting the Italian fans this weekend. I pretty much grew up racing karts in Italy, so I've always appreciated and understood the passion and support of the fans for Formula 1, and motorsport in general.

"Even if it's not always obvious, I know that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes does have a deep pocket of support in Italy. So I hope the whole team can have another great race at one of the classic tracks in Formula 1."

Martin Whitmarsh - Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes: "Even though, on paper, the Monza circuit's characteristics appear to suit our package, developing a car that performs well on one of the most unique venues on the Formula 1 calendar is no easy job.

"The low-downforce, extreme high-speed nature of Monza demands its own bespoke aero package – and getting that downforce level correct is not as straightforward as it seems. We require a complex number of mechanical and aerodynamic variables to work harmoniously if we are to provide both Jenson and Lewis with front-running machinery this weekend.

"Obviously, Lewis's victory at Spa was perfectly timed, and has substantially motivated the entire workforce ahead of these closing races. After Jenson's unfortunate failure to finish in Belgium, we are determined to reignite his championship push next weekend to get him back into the hunt for the drivers' title.

"It's no secret that there's a tremendous amount of fight in this team – and I'm proud of every single person's efforts to provide us with a winning edge. We know how to win races and world championships, and, clearly, we will once again be pushing for victory this weekend."

Why did the McLs sound like WWII fighter planes at Spa? That exhaust note was like nothing I've ever heard before. Are there ideas about on what might cause that kind of sound?

Dusted off the Merlin then

eoin that's a good point, but at Spa the cars loiter around the 17-18k RPM for a longer period of time. I guess due to the high speeds at Spa the car will receive adequate cooling. I recall at Monaco it was said that the slow speed behind the safety car with the bung still installed in Jenson's sidepod, is what caused his retirement.

The bung was only in when he left the paddock to get to the grid, it was not still there once the race started. The damage to the engine was already done, but it might have lasted longer had they not had the SC.

My understanging is that the bung was there after the start. JB or a team member mentioned that they had planned to remove it at the pitstop. They said the car would have been fine, had there not been slow running behind the safety car.

Nope - it was in for the sighting lap, then taken out - and would have been ok but the SC slowed them all down so much that they couldnt clear the heat out.

No. It was removed, wasn't there after the start, pictures showed.

I see, thanks. Do you have a link to any articles? I could have sworn I read something about a pitstop.

I'm sure it was just the parade lap, I remember it was Ted Kravitz who told the team it was still in. Then obviously they whisked it out on the grid, too late though.

I think they've change the colour now? To something contrasting...

giiive uppp your wrong lol it wasnt. Go back and watch the race. I have a rough idea what the rear wing of the 25 will look like, but..i have no clue how the front wing will look, any ideas anyone wants to throw at me? I think I remember last year they kept basically the same wing? I used to love the Monza race pre 2009 cos the cars all looked so different for that one race. The 2007 McLarens were amazing. The wings on that thing looked superb.

I'm not disagreeing with what has been said, infact I stand corrected. This is not about being right or wrong, I just want to understand where the pitstop comment originated from. Perhaps it wasn't a team member afterall, but from a commentator or reporter, said in error.

I'm pretty sure it as never removed, but they said the car probably could've made it if it wasn't for the SC.

Sorry, but you think that despite the team being told the bung was still in when he left the pits, you think they still had not taken it out by the time the race started.

Yep, parade/warm-up/formation lap. Unlucky about the immediate safety car. Though also it could be said it saved Jenson's blushes as I doubt better than 10th was on the cards if he'd been able to do the race.

who knows where he would have ended up, but 11th to 6th was only 6 seconds apart so he could?ve made some places

I seem to remember that the garage TV remote control was erroneously left in the car (thrown out by Button) and the side pod 'bung' (which was to be removed at the first pit stop) was also left in the car which led to the engine overheating due to the SC.

This is what I recall also. What other have mentioned does make sense about it being removed before the race, however just like you I distinctly recall at the time that someone mentioned something about a pitstop in relation to the issue.

The ventilator part was taken out and its holder bung part was left in, Jenson left the garage with this. (The team noticed the problem soon after, but there's a rule, the driver isn't allowed to stop the car on the road to the grid.) Jenson had to go until the grid. This bung was removed on the grid before the warm-up lap and the start. They started to cool the engine, but its massive heat is very hard and time consuming to 'remove' by ventilators. Jenson started the race with an overheated engine which needed proper air cooling of high speed, which was deferred by the SC.

Maybe the talk was about the engine cooling would have been OK (without SC intervention) by the first pit stop?

I wonder if we will see any rear wing at all lol.

I think that now 70% of rear downforce is the diffuser (I don't know exactly, but alot) then the only way to shed drag is have a flat rear wing.

I mean look at what looks to be the Lotus Monza spec rear wing, on a car where the diffuser can't be that good.

As much as top speed is important at Monza, it's also braking and stability on the brakes that's just as important... That's what made Toro Rosso the quickest car in 2008 and has made McLaren good most of the last ten years...

Force India will be very good though, Sutil was excellent last year...
