Eek, I didn't know that, Peter. John Wood was as hard as nails, and a wildly-underrated racer. I seem to recall he was a contemporary of John Woodley, may have even had the same RNZAF Woodbourne origin : but after finding his way in NZ, he was a main man in the feast of 350 action that took place several times a year at Oran Park. When I was living in Sydney, and writing occasionally for NZMCN, Dave Jones the Oran Park manager at the time couldn't have been more accommodating, and so for a couple of years I was privy to some awesome race action : yes, Aussie superbikes were in their nascent period, piloted by Wayne Gardner, Dennis Neill, Roger Heyes, Rob Phillis, Jim Budd, Mick Cole, Greg Pretty, the Blanco brothers, Rod Cox, Mal Campbell and all, but for me the soon-to-be-gone 350 class (what the hell were they thinking ?) had all the action, with torrid battles featuring Ron Boulden, Gary Coleman, Mark Pace, Steve Fisher, Lee Roebuck, Wayne Gardner, Wayne Clarke, our mate John Wood, Steve Trinder, Paul Lewis, Graeme Geddes, Andrew Johnson,Rob Phillis, Steve Hardwick, Murray Ogilvie, and a host of would-bes chasing them along. Yes, the Swann Series had some amazing dices, Crosby vs Trinder, Gardner vs Campbell, Magee vs McElnea, but for me the 350 racing of the time was what Oran Park was all about.
Sadly, for some reason I'd never heard that poor John Wood had been killed at Surfers. Shame. A good guy...
