The new Hot Rod magazine has a heads-up comparison between some milestone Ford and Chevy comparisons; they built the engines as close as possible within contraints to being identical as produced,(the same Holley was used on both engines, as searching for and tuning OEM carbs was beyond budget and time limits.)
The engines were the :
1965 327 L76 Chevy vs. the Ford Shelby 289.
The Ford showed 302 hp, and the larger Chevy 356 hp. They did put a FI system on the Chevy to see if there would be a diff. and it gave, just as advertised, exactly ten more hp.
1969 Boss 302 vs. Chevy DZ302
The Chevy produced 356hp vs. the Fords 372 hp. Oddly the Ford put out more torque down low, but the Chevy had more torque over-all
1970 Chevy LT-1 vs. Ford 351 Cobra Jet
The Ford won with 365 hp vs. Chevy's 353, but the magazine said that due to the way the engines were set-up, the Chevy would probably have won in a race as it produced more hp in higher rpms.
1971 Boss 351 vs. Chevy LT-1 (with 9 to 1 comp. ratio)
Ford 383 hp vs. Chevy 359 hp. Due to the better breathing of the '71 Chevt vs. the '70 (more room in the opened up chamber) the low comp. ratio Chevy produce greater hp than the high comp. ratio 1970 engine.
The magazine is worth buying just to read this VERY interesting article.

From a neutral folk'er those quotes seem biased.

All I can say for fact is read the article, but the Chevy was never known for excess horse power.
I am impressed how strong the '69 Z engine was; it was beast on the street but still a impressive engine.

Show of hands for all of those that have had enough of a Hot Rod Magazine infused horsepower debate?
Thought so.

It was not a debate, it was a article based on dynamometer results.
If you do not like this do not read it.
And so it goes.

If it can truly be said that there are , "liars, damned liars and statisticians"
then there must be separate category for dyno technicians!
Remember all those Fiats whose horses were outdragged by dog sleds at the local lights
