I know it's nothing to do with the BBC, but I really don't like those new on-screen graphics (although having said that it did take me a full hour of practice 1 to notice them). I'm specifically not keen on the bottom-left to top-right staggering of the top 8 drivers layout, which makes it very awkward to follow logically.

Same here. In the Bahrain practice thread I just asked about the left hand column of driver's positions, it seems to have disappeared cry.gif

Don't really know how they expect new people to follow it if they are not going to show the positions on the left (the one with the names like MSC, ALO, HAM etc) like they used to ohwell.gif

It's not the BBC's fault but does anyone know why they have disappeared? Maybe FOM have something else lined up?

At a guess it'll probably just be kept for Qualifying sadly...

I quite liked the new graphics, watching online, but I was hoping to see if Schumacher would stay as MSC or if, now that his surname only appears once in the entry list, he would be SCH. They may well have more graphics for qualifying, like people say, as there is more to stay on top of.

Yes. I have to say I found it a bit weird that they were so quick to tell me I am not allowed to photograph in there. I was photographing only something people walking in there would see any ways. I complied, but wondered what's the fuss... not a big deal to me though cat.gif

I saw a picture of the track timing screen on twiter, and it had him as MSC, I was wondering the same thing.

Oh my goodness, listen to the Highlights of FP1 and FP2 on the BBC website and laugh at how bad the reporter talking about them is.
Anssi
QUOTE (Mark Bennett @ Mar 12 2010, 16:55) *
If you are talking to the person and call them "Sir" you are just addressing them correctly.

If you are talking about someone, and you say "Sir Jack Brabham" then it means they are a knight of the realm

Well, yes. It is a bit ambiguous, though, like I have found many things with the English language to be. Consider this: what if there is a slightly longer pause between the words "Sir" and "Jack"?

Something like this:

Sir!

<pause>

Jack Brabham!

Is that not just calling for a Sir as in talking to a person. Then after that proceeding to say the full name of that person. There is a very fine line there as I see it.

My initial point about this is that perhaps the pit-lane reporter was just trying to be polite. I would forgive her that mistake.

Its quite normal - they will assume you are either reporters up to no good, or rivals spying. My sister works for a big supermarket here and they often send her into shops to take as many pics as you can before getting booted out
Anssi
Oh come on tongue.gif a souvenir shop! And the Ferrari Store! There was some tie and a horse emblem that I was photographing... it's not like I worked for McLaren and was going to copy the design of the tie tongue.gif And I think McLaren are well capable of designing their own ties so what would Ferrari be so concerned of... cat.gif in fact I think they want to protect the horse emblem primarily. They could put a sign up there saying no photographing of those certain objects so it wouldn't be such a surprise when they shoo you away.

Yeah I know the stores spy on each other, here in Finland too. But a small souvenir shop with books and mugs and flags and such for sale... hmm... well, maybe if they are afraid I would take the price information to a competitor. But I think if I was such a spy I wouldn't be photographing the prices. I would use something else like a hidden video camera and/or a voice recorder.

Sorry for the off-topic! I won't continue posting about this.

Compare:

- http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/5683/2010...p1avisnapsh.jpg --> 4:3 safe graphics via BBC in UK

Virtually the same image (OK, slightly out), but different graphics.

So no one is losing out on anything, really. Although I suspect the rundown down the side will return in the '4:3 safe' zone tomorrow permanently for quali only.

If only I had known this before waking up early today after a night out just to catch the practice.

It didn't help that I couldn't even watch it on the BBC website on the PS3 because, unlike last season, they seemed to have changed some things around, so the video is all messed up when trying to watch on the PS3...!

iPlayer works fine on it, though. Good to see FP on it for this season, I can't remember it being on it last season. Maybe just the highlights.

I like the new graphics though (It's an F1 thing though rather than BBC's thing)

It's on the iPlayer, and there's highlights on the BBC Sport website. Who doesn't have access to the Internet, a PVR or VCR, or a radio these days? And if you don't, you can't expect broadcasters to still make it possible to watch things at a more convenient time for you.

It wasn't terrible, until the HD lot kicked up a fuss, and the BBC thought it'd be a bright idea to make things worse for those with the worst services, and better for those with the better services! Logical thinking, as always.

For those that haven't seen the new graphics yet, this is the one I was referring to on the previous page: http://twitpic.com/184ssl/full

In that format, it would make much more sense (and be easier to read) if the order was flipped vertically so that 1 was where 4 is and 5 was where 8 is etc. Although I'd much prefer they were just weren't staggered. (eg: http://twitpic.com/184vaj/full - of course, if this was the case there would also be the argument to then remove the slanting from the blocks as well)

Eesh, no way, that would just be confusing; but it's a matter of orientation I guess. If you're reading up to down (which is how I'm used to doing it), this is fine, but if you read left to right, I guess you may have a point (I believe that's how it's done in american sports, isn't it?)

Anyway, off topic, I like what you quoted in your post tongue.gif.

I used to do so, but in recent years it's just seemed so much hassle that I never bothered. It's normally against my religion to replace stuff before it breaks, but the VCR was useless. The PVR is so easy, I've already set it to record the entire F1 season - it took 2 clicks!
MrAerodynamicist
They should have first position on top, but slope from left to right, so match the direction of reading. I suspect the right-to-left slope was done to match the sloping F1 logo.

TBH, I was suprised at the new graphics. I'd thought they'd keep the same ones for 2010, and was just imagining the new pairings displayed on their old graphics. But that's just me.

Bloody idiotic legislation. mad.gif

There is no legislation to stop you taking photographs in the UK, they cannot confiscate your camera or memory cards and they cannot make you delete photographs you've taken.

In certain places they are allowed to stop and search anyone with no reason (known as a section 44), this is anti terrorism legislation but is widely abused. When stopped under section 44 you are not obliged to tell them your name, address, reason for being in that place, where you are going etc - only if they suspect you of committing an offence do you have to divulge any details.

See http://photographernotaterrorist.org/ for more info.

The BBC analogue channels are still broadcast in 4:3, although it's 16:9 via freeview, satellite, cable or iplayer. Analogue switch-off isn't scheduled until Dec 2012. Until then they have to cater for the lowest common demoninator.

Strange that Jake does the Friday call to Chris Moyles, who clearly hasn't a clue about F1. Yet on Radio 2 (which has similar audience numbers, but a wider age demographic) you have Chris Evans, who is a petrol-head and would be best suited to pimp the F1 coverage on the BBC.

Not sure, but I guess F1 is one of the most important sport the BBC have left, BBC1 is the flagship station, so makes sense.
Not sure that a phone in would really fit into the Evans show ?

Was a fair bit of messing about this morning, Jake pretended to be ill, and DC started the chat with Moyles, Chris handed over for him to set the scene as Jake does and he clammed up, then Jakes voice pops up in the background, so Chris asks Jake a question, who is then meant to put it to DC, Jake however changes the question each time, at one point he asks DC how much sense Eddie will make this year, DC replies that EJ is top class and has his own opinions and last year reminded him how lucky he'd been never to drive for him lol.gif

It was all impromptu and ad libbed, was quite funny.. dont really see that working on BBC2.

The picture isn't 4:3 - the graphics are. Probably best if I explain further:

BBC broadcast Formula 1 in widescreen.

They have an option of two 'sets' of graphics from Formula One Management. 4:3 safe graphics and the 16:9 graphics. As the images show, the graphics do come with slight differences.

BBC chose the 4:3 safe graphics. This does not mean the picture broadcasted in 4:3, it simply means that the graphics are 4:3 - no stretching, no anything.

Yep and its totally wrong. They were within their rights to arrest him, it all comes under the rather grey area of the officer suspecting something is up - they must have reasonable suspicion that something is wrong, but how can you define that? its very silly and vague. If pushed, in this case its ridiculous to think this guy was doing anything other than taking pictures of christmas lights, if pushed I think this could of caused trouble for the constabulary involved.

I know some togs have false details ready to give if asked, which is illegal.. not because they are doing anything wrong, but they object to an invasion of privacy and their rights.

The one on the BBC F1 website is counting down to FP3.

And seeing as you ask:

Saturday
07:55 to 09:05 - BBC RED BUTTON
10:10 to 12:30 - BBC ONE
- qualifying starts at 11:00
18:30 to 19:00 - BBC NEWS CHANNEL

Sunday
11:10 to 14:15 - BBC ONE
- race starts at 12:00
14:15 to 15:15 - BBC RED BUTTON
