aka ... Fry and his marketing dummies, after mercilessly driving Honda into the ground (the earth), not being able to attract much more than a revolving door of local taxi firms and pizza spots to sponsor a championship crushing car, despite now having the return of an icon ... we still got too many blank spaces on the car ... let's strip the paint.

Why not just silver?

The legend goes that Mercedes built the ultimate racing car in time for the 1934 season, the W25. But there was just one small problem: the car was overweight by just one kilogram. At the time, the cars were racing in Germany's traditional racing colour of white, and Alfred Neubauer hit upon the idea of saving weight by removing all of the white paint, so the car ran in its unpainted raw silver bodywork. It's basically the origin story of how Mercedes came to be known as the Silver Arrows, though some people claim that this was just a story Neubauer liked to tell.

Get your facts right. I think Haug knows more than us.

When the car rolled out in 1934 it was white and Schumacher set the fastest time instantly. Maybe you should read the Mercedes GP History book, revised edition.

When the car rolled out in 1934, it was silver. Look at the photos. Mercedes themselves admit this.

I was joking, I said Schumacher drove the car in 1934. He's not that old.

Alongside Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg and prominent team figures, it is also expected that Mercedes-powered McLaren's team boss Martin Whitmarsh has travelled to Stuttgart for the event.

What this teaser tells us:

Drivers overal to be grey. Was hoping for black. ambivalent.gif
> Not white at least.

We have a first glimpse at the shade of silver chosen for the car. clap.gif
> Not chrome, darker than McLaren's. They went for a matte silver !!!

Wheel rims to feature petronas green outline. rolleyes.gif
> Expect more Petronas Green on the car...

Sad that McLaren are sucking up to Merc down.gif
feynman
i thought we'd just about nailed that silly story, and then Norbert re-animates it for a whole new generation ... cheers.

look we get it, we get it, it's awkward on the museum tour explaining that you followed Auto Union who had already abandoned white for silver as part of the new 1930s forward-looking 'progressive' regime, a regime subsequently a whole lot less fashionable ... but when the first Merc race in silver didn't have any weight limit, it kind of makes the whole proposition a much harder sell

... i appreciate that kind of urban mythology has an all-too willing audience, but please Mr Haug, let's not pander, i thought better of you, enough already.

I'd rather a turquoise car than another blue and white affair.

Yep, I do feel that the turquoise will ruin it too, we'll see...

What time does the car unveil start?
MadYarpen
damn, I should be learning and I'm waiting to see some paint on an old car. Kill me.
Owen
It will be silver (like an old school West McLaren silver) with turquoise as an accent colour sparingly used (as in the wheel rims). It will be heavily branded Petronas with a few Brawn hanger on sponsors.
Any dramatic deviation from that, and I will be in for a surprise.

Haug reckons there's going to be parts where the carbon fibre bodywork 'shows through', Of course, it won't actually be the carbon fibre, since the direction of the grain is often at odds with the lines of the car; the grain always goes in the direction that gives it the most rigidity. So if it's true - and I hope it is, since it sounds awesome - it'll be decals of the carbon fibre. I don't know how it would look; the closest thing I can think of is Ken Block's Impreza. If it were down to me, I'd probably have the carbon fibre 'show through' around the exhaust outlets and air intakes.

Did they even have color photos back then?

Anyways they probably scraped the paint right after they weighed the car in the factory. The fact is that before that car every mercedes was colored white and after it they started painting them silver

The wait is horrible!!! I like the shade of silver they're using. And, if the turqoise is used in moderation, it can look great IMHO.

Wenn Sie Deutsch verstehen, können Sie die Mercedes-Präsentation live im Internet ansehen:

http://motorsport.mercedes-benz.com/comingsoon/index.html

(Bis 11 Uhr smile.gif)

From 11am Central European Time or 10am UK time, Mercedes is streaming the launch. Not sure if it will be in English, but you can click on the above link apparently. Alternatively go to motorsport.mercedes-benz.com/ and it ought to be linked to from there.

Good use of their website I think :-)

Really excited for this all-German line-up, even if I have my doubts about Rosberg.
