QUOTE (Burai @ Nov 5 2009, 10:00)

Paffett is a difficult one to pin down.
He left the DTM originally as champion to sign on as McLaren tester with the intention of going to Jean Alesi's McLaren B-team to get F1 experience but when that got shut down and Hamilton proved such a star in GP2 he was left in limbo.
To be honest, I think his chance is gone now. The other Merc teams don't really need him as they don't work as McLaren feeders. But he's doing alright for himself really - He could do a lot worse than McLaren third driver and a works Mercedes DTM drive. Plus all it takes is for Lewis or Kimi to get injured and he's suddenly back in the game.
He's certainly one of those characters, like an Ollie Gavin or a Vincenzo Sospiri, where they do really well on the way up and get so close they can taste it, but we're left to wonder what might have been.
Ah yes that's right he won the DTM championship in a Merc while Alesi and Frentzen trolled around as backmarkers.

Give Ant a drive!

Anthony Davidson? He is most certainly not a rookie.
I don't follow the youth programs, so do anyone have a good list of contenders from Mclaren or Mercedes youth programs? GP2?

The two Mclaren MP25/winter threads have been merged and tidied up.
There is a generic winter thread and there are threads specifically for the other cars/teams, keep your discussions in the relevant threads.
If you do not own the copyright to a pic (you took it) or have written permission to use it rather post the link.
If you have an issue with moderation PM the responsible mod or use the "! REPORT" button, do not take it to the forums.
Thank you for unlocking this topic.

That would be great if it turns out that way. I assumed Di-Resta would get some kind of Force India gig. The kid is class. I hope we don't hear one of those horror stories about how his driving style has been wrecked by exposure to those Merc tin-tops. If that is the case then I guess he wasn't class in the first place. However personally I think he should at least be retained by McLaren with the MP4-25 as part of one of the 'young driver' test day concepts that are being put forward.

This year we saw Red Bull re-introduce a pull rod rear suspension, a design which hadn't been seen in F1 for 20+ years? It would be interesting to know what types of designs posters would like to see, as well as those they envision may appear on cars in 2010. I would love to see a single exhaust system perhaps even combined with the floor to form a blow diffuser like the 2000 McLaren had. The blow diffuser despite creating more downforce, causes aero imbalances when the throttle is modulated rapidly. The pull rod suspension has deficiencies Red Bull clearly overcame, perhaps the same can be done with the blow diffuser.
Couple of tweets from the Fifth Driver:
"First test of 2010 is in early Feb, yes. However, first of all there's a Young Driver test at Jerez in early December..."
"F1 moves fast: wandered past the carbon shop and the guys are all busy working on MP4-25! Impressive, eh?"

I don't expect pull rod rear suspension on the 25. The mechanical concept of the 24 was very good, race wins (Hungary, Singapore) and 'almost' wins (Valencia, Abu Dhabi) proved it, so I expect the continuity of it.
Hot air outlet in the middle of the engine cover a la RBR might appear, though the already traditional asymmetric exhaust system will be kept, but I guess the 25 will have a tighter rear end.
However, first of all there's a Young Driver test at Jerez in early December...Probably December 1-3

I can't wait for the MP4-25. There's a lot of talk of everyone going or the Red Bull route but this year is the First Iteration of the rules, so I suspect McLaren and Ferrari will come through with very individual designs because they now know every area where they can claw back downforce. There will obviously be a few Newey inspired bits and bobs, but IMO with an extra years experience the guys back at Woking will come up with an very individual design.

I'm not sure, the excluding the MP4-24 the other cars have being a evolution of Neweys designs. The 1st was the Mp4-24, which had flaws, the MP4-25 will hopefully be able to set the record straight.

Yeah but I've always wondered how Newey couldn't achieve the success McLaren achieved with 'his' design with the clean sheet of paper at Red Bull. IMO that suggests McLaren are amongst the best at developing a static set of Aero Regulations.

The other Merc teams don't really need him as they don't work as McLaren feeders.
I think Force India does, to an extent. Remember, they have a broader technical partnership with McLaren beyond engine supply from Mercedes. While he's not a driver, Simon Roberts did a year as Chief Operating Officer at Force India in what appears to have been a loan role, and he's returning to McLaren next year. As a further indicator of how close the two teams are getting, MW attended the announcement of Roberts' replacement, Otmar Szafnauer.
Force India may not be the feeder team for McLaren now, but I could see it developing into such. There were rumblings that DLR would get a drive with Force India last year, but they elected to stay with Fisi. There have also been rumblings about Sutil being in the picture for the McLaren drive.
If McLaren sign up another young driver soon, don't be surprised to see him at Force India for a year or two.
