Hi Gents,

I love these threads going in 3 different directions. smile.gif

It's really very simple. Two-Strokes fire every time around. Four strokes fire EVERY OTHER time. It takes a 4 stroke of TWICE the displacement to equal that of an Two-Stroke (powerwise). Forget about the fact that the Two-Stroke (of half the displacement) weights much less. Technical progress?

Start a 250cc (whatever displacement) WGP class.......NO ENGINE TYPE LIMIT. The winner will be on a Two-Stroke. wink.gif

yes all very sad, i still think of it as my sport going away from me, im sure the rule book says that no one can ride 2 classes in a day in moto gp. the 4 stroke mx bikes sound terrible, cant stick them. sound like a c90 with the exhaust gasket split. all set up now so that joe blogs can channel hop on sunday afternoon and come across the drivel that comes out of that cox/parrish duo, think that the stifled procession he is watching is amazing and be told that rossi is the best thing since ever! even though he has never seen a bike race before, then he will pass his test and get one of those superbike clone thingys and thats it, watch moto gp on the tv where the hoard of celebs that appear on the grid all seem to come out the same line like its drummed into them "always been into bikes" even though youve never seen them before or since. 2001 and 2002 were very diff years at donny, i never went back after 2002, very sad for me that honda won the last 500/250 championships, then lost rossi cause they wouldnt give him a certain bike. sorry to keep going on or if ive upset anyone but something has stopped, whether it be from the bikes or the characters that ride them? i am a die hard 2 stroke fan and obsessed with 500s, theres just less and less to get up for now on a sunday. you watch a bsb/ss/wsb bike live on track and no matter how fast it is, its still a road bike with the lights taken off it, do the same with a 125 rs honda or the like and you know its a race bike. there is a difference. they made the big mistake of letting wsb be a world championship, should never of happened in my eyes, should have been a world cup god im getting old and grumpy rolleyes.gif

I guess as i've never road raced i only have rights to a partial opinion LOL.. hats off to the guys that did and i enjoyed watching them, i still think motocross died when the factory bikes stopped being proper trick and being 2 stroke, so i know your sentiments entirely.

I agree that as a racer the chance to ride a RG or a TZ against the best is something you cant turn down , but at the end of the day the gap between private and factory kit was just getting too big, and the 250 grid was becoming a lesser class becuase of it.

And at the end of the day, the factories race to sell product, end of, and the closer it is to the guy on the streets bike , the better for them.

There is nothing better than a reverse cylinder TZ250, still in factory white, but as nice as it looks , if its 10 bhp down on the one next to it and no amount of money will get it there, it slants the racing in favour of the bike and not the rider.

Im hoping that the Moto2 class turns out to be a world class version of the Pro-Am series........ banging bars and riding like you stole it .. lol.gif

Hi Phil,
hows it going ?
Agree with your sentiments, always loved racing the two strokes, my RG MK7 was a great tool, just a bit of an eye opener after riding 1000cc four strokes for years !
Remember the first time i rode it down the industrial estate where i worked and thinking " how can a human ride this thing, its like a switch, nothing and then Oh my GOD as it stood up on the back wheel in 4th gear !" Once i realised it was all down to clutch control and keeping it in that tiny little powerband all was fine!
Was lucky enough for my sponsors to buy me a brand new reverse cylinder TZ250 in 1990 and then a V twin RS250.What great little bikes, completely vice free and made you carry so much corner speed that your riding improved ten fold !
Easy to work on, remember the TZ did a crank in first practice at a North Glos meeting, we had the crank changed before the first race and the engine cases were still warm when we had finished !
Like you i am looking forward to Moto2 and hope that it produces the sort of racing that Moto GP needs, will miss the 250`s though, they produced some of the best and closest racing of the last decade !
Happy days !

Just found this page (only page one) from the qualifying to the Swedish GP 1982 in my box of old stuff.
29 riders within 2.84 seconds, different bikes like Yamaha, MBA, Pernod, Kawasaki, Bartol, and Rotax powered bikes like Kobas, Armstrong and Nico Bakker.
Close racing different equipment, good old days (still looking forward to next season of moto GP though).

Cheers,
Leif wave.gif

Yes interesting that Leif, I seem to recall that at the last 250 race this year, William Dunlop was 6 secs slower than pole, possibly showing the need for change because of the haves & have nots! IMHO. (other regular 250 pilots 4 & 5 secs slower too, before some of you cry it was his first GP).

And they say the times are closer today? Mmmmm....................
Some really good names on the bottom half of that list. Dear me, how strong was that field then? Really impressive.
Anyone have any idea who won that one (without cheating now biggrin.gif ). The podium would be nice.
How did you fare in the race Leif? And what about our Jeff. Surprised to see him down there, but I suspect a bike that wouldn´t behave?

Hi,

1982 was a pretty good year for me, I really liked the Nico Bakker Rotax, I can’t find the result list from there, but I think I finished somewhere between 15th to 20th.
Mugello and Hockenheim that year were pretty good for me too, and in Brno the ignition stopped working during the race.
A few years ago I found the bike again, and I am slowly (very slowly) trying to get in running order, hopefully I will be ready for Spa next year.

This is how it looks now:

As you can see, still things to do, biggest thing will be to make new exhausts for it, that’s quite a big job ohwell.gif

Here is a pic of my old mba,the frame was built by Roland Broadbent a local guy to me in Oxford it was a beauty and a joy to ride, drunk.gif the swing arm was nickel plated, and the mono shock was from my old TZ 125,so if any of you guys no where it is I would love to get it back the frame was stamped on the headstock RJB 012. I sold it to a guy who i think was starting up collecting race machines Steve Griffiths. whoooops how do I post a pic in here confused.gif but this was my old machine that roland built for me

Well I shall miss the 250's, just as I miss the 50's the 80's the 350's the 500's the Sidecars!! How do they think that a road bike can take the place of a properly developed race bike. We had close racing in the 70's.............untill they either dropped or ruined all the decent european race tracks. We had 7 good races to watch in one afternoon, now were asked to pay £50 to see 3 races and load of marketing. I haven't been to a grand prix now for about 10 years, it's just not worth the effort or the money. And what happens when they eventually drop the 125's because no manufacturer is building 2 strokes anymore...........wonder what they'll replace that with ohwell.gif

Maybe it will be Moto3 using CBR125 motors in trick frames. They have a CBR125 series over here in France for the fledglings,so it could be a 'tryout`.I,m getting depressed thinking about life without 2 smokes.Time to uncork a bottle of 1€ Merlot to dull the pain!!!!!

I promise that I'm not being mischievous - what I wonder is the theory behind the steeply angled seat ? Late model TZ's too had a similar riding position Didn't it put a lot of unwanted extra weight on the arms, not to mention the ol' wedding tackle wedged against the tank?

And I've already had some drunk.gif Yes and whether you like the 2 strokes or not, it's just a different sound. One of my mates summed it up after a visit to this years TT. He said, you just wished there was a 2 stroke coming down the road, all the races looked the same and sounded the same ohwell.gif

Stops yer arse from sliding over the seat hump and off the back.

Now that WOULD be bad for the wedding tackle I reckon.

Damn powerful them stinkwheels were, Russell.

Gerry Mobey from the Marlboro series went to Italy with his dad and picked one up back in '86 and I never heard of him racing it ever. They were pretty expensive at the time as far as I can remember. Did they make these in Pesaro?

And getting the smell wafting over!!
I used to arrive really early at Brands/Snett before the bikes were allowed to start up, and then hearing them crackle into life, the hairs on the back of my neck used to stand up, and the smell drift across to Druids or Corams....luvverly!!! ambivalent.gif
