Bigger caps means more space for the sponsors, this is how F1 works and I bet is the real reason.

But really, on the fashion sense, I don't really care. You people probably wouldn't be complaining if they all looked like mop haired indies or something.
bourbon
Well yeah, that Ferrarri one was kickin wild - loved it. But that one wasn't worn as much as the flat brim stuff.

It's like this: F1 drivers are still in their neatly fitted coveralls, color-coordinated booties, 10 billion dollar eyewear, 7 billion dollar watch pieces, and matching tailored accessories (coats, windbreakers, scarf, wool cap, can coolers, etc.). So when they sport the 10 G hats a bit or drink out of those super twisting tall straws - well that adds a little "color" to the show - it is all good.

As martinfjord says Kimi's cap was a New Era 59Fifty which makes it the same design that all players in Major and Minor League Baseball use so there's nothing 'ghetto' about them. Because the cap is fitted and has no flex you need a size or two larger if you have lots of hair so you don't get bad 'hat hair' also larger caps are in fashion these days.

I have and had no idea what the fuss was about. A New Era or Flexfit is a far nicer hat then the crappy caps most teams produce. The lack of fuss over Vettel is that he drives for Red Bull who have a history of snazzy hats due to their sponsorship of extreme sports.

(None of them are trucker hats which have a mesh back and the front is a kind of foamy material.)
Birelman
To answe the OP:

Maybe because Alonso isn't trying to get Vettel's racing drive? Hence, no need to ridicule him?
Bouncing Pink Ball
lol.gif I had a trucker cap during that fashion phase. It was Von Dutch. That's about as sad as owning something Ed Hardy! As for the 59Fifty (which, as has been pointed out, is the cap type in question here), I hate 'em worn oversized. A ball cap is a ball cap and there's no way to make it look especially styling without making yourself seem either pretentiously trendy or a little goofy looking. It's a freaking ball cap.

Now as for F1 team gear fashion in general, don't even get me started on my loathing for tucked in polo shirts. I'd rather a grid packed with drivers in huge 59Fifty caps than to have them all walking around dressed like fiftysomethings on casual day at the office.

(Damn, multi-posting in a fashion thread. I'm so desperately female.)

I've got a RedBull 59fifty....

It isn't 'ghetto'; it's just a more progressive look. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you have to be so intolerant.

Most of these drivers are young guys who grew up influenced by hip hop culture. Let them wear what they want!

But but... lol.gif

Let them cry... cry.gif lol.gif

I will bitch on behalf of the journos. Those caps are dreadful. F1 drivers should not look like gangsta rappers.

How dare they!

They should clean up and shave too. Whats up with that ugly hair! No tattoos or piercings either! roflmao.gif

I sometimes imagine that you guys are all a bunch of 70 year old grannies taking tea at the table, with bottle-thick glasses and flowered dresses, complaining about how the "youngsters today" are "misguided".

In that other thread someone had the nerve to name Jacques Villeneuve as the greatest example of "cool" in F1. Jesus.

Yeah... only a 70-year old grannie would think Jacques is what the "kids" see as "rad".

Like many, I dont remember any fuss about his cap, and couldnt care less.
Personally I dont like the flat brimmed caps, but some do.
Guy I worked for is in his 60s, and he loved Kimi's flat brim.
Main reason being is its pure retro.
Baseball caps from the 70s and 80s were nearly always flat brimmed.

I had no idea James Hunt was gangsta.

Here's a word about fashion.. In every pack of foxhounds, chasing a fox, there's one dog, one hound at the back of the pack, with no sense of smell at all. He can't smell that fox, can he? He doesn't even know there is a fox. All he's doing is following assholes. And that, is all you need to know about fashion.

I like the flat bill hats I wear em my self! I remember Nicky wearing them since 2006! Its just a fashionable style amongst younger people especially here in America

When I see that part of the reason people resent Kimi so much is his hat and I read people's assinine blather about how "ferrari is supposed to be this" and "f1 is supposed to be that" it only makes me like Kimi more and even makes me start to like the hats. If it wasn't for Vettel, Kubica, and maybe Rosberg(?) would there be any really honest, interesting, and class acts left in F1 at all? Seems like every non-boring non-cheat has gotten the hell out and gone drive for other series. God forbid someone do something wild and crazy like wear a hat that isn't identical to everyone else's. What Blasphemy! Hammer the nail, hammer the nail! He's terrible! He's ruining F1!

After reading the comments on this thread, I've got that sinking feeling that I've unwittingly become an old fart. Perhaps I will have to get a cap like Vettel's so I can be down with the kids. Or not.

I'm hardly cool. Jacques could start by ditching the lame ballad songs and the weird circular glasses, though.

Corporate image, or something like that.
Red Bull isn't Ferrari.

And these caps look ridiculous anyhow. Is it ghetto style or what?
They should return to wherever they came from.

Oh, you mean Africa? Where european colonists forcefully loaded them on...

There is a LOT of suggestion in your post, particularly in the last sentence. I won't even go into how these people had no choice in where they ended up. if you truly believe your statement, why bother being subtle about it? Oh, you want attention. Here it is.

You'd think these 'bloggers' might have something more worthy to report than the size of one's cap, let alone place it at the forefront of an article(!) No wonder Kimi prefers the WRC atmosphere...his cap now has ear mittens yet no one says a word wink.gif

"Grunge or whatever its supposed to be"???

This journo has no clue about popular culture and modern society. Just an old fashioned monocle to see the world through.

I agree. That's a slightly odd look JV has going on there. lol.gif

I think in the other thread though it was a case of late 90's/early 00's Villeneuve. That's what people were describing....and it was a World Champions thread.

For cool in modern F1 (and I said this in that other thread) you can't go past Irv the swerve. Raikkonen and JV thereafter.

Kimi is uber cool because he really doesn't give a **** about anything. biggrin.gif

Meh, I saw something that bothered me and pointed it out. That's about as far as my personal concern goes for the issue. But I do believe that it's a little old-fashioned, if not dangerous, to make comments that are subtley charged with anglo-centricity. But that probably boils down to perpetually being exposed to the race issue throughout life. Perhaps there wasn't a racist comment in there, but to many, it would certainly seem so.

Blame it on my country for racializing everything!

No really though, perhaps my response is from seeing everything through an American perspective. Because race and immigration have been such huge issues here, when an American says to "go back to where they came from," it almost always refers to any ethnic minority that is not Anglo Saxon and protestant. And it is almost always a show of intolerance for a different group of people. This has applied to blacks, asians, and even Eastern and Southern Europeans.

It is certainly my fault for jumping the gun, and if there was not a racial message, then I apologize. I'm predisposed to seeking out conflict, so sometimes my mind will create conflict where there isn't any. Perhaps I need to see a shrink so I don't go starting shit everywhere. But again, I am sorry if that was not your intent! If it was, well I've already typed my part anyway.

Red Bull has the jammin' arsenol of hats. I have bought tons of hats in the fashions they spring on from xtreme - some have shown up in F1. I would buy them from RBR if they sold them - but they seem pretty enchanted with making us suffer with traditional purchases and saving the best stuff for those they sponsor. So I buy other brands of the same style. I love caps, skull, wool, winter xtreme, flats and other wild habardashery.

The flatbrim bunny ears is very popular here now - but I like the square wool cap version better. I'll take bets on Vettel showing up in one in winter. I think the time for the press complaining ended with the 2010 Olympics as there was a lot of exposure at that point to what we'd just got glimpses of before.

Who cares? I think it suits him. F1 drivers have to be so careful as to what they say to offend nobody these days the least thing they can do is wear what they want!

In all seriousness that is a legendary F1 picture.

I post on a few USA based forums, and I also post on the occasional Euro one like this motorsport forum. You see alot about the culture. Yes, it's generalising but to hell with it. USA based forums have alot of people who can't spell properly or word a sentance and sound like they are retarded. Even the ones that can spell have alot of silly arguements and are very cocky.. love to trash talk etc etc. Very hard to make a reasoned arguement about anything. Even the well spoken ones have huge gaps in common sense like knowing the difference between Japan and China. Hip hop culture is not a good influence on America's poorly educated impressionable youth but there is more to it then just that. Then you have the Euros... incredibly well spoken, alot of them can speak 2 or 3 languages and you wouldn't even know English isn't their native language. Can make good reasoned arguements. But then you have topics like this which are so overly uptight and pompous. There is the only the Atlantic between you but it's like being from two different planets. Two conflicting ideologies. What's an Australian to do? We are neither American or Euro but share cultural influences from both. Rant over.
