I think that most sports do that. I was a bit surprised that John Sergeant didn't waltz away with the vote...
ensign14
Does anybody really care? Hoy had a huge advantage, anyway, the Scots always vote along nationalist lines and would have voted en masse just to stop a Sassenach.
Buttoneer
Judging from a quick straw poll around the office Hoy seems to be a bit popular with the ladies too, so he was a shoe-in for the win.

Were you naive enough to expect him to win it? The UK just had its best Olympics ever by a huge margin, I expected the top three, but thought the swimmer might have beaten the cyclist.

I get a bit silly over women with nice arses, after that poster, Rebecca Romero was the one for me. I forget what she was meant to be advertising, but I'll never forget that arse...

Nope. I cant make any chocolate of a sports personality contest anyway without some proper scientific trait measuring.

Because, amazing as it seems, women do sport as well. They're not just barefoot and pregnant by the kitchen sink.

NOOOOOOOOOOO. They are? Youve just shattered another one of my illusions.

Even if it was ment to avoid discriminating women, they couldv given it another name like sportsman/woman of the year.

Now it gives the impression the contest was about their personality, and not their achievements. Wich is silly.

This contest has been running rather successfully since 1954. Perhaps you should learn a bit about it's history before worrying about what it's called.

Maybe its time to get with the program and adjust to todays times. Stop treating vieuwers like theyre stupid uneducated cattle.

400k callers on a population of 60 million plus succesfull? I think the cheryl cole show pulls in more than that.

Not all 60million were watching.

Or perhaps you should remember that it's a British program aimed at British audience who understand what it's about.
equality
Now you are doing the same! Where did you get the impression i didnt know that?

Even if it was aimed at the occupants of herefordshire alone isnt a free card to give it a nonsense name. Its not 1954 anymore you know.

If you wanna have a personality contest, you could invite all sorts of disciplines? If it was for sporting achievements why not simply call it sportsman of the year?

Im confused rolleyes.gif

I was really trying to avoid commenting on this pathetically petty off-shoot, but you're like a dog with a bone -

personality noun (personalities) 1 a person's nature or disposition; the qualities that give one's character individuality. 2 strength or distinctiveness of character • lots of personality. 3 a well-known person; a celebrity.

Any further questions?

Ahh, so its about the person who does some kind of sport and gets the most column inches? It gets even more silly by the minute.

Well they could have called it "Most Popular Sports Person", but it wouldn't have meant anything different and would have been a lot less snappy. Fortunately the BBC recognised that the word 'personality' wouldn't be confusing to people of at least average intelligence.

lol.gif No, instead they chose a name that confused highly educated people. Hence my statement they shouldnt treat their vieuwers like cattle.

Anyway, its just my opinion expressed, hope you can live with the fact Lewis dindt win it. Based on achievements i think Hoy was a decent winner and wouldv gotten my vote as well. Otherwise id have voted for the girl but not because of her sporting achievements smoking.gif

As I said before, I've no problems with him not winning, it didn't affect my day, although it appears to have made yours. I doubt many people expected him to win when he was competing with the Olympics team - in a non-Olympic year he probably would have won, in a hugely successful Olympic year there was almost no chance. However, I remain astonished that you continue to find "Sports Personality of the Year" such a difficult concept to grasp.

Yet you're the only one confused, I suppose you're the only highly educated person then?

Chris Hoy deserves his win for his phenomenal achievement especially in the circumstances (his discipline was scrapped with him dominating it, so he retrained to do three different disciplines and spanked all comers at those). While I voted for Lewis it was a tough call and I only voted for him in the end to even it out in this house. Hoy was not only our star of the Olympics but also at the World Championships in Manchester earlier in the year. It's just a pity that the profile of sailing prohibited Ben Ainslie from taking his place in the top three as his achievements in winning three Golds in three consecutive games is also very impressive especially considering he only has one discipline per games but has changed type of boat over the years as well. Romero also did amazingly to switch from Rowing to Cycling and win medals in both.

In any other year Lewis would have walked the award, but the Olympics and Paralympics have made this an amazing year for British Sport and given us hope (something us British are not used to in sport) for the future.

I doubt that lewis wouldv walked it. As it is he was nerly beaten bya girl. If i read the comments on bbcs 606, the most patriotoc fanbase of lewis ever, hamilton gets a lot of stick for suposedly being obnoxious, arrogant and other accusations that hardly contribute to him having a nice personality. I think a lot of people think he talks a lot of hot air and havent forgotten about his remarks on Button or the move to switzerland. In that, Hoy seems much more genuine. I also dont agree the Brits arent used to hope. Theres plenty of big sports names there. Always was and always wil be.

He came second to a triple olympic champion and beat a double Olympic champion, out of the nominee's only three of them were not Olympians and he beat the other two none Olympians by a massive margin. This year he won a world championship, as did Calzaghe, Murray won some Masters tournaments but nothing big. He would have been far and away the winner as far as I can see and yes I know that votes would have transferred to others but a lot would have transferred to him. Murray cannot be justified as more deserving, or even deserving at all after his petulance at the Olympics, of this award than Lewis.

Chris Hoy 283,630 votes
Lewis Hamilton 163,864
Rebecca Adlington 145,924
Ben Ainslie 35,472
Joe Calzaghe 34,077
Andy Murray 19,415
Nicole Cooke 18,256
Christine Ohuruogu 7,677
Bradley Wiggins 5,633
Rebecca Romero 4,526

Olympic cycling champion Chris Hoy has been named 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Scot, who won three gold medals in Beijing, beat Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington to the honour.

Hoy, 32, becomes the first cyclist to win the prestigious award since Tommy Simpson in 1965.

"I really didn't expect this," added Hoy, who received a standing ovation after he came to the stage to collect his award from Sir Steve Redgrave and Michael Johnson.

"After the year I've had and the whole team has had, to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year, it just means so much. This is the big one and this is just unbelievable.

"Standing here holding it in my hands, looking at the names on this trophy, it's quite incredible.

Formula One champion Hamilton, who was runner-up for the second year, always felt it would not be his year to win the BBC prize.

"In an Olympic year, I always thought an Olympian would win," said the 23-year-old Englishman.

"I was up against such amazing athletes and I was very proud to be standing up there with them."

Calzaghe fought only twice this year in the middle of the night, didnt he?

Lewis got column inches by the dozens. Out of the 20 news items on bbc website, 18 where about lewis and all of them where glorifying him all the way up the ass. He had a dedicated tv show in ITV and all the newspapers where lewis this and lewis that. The final race there where some 8 million plus vieuwers yet he only gathered 160k votes on bbc?. That he didnt win it is disgracefull if you take that into account. He had 20 times more media exposure than all other contenders combined.

Chris Hoy and the Cycling team had pretty much blanket coverage on the BBC throughout the Olympics, in the papers and a Victory parade through London with the rest of the Olympians. They had photo opportunities with him at the head of every single one, and meetings with the Prime Minister. The Media talked about nothing else for a month. When Lewis wins a race he is 6 pages back in the sports sections of all the news papers, the Olympics was constantly on the back page. To say that he got 20 times the media coverage is to be deliberately obtuse.

Considering ITV spend about 4 hours on Lewis in each GP weekend you could conclude Lewis has gotten 70 hours of live televison for about 9 months. That same 9 months F1 racing, ITV website and BBC website did nothing else but kiss his behind. Papers like the sun, the times have dedicated reporters on f1. The president elect of the USA would sign right awya for so much coverage.

In contrast the olympics where only 3 weeks on, with lots and lots of other disciplines on show. Cycling is far from being the most popular sport in Britain and get very mild exposure compared to F1. I dont think my conclusion that Lewis gets far, far more exposure than all of the others combined, isnt such a weird one.

I swear I put perspective on it in my posts, but your whole agenda was to say that Lewis in some way threw it away and bash him for that, explain how you 'put perspective on the voting' when there is no thought to the other side of the argument in your posts?

You claimed he wouldv walked it if it wasnt for the olympic year. I countered that i dont think he wouldv walked it for various reasons, one of them being him getting superexposure for almost a year and still he didnt make it. Thats all. We can agree to disagree on that but i dont see the troublemaking in it, unless you dont like someone to vent out their own opinion without, pay attention lost prophet, resorting to lame argumentum ad hominem.

Did lewis abuse someone in your family or something? You seem totally obsessed with the guy. I don't know much about this bbc stuff, but i think winning three gold medals is amazing and as a cyclist i would have voted for the guy, just from the green point of view to highlight cyclists. That doesn't mean what Lewis achieved is much less, just that three gold medals is just more fantastic as an individual sport.

I think you need a break. Is not good for your health to be so taken with loath for a driver you have and may never meet in person up.gif

He came 2nd to an Olympian and got three times as many votes as all the non-Olympians combined. On what basis do you think that a non-Olympian would suddenly have enjoyed a massive increase in popularity to beat Hamilton?

Just shows how little understanding of the show you really have then. Out of interest have you ever actually watched it, or are you just arguing the toss over something you read here and know absolutely nothing about in reality. The really funny thing is that your the only one complaining(Trolling). I doubt there is a single LH fan here who doesnt think that the right person won.
