Its time to stop knocking Lewis Hamilton for those who insist on doing so, yes so let's see Emerson Fittipaldi , Niki Lauda, Martin Brundle, Michael Schumacher, Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Mark Blundell, Mario Andretti, Damon Hill, Eddie Jordan, Eddie Irvine, Johnny Herbert, Ron Dennis, Jenson Button, David Coulthard etc etc etc all highly rate Hamilton and think it is only a matter of time that basically that he wins races and championships.
Meanwhile back on some obscure internet bulletin board some anonymous posters try to pursuade us that he's over-hyped and overrated. roflmao.gif

Good for you. At least there'll be more than six cars this year.

And as for Hamilton, well done Will for spotting this talent so early.

I first started following him when the internet gave us a way of digging around looking for results of minor karting events, back in 2001.

Congrats on Lewis' very classy first win clap.gif Even though I am a fan, was still surprised with the degree of calmness and complete imperviousness to pressure combined with his relentless speed. The psychological battle with Alonso starts in earnest!

Its funny that Hamilton is in some sort of media blockade and British media is dying for stories.

In the meanwhile in Finland. Certain local area paper(TS) F1 reporter has regular chats with a guy who is in charge of Mclaren's health program and especially (mental/physical) trainer of Hamilton.

Because Hamilton has no finnish passport I have no special interest to translate those stories but I can put this:

"Monday morning he will look at the mirror and say: Lewis Hamilton, nothing has been won yet"

I've been wondering, if Lewis managed to perform vey well in F1, would it help the popularity of the sport? (perhaps the black people community?) maybe in the same way that Tiger Wood does?

Bernie has always said that F1 needs a black driver, I'm sure Bernie can't wait to see Lewis arrives.

I've been following F1 since, what, 1980. I'm a Black American. I followed Willy T. Ribbs. I don't think F1 "needs" a Black driver, but they could possibly get some percentage of the 25 million Blacks in America to pay attention. Hell, I see Blacks wearing NASCAR leather jackets in Detroit and NASCAR aint exactly renowned for being "open to racial diversity".

Don't overlook Brazil. There are 75 million Black Africans there. They already had Ayrton, but now that have their racial kin which could mean money as well.

I also think that LH could market many products where race shouldn't be an issue:

Tyres
Watches
Fashion

What will be required is to have US products marketed by him - even though the US economy is tanking. This means that the sponsors will have to simply MAKE A DECISION as opposed to the Marketing Research and simply state, "Hey, LH, we want you to market this for us."

I'd like to think that his race would not make a difference on the track, BUT nationality plays a huge role in F1 (if not on the actual track) so having a Black-Brit can be a grand slam homerun for F1, McLaren and LH if it's managed properly.

I've managed to get several Blacks in the US interested and they ACTUALLY watched the Canadian and US Grands Prix and asked me many questions during the US GP - including "when is the race in France?" Hey, I'm doing my part. I think Lewis and Ron need to "help a fellow brother (that would be me) out" for doing his part. roflmao.gif

I am truly in awe of this kid . Comparisons to Michael , Senna or other drivers - great drivers , might be a bit too early but he certainly seems to be on par or above par of all the best drivers in F1 today .

He is a 2 time WDC as his team-mate and he is beating him fair and square. Admittedly Alonso is not having an easy time adjusting to BS tyres and a new team with a sensational rookie . But Lewis is cashing in on the opportunity . Let us see how the situation evolves .

If Nando keeps his cool , there will be a situation in the near future where things will start swinging his way . He must be there to cash in on this . He might need this season to reach the levels of harmony he had with the team while at Renault but he will get there only if he keeps his wits about him . Bouts of fury and anger like the swerve at Indy won't help matters.

I wish that by the time Alonso is settled at McLaren , Lewis will be in a position to still take him head on and win . That will the true test . But that is not a detraction from any of Lewis' achievements . He has stunned everybody . Fantastic . I just love this guy up.gif up.gif

First of All Lewis is mixed race (half black and half white). He isn't Caribbean or American he's British with a Black British dad and a White British mom. In many ways he is unique and different and correspondingly can appeal to blacks and whites and other races and cultures. But lets get off the black tip if you don't mind.

Obviously he is a good role model for black people. The point is, he is what he is. He has a shared heritage. In America black American culture can often be "us against them". Before Lewis is adopted by any particular group (black or white) there should a logical acceptance of the fact that he is not one or the other. I think he handles the race issue marvelously well and his interactions with people appears to be completely independent of colour and creed and i think its great.

When you look at him you see a "Black" person. It's neither good or bad. It simply is. Most people in the US won't have a clue as to who the kid is. They'll see this young Black guy in a racing suit next to an AMG Mercedes or something. It's marketing. Newsflash: Many Blacks in the US and Brazil are of mixed ancestry as well yet they identify with "people of color".

This isn't a "race thing" it's MARKETING.

I had a meeting with an ex-NFL player who is black. His daughters are a Korean-Black mix. I was amazed how much racing info he had absorbed from the 2 races in NA.

I think it is very, very positive marketing.

Here is an interesting web page I came across on the BBC site. It contains comments from numerous sport personalities regarding Lewis Hamilton.

Here's what Tiger Woods had to say about Lewis;

"Without a doubt, Lewis is one of the most exciting talents to hit the sporting scene in recent years.

"It's not just his results that I've been impressed by, it's the way he has handled himself off the race track. I think he has the potential to be a terrific role model."

Some information from this journalist that follows F1 all around the world...

Lewis is the grandson of Africans that migrated to Granada (Caribean Islands).
Anthony (his dad) married an english white woman, Carmen Lockhart, but they soon separated after having Lewis.

At 6, Lewis won the National Video Game Championship, promoted by BBC's Blue Peter show.

At 8, Lewis first tried a go kart, but experience was scary bcs he crashed, broke his nose and the bleed terrified him.

At 10, Lewis became the youngest drive rto win the Cadete (Kadett) go kart championship.
He met Ron dennis in the podium ceremony, asked for an authograph, his phone nr. and said someday he would drive for him.
His dad worked for British railways and had 3 jobs to support Lewis career.
They used to travel in his car and sleep in it at night. frown.gif

At 13, Ron called Lewis inviting him to be the first driver of McLaren Junior Drivers Scheme.

The rest we know...

Lewis signed a 3 year deal and will provide him USD 300K this year or 1% of Alonso's wages.

I can't help but think what a great story for a movie. I imagine there is a movie producer out there thinking the same thing.

It seems that Lewis Hamilton has found way to the top of the time-sheets again. Of course, the implication that the car seems to have been cobbled together as the “Practical” element of an International Correspondents course in Racing Car Engineering rather takes the gilt from off the gingerbread. For sure, you would have thought someone would have been more careful choosing their, long distance, “Learn by Mail in the comfort of your own home” educational institute .

Hamilton: ''I've always dreamed of being (living) in Londen but it has become too difficult. Everytime I go out camera teams appear. Alonso couldn't remain in his country because he couldn't live a normal life.''

Great race by Hamilton in Fuji in response to Alonso's Spa/Monza charge. Of course things could still go horribly wrong but he's got a great chance at the title with only 2 races to go smile.gif

I'll turn the sound down when it gets to that bit - we could buy him some iffy oysters, that might keep him out of the commentary box!

I'm a little apprehensive. Watch the 1986 F1 highlights video and a certain A. Prost concedes the title to Nigel Mansell with 2 races to go after the Brit wins a dominating victory at Estoril...

Lewis father is quite an character. Read and enjoy his attitude:

"We're going to be positive - we're going to come back next year, the team's going to come back strong, hopefully all the rubbish that's gone through Formula 1 this year will not be there next year, and I think we're going to be a force to be reckoned with again."

He also paid tribute to Hamilton's army of fans, and urged them to stay positive this evening.

"Thank you to everybody who's been supporting us this year, and apologies, but have a drink and be happy - because it is a happy day," Anthony concluded."

LH would not be WDC at all.
After that meeting in Paris, Ferrari stoped the pressure, how come?
The guys made an agreement, that´s obvious.
How a driver running for a phantom team could be champion?
Cheers for Kimi, he won without cheating or stealing.
The best thing for LH and McLadrons is to lose.
Now, everything will be forgoten and 2008 is ahead. New life. lol.gif

It looks that way... he's damn serious about it:

Hamilton begins trek across Gobi Desert
October 22, 2007

After the conclusion to the 2007 FIA Formula One World Championship, McLaren's young star Lewis Hamilton announced that his 2007 pace was far below his expectations. On the eve of October 21, Hamilton informed media personnel that he would be going on a "journey" to test himself to the limits and make his body and soul one. When asked what how he planned on doing so, Hamilton revealed that he would be crossing the Gobi Desert on rollerblades.

"It just feels like the right time to do it. We had a really good season, but my pace wasn't all there or at least not where I wanted it to be. I think I got sloppy because I easily could have finished with three or four hundred more points."

When asked why he chose the Gobi Desert and if he has taken the necessary precautions for such a trek, Hamilton simply laughed and said that he doesn't need to make preperations, he is Lewis Hamilton.

Early this morning, Hamilton departed from Brazil to cross the Gobi Desert, saying that he hopes to be back home by next month before shaking down a McLaren Mercedes at Barcelona.

"My target lap time will be sixteen seconds." Hamilton was quoted as saying. "Any more than that and I will deem my trek across the desert as a waste of time. I cannot accept failure."
