Not Steve Trasler. I took that picture about 5 or 6 laps into an 8 lap race, Trasler would have probably been picking himself out of the haybales by then!...maybe a bit cruel but I seem to have recollections of him falling off a lot.

It's Steve Lanyman.

The elbow was good before the bus stop, I crashed exiting that and one of the other lads bust his pelvis going into it...dangerous but the bikes make too much power for the elbow now maybe so there's not much option I suppose rolleyes.gif

The NW200 now has 5 chicanes in it.
What a track it must have been without them.

Two schools of thought on this, I raced at Mallory without the bus stop and devils elbow was a bit scary, also the barriers were really close, but I also think the old saying of 'the throttle works both ways' applies equally.

I think they spoilt a lot of circuits in the 90s and i'm glad I rode them all before this took place, I have particularly vivid memories of going through the old start/finish at Scarborough before farm bends was installed, I think it was just about flat out in 5th on my 350 aiming for the grey bit between the green bits, bloody awesome!!

If they carry on with this chicane culture most circuits over the next 10 years will become one constant flip flop of chicanes with average lap speeds of about 45mph punctuated by loads of painful highsides (unless of course traction control has made highsides impossible by then)

What did Stu Avant call it pre-chicanes?

Something like a NZ track on steroids! biggrin.gif

I did Mallory pre and post bus stop, I thought it was a good idea safety wise for the quick stuff but when they added Edwinas and the Gerards exit chicanes because the BSB guys were lapping in 40-odd seconds, I thought it was a retrograde step which completely ruined the character of the track. It's just a Three Sisters clone now.

3 Sisters brings back memories, it was a crazy little place, I won my first race there and actually used to enjoy going there a couple of times a year just for something a bit different, can you believe it was even shorter in those days!! I used only the first 3 gears for the whole lap on a TZ350 maybe just hooking 4th for about 2 seconds past the start/finish line.

I am old enough to have done them all without Chicanes and I think we had the Lap Record or Race Record at the NW200 for years. The wost was the old Spa. Scared the shit out of me and I was hopeless but with the chicanes and shortened I was half a chance.....

They started putting in Chicanes in the NW200 after 1982, due to the demise of John Newbold in that year’s race ... sad day!! cry.gif cry.gif

I had the pleasure of spending a Sunday riding round the old Spa circuit on a mates FZR600 when I worked in Belgium in '98, bloody awesome I thought, the potholes in the road gave me the shits as well!!

Don't know if any of you saw it, but on the NW coverage BBC did a Q & A with Guy Martin

What he says about the new chicane at Mathers is hilarious - from 3 minutes 10 seconds, but the whole interview brilliant...

Just to add to this, I got the FZR up to 235 kph in places and was shitting myself with the state of the roads, respect to Stu et al who raced there in anger up.gif I loved the Stavelot/Blanchimont sections, really qick, even on open roads. up.gif

Yep , Glenn , thats correct , Gary Bryan was a very , very good sidecar racer before being confined to a wheel-chair , he is still sponsoring , on the RGB Weslake , a rapid piece of kit , rider now Mike Hose up.gif

Just found this stuff, excellent, I used to mechanic for him, Oulton Park was where the dreadful smash happened. He went out in practice and the URS ? turned right in to the pits in front of him without putting his hand up. Smashed all the fairing up so he decided to race naked. He had a good start, Pat Sheridan in front, Mac Hobson. Chris Vincent hung back, there was a rumour later on that he had hung back because he had a bad feeling about it all. Down the back straight they went, Sheridan went off, him and his passenger died, Gary went off, head first in to the barrier, his new Bell helmet looked like a hard boiled egg that had been tapped on the top, Pete, his passenger was hit by a chap, forget his name now, that powered thru the melee, he died instantly. Ill never forget that day, Gary was talking to Weslake, they were developing a 500 for the Grand Prix, all over, friends dead, the horrible drive to Gobowen to learn he had spinal injuries.
The Battle of the Twins, magic, stuffed Ducati good style, unbelievable.

They were tight with trophies though lol.gif I did a few S67 meets in 80 and ended up 3rd in their 250 proddy championship and didn't even get a pot eek.gif

Hi there, I was a regular with southern 67 in 1982/83 in the big proddie class, I did manage to prise a couple of top 3 trophies out of them, but didnt get one for 3rd overall in 1983. they were quite a good little club really. Mark Heard

I agree, they were a nice little club and i enjoyed their meetings and the battles with Tony Green and Jimmy Webb in the 250 Proddy class. It was handy that they had the formula 250 class as well, the extra rides were fun, especially dicing with Steve Colville(always an eye opener) lol.gif
