A truly great day for the WRC today, with Jean Todt announcing his dissatisfaction with the state of the WRC and his promise to turn things around. Many here have felt I have been outspoken in my views of the WRC, but it was born from frustration having listened to many people, both fans and people involved with rallying at a global level, who all agreed that the WRC was in dire trouble...and yet no one in the media was saying as such, for fear of the wraith of Simon Long and his band of cronies at ISC/NOS.

Therefore this 'myth' that the championship was in great shape was reported.....well...no longer.... up.gif

Some of the key points from the following article are:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81205

QUOTE
"But, we must be unsatisfied about the present situation." "A lot has to be improved. We must create a much bigger interest from the manufacturers, the privateers and the media. I am excited and I have the passion for this job."

I highlighted some of the key comments in my opinion as the one thing that many have forgotten is that it is the 'privateers' the 'amateur racers' as some here like to say...that are the very life blood of this sport...without them...this sport collapses and dies and therefore their opinion is as valid as anyones.

I am genuinely excited to see the comments from Jean, that taking the WRC in a more positive direction, was one of the primary reasons for taking the presidency.....this is superb news. I hope there will be sweeping management changes in charge of the championship... as the current brigade have shown a staggering incompetence and a refusal to recognise that what they were dong was in fact destroying the very core of what the WRC is all about. However in order for them to understand this...they need less 'TV Luvvies' who know nothing about the heritage of the sport and more input from people who truly understand what makes rallying truly great.

I have to confess to not being the greatest of supporters of Jean Todt in the past, but his announcements today have really surprised me and they truly are a blessing for the WRC... great stuff! Well done Mr Todt!

Onward and upward.

Well, he did say to Kaj during the rally (jokingly probably) that the car doesnt really "go". So I would strongly suspect he misses the raw power of an F1 car.
Lets hope Red Bull gives him a test later in the year to get him tempted a bit tongue.gif

It is still early to say at this point. Because the season in F1 isn't started yet.

They should ask him the same question after few rallies or through midseason.

Next time you watch a bus driver drive I am pretty sure you will notice he or she is being much smoother driving the car than the average person driving their own cars is. To drive like that can even be physically exhausting because you have to focus hard on the job. I can see I would be pretty stressed-up if I were a bus driver. Yeah so say them a few nice words next time you see them, their job is not as easy as it first could appear to be cat.gif

Very true, Anssi.

QUOTE (Anssi @ Feb 1 2010, 19:00) *
Yeah - so I think you can see why someone from that kind of country could be screaming in my car in the Winter that I have to slow down. Because, you know, this is what I was thinking when I wrote that into my story, that the person screaming doesn't know the tyres I have are very different to the tyres he or she uses in Britain. That's the point - perhaps many tourists miss that little fact when they come here and wonder how can we drive so fast in the Winter. The studded tyres make a huge difference. I would not drive my car for example today if it had Summer tyres on it - that would be insane. Of course the tyres don't turn Winter into Summer as my story above makes very clear but there is such a dramatic difference that if you are not aware of it then you might very well get upset about the speed we are travelling at in the snowy and icy roads. That was the point I had in mind there in my story.

I think it's possible to drive with summer tyres in most winter conditions if you don't expect too much from them and are not trying something impossible. If you are in city and have to stop constantly, it's not a good idea during winterstorm, you will easily get stuck and block the street. With bad tyres it's best to keep moving and avoid stopping. I'm sure most of us would be almost as hopeless in the snow as the brits, if we had as much traffic and summer tyres. The braking distance with summer tyres can easily be more 2 than times of winter tyres' distance, and that makes the critical difference whether you can start the car in uphill or not.
Anssi
I don't know where you live (Finland? It's OK if you don't want to say) and what is a Winter to you but in my opinion using Summer tyres in the Winter is extremely dangerous. Yeah it's possible but it's extremely stupid, too. I've seen some people do it and they were pretty much not getting anywhere and when they got moving they were sliding around a lot which is not a safe way to do it even if it's fun smile.gif I've also done it some time when I didn't have the tyres changed and we got snowing - had to go to work in the morning a few kilometres and even stopping one time at a traffic light can mean getting stuck, as you said, no stopping, but then again it's not always possible not to stop, sometimes you run out of space and time simply so you are forced to stop.

Sure, we have time in the Winter when the main roads are clear of ice and snow. You can very well use Summer tyres then. But it's too risky - what if you need to drive to a smaller road. Or what if the main road gets ice in like 5 minutes - what do you do. It's just way too risky so it's not worth it. Simply the weather is too unpredictable for Summer tyres to be used in the Winter. You can do it at one moment but then in the next moment it might be impossible... cat.gif Of course the rules we have are a compromise and don't fit every situation perfectly but I think it's a good compromise to always require the Winter tyres in the 3 months from certain kind of vehicles like passenger cars.

I drive mostly in the Helsinki region so basically I don't drive much on smaller roads which might get covered by thick ice or packed snow. On most days you could live with summer tyres here, but of course it's good to have proper winter tyres, it makes driving easier and faster, specially in the extreme days. The problem with the nordic winter tyres is however that they lack grip in the wet conditions, something which we in recent winters had a lot in this region. So I'm using euro winters which work well in -5..+5 and become more slippery when it gets colder.

I live in Southern Finland and visit Helsinki every week because of my job.

Visited yesterday also. I really don´t wonder that some people in Helsinki could try to manage through the winter with their summer tyres. It was heck of the weather yesterday..and still no change what so ever in style of driving. It was like some Wild West story.. eek.gif eek.gif eek.gif

Unbelieavable tossers. Little snow and they panic and drives like no direction sense at all. And they light up foglights if very little snowing.

BS. Helsinki is about the only place in Finland where people know how to drive in heavy traffic. Driving in Helsinki is a GP compared to a lonely rally special stage in rural areas.

Of course the grip is always much better on wet than ice, but relatively speaking wet is a clear weakness of the nordic winter tyres, particularly studless. If wet is your most usual winter condition, you would not like to give too much of that grip away.

Helsinki-Espoo-Vantaa has no heavy traffic. Stadi is very tiny city when compared to real world cities. And even in traffic local abo-originals seems to drive like idiots.

All is clearly not quite as 'rosy' as North One Sport continue to try and pump out....

Malcolm is spot on in his observations....

QUOTE
Ford team boss Malcolm Wilson said his M-Sport operation was in a similar position.
"We're doing studies and evaluations (into the new engine)," said Wilson. "We have to otherwise we won't be running in time for next January. Our target is September to have the engine up and running."

Which is exactly the point I have been trying to make that the 2011 timetable for a switch to 1600cc Turbo's is bloody madness, considering they simply do not yet have the manfacturer support to go to this new engine size next year. Yet another glorious decision by the band of halfwits at ISC/NOS. They are simply not giving other manufacturers time other than Mini, to get an engine properly ready for 2011.

Again...it is clear Jean Todt is at odd's with Neil Duncanson at NOS, where he states "Can you understand the frustration of the FIA and the frustration of the promoter that we only have two teams competing? I think people would rather have five teams than two and that's what we are trying to address."
Jean understands that the fans...the ones paying the money to watch the sport...and the competitors the ones paying the money to compete in the sport...want to see more manufacturers in the WRC, at least 5... as opposed to the 4 that Mr Duncanson is perfectly happy with.

Unless they can get another couple of manufacturers to commit to joining the WRC in 2011... and it seems the current promoters have until March to try and get that interest...otherwise I can see the 1600cc Turbo formula being pushed back at least a year, until more support can be gained and 2011 becomes fully S2000.

All in all...it has been handled terribly....but Jean Todt truly seems to be on the ball with this...and that truly is a great relief.

That was pretty cool. Just as I was saying a couple months ago: Kimi can go rally, make some cool videos that people actually WANT to watch, add to his reputation as one of the most talented drivers in history, and if he chooses, go back to F1 an even bigger star than when he left.

With the exception of Red Bull and perhaps Branson, most of the people in F1 don't seem to understand 21st century marketing methods!

Oh, and by the way, did anyone notice that Kimi probably said more in the interview above than he usually says in an entire F1 season? That puts to rest the myth that he has nothing to say.

Indeed. smile.gif

When the question is dumb, expect a dumb answer.
Avastrol
Kimi's interviews are usually a reflection of the interviewer. If the interviewer is a little man with an agenda ("Do you know how much a laborer earns in Italy or Finland?"), the interview will be shit.

Notably, he has good interviews with that Dutch guy. Asking him "what was the first car you've driven" seems to be the key to a good conversation.

Anyone want to take part in a WRC-related fantasy league online?

The people that run Fantasy Racers have launched 'Fantasy WRC' and you have a selective budget which you can buy drivers before each rally and accumulate points based on their performance.

The website is here.

There is also an 'Atlas F1' league set up. League number is 90001.

I would also add that the person running it has said that the roster of drivers was pulled from the Class A drivers from the Swedish Rally and will be updated before each and every rally, so Ken Block fans etc. needn't worry.

Early weather update for Sweden: more than enough snow has fallen over the entire country this winter, and the forecast for Hagfors over the coming week says no snowfall and subzero temperatures all the way, so right now it looks like very good snow rally conditions, with generous snowbanks and hopefully no fresh fluff for the front guys to battle through. And the shovel and my back get to rest for a week, fingers crossed...

You need only a few drivers to break the fluent rythm of traffic and make them all crawling. I mean people who cannot accelerate while joining highway, and then they change lanes or brake, causing a chain reaction of everyone crawling at that point for the next hours. Then there is the other end, who think they are good drivers but fail to read the weather, hit barriers when it becomes slippery, and again whole traffic is crawling on limited lanes drunk.gif

This is what Ken Block said about Chris..

QUOTE
"We really tried to work out some deals to get him in the team this year. I really like Chris, he's a really good guy and an amazing driver, but unfortunately the deals didn't come together how we wanted. We're looking to have him come out possibly for an event or two this year - we're not really sure when or where - and then looking to have him in the team for 2011. But that's all up to sponsors and what my agents can do with putting some deals together. We want the team to feature multiple drivers over the years, and Chris is someone I like and respect so we're looking to try and have him as part of the team."
