I'm currently doing some research for a project on the Lobethal Grand Prix circuit used between 1938-1948. Data i require is photos from car or bike races, topographical info, and stories from its hay-day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Run a search using the keyword Lobethal. Ray Bell has posted lots of things about the track in lots of different threads.

Interesting that somebody else has (other than Ray) has an interest in the old Lobethal circuit. I am planning to be in South Australia over the Christmas and New Year period and intend to drive and photograph the old circuit in all its 2000 glory.

Also there are some photos posted, I'm fairly sure.
The best everyday source of photos is the 'Official 50-race History of the Australian Grand Prix.'
Please email me for anything specific... raygbell@ozemail.com.au.
Anyone else going to be there round Christmas... I think I am, too.
By the way.. .I'm back.

I read Ray Bell's article he wrote, i got a link from a friend - can't remember which thread it was, and decided to go have a look at the circuit. I drove it last Saturday and took some photos with my trusty camera. I only drove about 2km from the start/finish when i came across the hump-back bridge mentioned in the article. Needless to say i imagined driving over it at 120mph and shivers went down my spine smile.gif

The downhill run into Lobethal wasn't what i expected. It was only steep in parts not a continual decline like i had imagined. However some parts were still steep. These parts also had jumps... >smile.gif say no more heh heh

BTW, I am schedule to go see Lobethal again at the end of the year coinciding with the 'Race of a Thousand Years'. I have a friend that wants to go see the track as well so we are going together. If anybody else wants to hook up then let me know.

Also, i don't use Forum's often. How can i post a photo? You may like to see the one i took of the hump-back bridge taken last Saturday. ta

Hmmm... the photo I have of that bridge has a mid-sixties Valiant on it. I've got about forty pics, I think, I took around the circuit.... I want to go to that race, we should get a party up.
Problem is, the people of Lobethal went for second best when they lost their race.
They now have a christmas lights shindig, with front yards and houses done up for the santa claus set and attracting visitors by the busload.
Let's get together on it, anyway!

We will be in Adelaide from the 28th of December, for a few days - the ALMS race included, and then into the Barossa for a few days amongst the vines. It would be great to put faces to names of any of TNC regulars who will be around at that time.

Ray, is this the track?

Your image shows a (small) part of the track, just north of the township.

You might, also, like to look at the Lobethal Carnival thread here.

The Lobethal Carnival website will also be useful and within that, you'll come across this map of the circuit - which shows that the whole circuit is much bigger.

I trust I've grabbed the right end of the stick from your brief post.

I might also say that if anyone wants to know any specifics about the track as it currently is, I live 20 minutes away and I'm always happy to give the digital camera and MGB an outing!
