About ****ing time.

We just need a word about the final packaged.
Jean Alesi 90
I would prefer two suppliers.

So when will the first batch of tyres be ready, and what provision for tyre testing is going to be made? I can't see the normal pre-season schedule being enough to test and sort any issues that may arise.

Pirelli would have to manufact tyres first. Actually second; they'd have to cook up the right rubber compounds first. There's talk that they may acquire the TF110 chassis and use it to test the tyres, and if they work quickly, I wouldn't be too surprised if they start getting prototypes tested toward the end of the one-month hiatus in August. I've also heard that the FIA may designate a four-day test after Abu Dhabi (possibly at Abu Dhabi) for the sake of testing the Pirellis with 2010 cars (to stop people getting in some extra time with the 2011 challengers).

What is the rim size? I notice that was not mentioned.

I thought the plan was to increase to 18 inches diameter on the back and something else on the front?

It's to late for next year - maybe in the future.

3 year deal and sole supplier

After Indy 2005, I myself am glad Michelin's still not back in F1...
ArnageWRC
Pirelli...??? Doh, well it could mean interesting races, what with Pirelli and their non grippy tyres. How do they keep getting these sole supplier contracts? Avoiding competition seems to be something Pirelli specialise in.
highdownforce
Just thinking about it...
If GP2 keeps those Bridgestones, what are the chances for the 13th having worse lap times?
korzeniow
Michelin blew it. I hoped they will be the suplier. But at the begining of the case they were in preferential position, so they demended too much and then Pirelli came in...
Sausage
Grats Pirelli up.gif I think they will do a good job.

I'm glad Todt dropped his power struggle silliness over it.

Pirelli up.gif , nice change. I won't miss Bridgestone and their visits to Ferrari.

No low profile tires thank god.

Why? Every other series and pretty much any sports car in the world has low profile tires. Why not F1?

Ferrari and Pirelli.... About time in F1.

So... no Toyota drive for Heidfeld http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84710

So Pirelli are developing the tyre with a GP2 car. How similar I wonder is the rubber eventually for each series?
highdownforce
I've read that it was their way or nothing.

Btw, Pirelli will keep the basic for compounds that we have now:

QUOTE
Q. Looking at what you've seen from Bridgestone this year and their approach to the two compounds, how does Pirelli intend to approach it? Are you looking to create exciting racing?
FG: I would like to have a Canadian GP every race. That would be fantastic. Or rain, because when you have rain there is always a show. When you have no rain we need to do something like our competitors did. I don't know if they did it on purpose or not, but I congratulate them - it was a fantastic race in Canada.
We have to offer different alternatives to the teams. The four compounds are instrumental to playing the game. I think one of the successful factors of the Pirelli offer was that we maintained, thanks to the advice of some experts, the four compound choice.

Q. But those four compounds will be very different from each other?
FG: They must be, but nevertheless they cannot be. The limit is in theory long lasting compounds should not be so slow to be off-set by a short-lasting compound plus pitstops. I'm afraid it won't always be easy to get the calculations right, but that will be part of the challenge or the excitement.

While he is correct in what he says here, it is totally negated by the requirement to use both compounds.

Pirelli are looking to move to bigger tyres in 2013, with the rest of the big rule change. Possible gradual change, maybe to 15 inch first, or different tyres front or rear. Not entirely bothered either way.

Pirelli has promised Formula 1 fans that it will take an 'aggressive' approach to its tyre choice for next season in a bid to help improve the show.

With the Italian tyre manufacturer having taken on board the lessons from this year's Canadian Grand Prix, which was turned into a great spectacle because of rubber that was difficult to manage, Pirelli says that careful thought will now be made about how best to approach 2011.

I'd say by submitting a better bid than their rivals.

Like Bridgestone?
Anyway, it is a smart thing to do.

I hope Pirelli can bring some really awesome tires and challenges to the teams. I hope the teams get a few days to test the tires before next season.

Uh, Brigestone contract runs out at the end of this year. So all pre-season testing in 2011 will be on Pirelli tires.

Indeed, I didn't realize when the contract with Bridgestone was finished.

The deal breaker for Michelin was their fundamental requirement to have a tyre war. Even their BATNA was having competition in the contract but allowing FiA/FOTA to break the contract in that regard. Knowing the current economic situation of the lower half teams this would never have worked. With FOTA now being the real rule making force Michelin kicked themselves out of the running. Even Todt knew he could not push them through.
